Private School shit

Post by GORDON »

Private School was being discussed in the PARCC testing thread but I'll go ahead and break it out.

It's a whole new world. We had our second "parents function" at the school last night with the open bar, rubbing elbows with doctors and lawyers and judges. At one point the wife and I were in a corner speculating.... we were wondering if this crowd skews more liberal or conservative. She was saying that with the money, they would skew conservative... I was suggesting that they'd all claim to be liberal, because a certain kind of person wants to be seen as intelligent and that's how liberals self-identify. The guessing game was made more difficult because the cars in the parking lot were not the types to have political stickers all over them.

Any educated guesses?

I think you'll get a mix like anywhere else.

Although, you'll be far more likely to run into folks who identify as liberals, but live their lives as conservatives.

I went to a private school, and the parents there definitely skewed conservative.

Then, we sent our first daughter to a private preschool that is part of a private school, and it skewed pretty liberal.

It really depends. Certain schools attract certain parents. For yours, I'm guessing conservative-ish

Every parent with whom we mingled last night seemed to have pretty strong, "Public schools really suck" opinions. It was nice to see our opinions weren't too radical... we personally hated how our local public school was slowing everything down to cater to the slowest kids, and doing nothing for the smarter kids when they wanted to move ahead. That seemed to be a common theme. And all of them said that their school districts also stopped everything for the state tests, for months.

So yeah.

Also a lot of them were REALLY snobby, but we were amongst them so we just nodded and smiled and fit in famously.

"My husband the neurosurgeon..."

"My son wants me to buy him the EXPENSIVE plane...."

"My daughter wants yet another horse, oh dear."

Nodding, smiling.

Should have worn your overalls and talked about your troubles with the girl down at the shop being unable to sex your chickens properly. Would have been a hoot.

Went to years of private school. Some benefits, some definite negatives. Is it worth is? I guess that depends how shitty your local public schools are. Theoretically they could be non-shitty somewhere.

Ha.

I'll have you know sir that I do not own any overalls. I own a wetsuit, though. :-D

I do sometimes wear a cowboy hat when I mow, though. Keeps my face and neck from getting sunburned.

They spend a week in math class teaching some simple concept that my kid understands in 5 minutes for the kids who need a week and still don't get it. They were teaching my kid to hate school.

We did the flip side of that one year in our class. The omegas got the lecture/instruction while everyone else could proceed at their own pace. I finished the book that year with time to spare. I think partially just to piss them off and see what else they could come up with on the fly.

I went to a private school for a year, but it was a Catholic school and I was the only publically admitted atheist so my experience was probably not typical.

I just declared myself god the day I walked in the door. I figured if another divine being had a problem with it, he'd do something about it.

Actually we did have a catholic school option much closer and cheaper. I couldn't bring myself to do it, though.

Your school is giving me flashbacks to mine. It was a semi-snooty private school. Not super elite, but fancy for the region. (People literally would drive an hour each way to attend the school, it was not a boarding school, but some people from other states rented apartments to send their children, etc). Honestly, for me, it was a very good experience. I needed a smaller school, and I got to do all sorts of things (I ran track, I swam, was on the basketball team, soccer team, in the school play, etc, etc), whereas in public school I was probably only good enough for swimming and maybe the school play. The small size was weird (45 people in each grade), and everyone knows everything. If your kid is on a scholarship for the school (I have a vague memory of you or Dawn saying that?), assume the other kids will find out. They may or may not give him grief, I know the handful of kids on need-based scholarships at my school did.

Partial scholarship. Full year's tuition is.... $17k? We're paying about half of that, out of pocket. He did pretty well on the scholarship testing. If he weren't white we could have gotten the other half paid for as well. :-D

I have asked if the kids are snots, I have been assured (by the staff) they are not. I've BEEN TOLD this is not like a public school at all. Teachers and the students all tend to treat each other with respect.

No, it turns out the Church gets pissy when you go after their duckets. Most other things are negotiable.

Hah. Tell them they should patent their anti-dick screening process and make billions.
If he weren't white we could have gotten the other half paid for as well.
That's really the fault of his honky ancestors.

No one can ever tell me to check my white privilege ever again. My whiteness is going to cost me tens of thousands of dollars over the.next decade.

Privilege status: checked.
