1. Don't know, but it was probably pretty damn high. Even after nearly 9 years of FDR "leading us out of the Depression," things were still pretty depressed---quite possibly thanks to FDR. But I digress.

I'd say buy a router/AP. It ain't THAT hard to maintain. Most of them work out of the box, although their security settings are horrid. No way I'd shell out almost $200/year in rent on one.

And yes, a lot of laptops now come with a built-in wireless NIC nowadays.
