And the comic from TPR's linked article is hilarious and was me before I realized a 1x1 house is the dumbest thing you can build. I totally talked shit to a zombie for a solid minute before it groaned.

I read a book once called "The Road." It was about the extinction of humans on the Earth, and the main character was a guy trying to protect his young son from the other survivors. The other survivors were just regular people at the end of the world, nothing left, starving, and killing/robbing/eating other people so they could live a few days longer. The best image from that story was how they spotted 2 men traveling with a pregnant woman one day, and 3 days later found the remains of a campfire in the direction they traveled with the gnawed bones of an infant in the ashes. I wish I could unread that book. It doesn't sound like a fun thing to simulate in my leisure time.

I couldn't play Star Wars Galaxies because of the atrocities in Ender's Game.

Okay, I bought it.
I see some of the official servers have 200 player caps now, but are labeled "Stress Test". They must be working on expanding the server pops.
I didn't know this was made by the Gary's Mod guy. He does good work.
What server should I look for, Troy?

I finished Phase One of my construction late last night. Three days of work. I think I'm 5 stories up for my living spaces. Plenty of room to grow but I want to do it organically and reactively.
The whole entire first level is fake with tons of empty storage boxes. Will throw some pics up when I get off work.
The server I'm playing on is a "no dick" server. Whatever that means. So far it just seems like people scarred from the ruthless other servers. Everyone is friendly but cautious.
E: The friendly server I found was like : US-TX, Rad City Gaming, Wiped 1/20. Should be a good ping for you and people mostly aren't dicks.

Dogs and fast zombies can be a bitch until you make a pipe shotgun.
You have to sprint away to boulders and do some loop to loop shift over them.

Second game: logged in, whacked a tree, chased down and bludgeoned a pig to death, cooked the pig-chicken (?) and ate it, shot at by some guy and in panic ran off a cliff into the sea and drowned.

Hahaha, excellent.
Don't chop trees for wood. Look for wood piles.
And all animals give "raw chicken breast" as meat. It is a mystery.

Third game (on Troy server): logged in, before world loaded heard zombie and when game fully loaded I was dead by zombie.
I'm enjoying it so far, but it seems a little rougher than I expected.

Explore, die a ton, get to know the game and have fun. I can provide some weapons and food later and I can start stockpiling some crafting recipes for you (and anyone) too. Recipes are the hardest thing to get and learning from them is the big "character progression" in this game.
If you follow the road you'll never be lost. Here is a map that will not help you at all until you play for a little bit.
The map is substantially bigger than that, but that's the "interesting stuff" map.

Fourth game: made a hatchet, gathered lots of wood and stone, finally found a pig when my hunger was at 220, the moment I killed it I heard a roar and found three bears running me down, sprinted away from them before I could harvest the pig and starved to death while running away

Try doing a city run on your next life. Run into an irradiated town and look for salvage boxes. If your rad levels gets above 400 run out. But you won't take damage until you are that nuked(maybe higher). It's a good way to skip a few steps in progression if you get lucky and nab a weapon or something.

Finally I have survived a night. This game was like the last one, except instead of three bears it was one wolf, and I killed it with 10hp left. Bandages, food, shed, night, dawn is coming and maybe this time I'll last a bit longer.
I feel like I ran halfway across the map but never saw the road so I have no idea where I am yet. Not sure if I should keep exploring or just start building where I'm at.

Also, I now have pants, so I won't be kicked from the "no dicks" server for being naked.

I would try to build close to a resource spawning spot or at least so you know where the road is. Your first house isn't a big deal though, it's more a convenient loot dump until you find a new site.
Pretty much the worst thing is getting lost and not knowing where your house is
