Last 4 days:
4,5,4,5.

We're egg rich.

And my wife's cheap ass banking coworkers were fine taking free eggs, but now they are balking at $2 per dozen for organic, free-range... to help cover the cost of feed. I really can't express how much that disgusts me.

I'd rather throw the extra eggs in the compost pile to rot than give them any more for free.

Well, your first mistake was anchoring them at free. The next mistake was $2. Should have started at $10, then offered them for $5 since they're them and not those other schlubs.

I hadn't realized my wife was originally giving them away, I told her $1 per dozen, or $.50 if they supplied a carton. But now I have about 50 cartons, and the cost of feed went up when the number of chickens tripled.

But she was giving them away.

Yeah, we were going for $2.50 with the explanation that they aren't $3 until next year when the eggs are more routinely larger. They actually hit that mark in the fall.

I'm surprised you are having trouble selling them. We sell all our excess pretty easy here, and there are lots of people with signs in their yards for selling eggs. And we aren't really trying too hard. Just the wife's coworkers.

Damn Yankees.

6 eggs today! New record.

But the new one was a practice egg with a thin shell, and my finger went through it when I grabbed it. Still counts, though.

Chicken egg production has dropped considerably. They are approaching two years old, and my research says that's when they usually stop laying. One of the reds we can differentiate from the others, so we named her and gave her a reprieve. The others will be food before too long.

I WAS TOLD that when they stop laying, "you can't boil them long enough to get tender.". I bet it would be fine, though. You should try it.

Btw meat birds get butchered at three months, so.

You know, my mother and little sister were just telling a story about eating a chicken at my grandmother's that has stopped laying and they had to throw it away. They said it was like rubber.

I'm planning on getting a rooster and some fresh hens in the spring and incubating the fertile eggs and eating the roosters when they're big enough to tell they're males. So that should work out. I'll let you know about the hen that gets et.

I et a rooster that was about 4 months old. Killed it and ate it all in the same day.

Poor Will couldn't watch it bleed out.

Tell him that Lesa couldn't watch the first two deer I shot bleed out either. Then point out that she's a girl and give him the appropriate amount of ball busting.

My poor boy is sensitive. :)

was about two.below, last.night. all chickens survived. Also, the water warmer and purchased was able to keep up... Water.was.liquid, this morning. Impressive.
