Has anyone even tried getting one at one location, and leaving it at another?

One way rental.

Yes. Last summer we rented in Boston + dropped off at Montreal. Usually a more expensive than round-trip rentals. And they prefer it if you drop off somewhere popular, like an airport.

Planning the summer trip. Would be great to fly in to Utah and fly out of Phoenix.

Holy shit, 3x more expensive, and I was choosing picking up at Denver International, and dropping off at Phoenix Sky Harbor. Not small airports.

The cost makes it worth it to do more driving.
