I really think this all boils down to Trump's insecurities. He thinks that admitting Russia did something wrong is tantamount to saying that he didn't legitimately win the presidency. This has gone off the rails.

To be fair, his policy vs his public comments are almost like they're from two different people. His administration actually has been pretty tough on Russia. Which is why I really think this is just an issue of his being immature.
Also supports my belief that he really has very little to do with the day-to-day policy decisions of his White House.
