Ok, the poll is a goof, but it's a good topic for conversation.

Gordon chooses to live away from an urban area and deals with terrible Internet. At least one person lives in the urban area and has great internet, another lives in an urban area and has terrible Internet (for shame TPR), and I assume most of us are more suburban folks where it's a mix.

My area is interesting because I live in a rural area of Michigan, but only a minute or two from the urban area of Ohio. Thus, I have the best of both worlds and the worst (Michigan roads are bad). I think Gordo should look in this area if he decides to flee his current home.

Anyway, what's the draw of living rural if you get shit services? What are you trying to be away from really?

I don't think it's a choice.

And for the record, Troy's almost certainly more urban than where I live.  I'm straight-up suburban.  (the bottom half of that sentence).  I'm a good 15 minutes from urban (Raleigh or Durham)

I voted "to work the land," but really it's a combination of SOME of those poll options.

Originally moved to this small town because I grew up in this small town and I wanted my kid to go to the same school I did.  Bad decision because having been away for 20 years I forgot this small town kind of sucked, and the school administrators tore down the schools I actually attended to build new ones with federal money, so my kid can't go to my school.  We are putting him in a private school 40 minutes away, into the city, next year, for what that's worth.

Taxes - not really.  I'd actually prefer it if my small town would incorporate, institute a 1% tax, and get some (chill) police.  The local teens know the nearest sheriff deputy is probably 30 minutes away, and they act accordingly.  This one is actually a tossup.  If they aren't chill then they are worse than the local teens.

Minorities.... not really, only in that their neighborhoods are likely to have high crime.  I hate crime and think thieves of all stripes are subhuman scum.  So I'd have stress in that environment.  Europe... the real Europe outside of Ibiza and Spanish beaches when the English are on holiday, already had problems with minorities.  I was encountering belligerent Nigerians in France in 1992.  It's only going to get worse, and there are plenty of other places to go in the world on vacation.  I think Europe is going to explode, literally or figuratively, within 20 years.  I'm placing my official bet.  Nothing to do with brown people, everything to do with ideologies.

Crime - See my previous words... we have troublesome teens and no cops.  But probably still less than in an urban hellhole.

Traffic - Not really a factor in Toledo, as compared to Atlanta or San Francisco or L.A.  Some of the city streets have rush hours, but again, not massive.

Long drives and fewer options.... nature of the beast.

++++

When we moved back to Ohio we could have moved into one of the new HOA neighborhoods with the expensive houses with vaulted ceilings, and then not had any more money to do the vacations and toys and stuff that we liked, so we moved into a big, older home and were able to put 20% down and avoid PMI.  This is why  I have had so many home remodeling projects, but it's also why we've been to Disney 4 times in 8 years, Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, South Dakota, basically 2 major vacations a year, and why I have a house full of computers and game consoles and 5 55+" flat screen TVs in various rooms, and etc etc etc.  Not humblebragging, just splaining.  We've traded urban, even suburban conveniences so our money would go farther and give us, in my opinion, a richer life.

So you know, there isn't any one reason.

++++

In NC we actually lived in a great community that the city had grown around, and it had a big 10 foot wall around all of it, and it was quiet, and we were on a cul de sac, and we were 5 minutes from everything.  I actually miss that house.  When we put it on the market on a whim, it was sold in 2 days.... I had expected 30 days to go by and we'd cancel the listing.  So... yeah, I get the appeal of Leisher's location.  And I also know he has to deal with more crime than I have, if only a little.  My major problem thus far is teenagers being too noisy on the street, and littering in my yard as they use it for a shortcut.  He has problems with stuff like UPS packages getting stolen from his front door.

Folks out here raise chickens and whatnot.

If you ever escape your family and go for a drive, you should do so over here just to get an understanding of the community. It's actually right up your alley.

Close enough to the shit to get the good stuff, but far enough away to miss most of the bad stuff.

And about that package. I forget the story, I'll have to ask my wife, but it eventually showed up, but not until months later. So it wasn't stolen.

In the country to raise chickens and hunt and trap.  Also want to set up for immediate family if it hits the fan.  Closest "city" is about an hour away and about 35-40k people.

Finding I don't miss the Internet that much.  Come to McD's once or twice a week.  Looking at a local cell carrier that can offer Internet.  Might look into that once I get everything done that I need to get done to be ready for whatever.

My wife and I are currently looking at houses and are pretty close to purchasing one in the Michigan area the Leisher is talking about.  I like the area for the same reasons he states, you can get a little bit out of the city but not far enough that its a pain in the ass to get groceries or gas. Even though I'd still call the Bedford area the suburbs because lets be honest, its not really THAT rural.  But it does offer some more land and more space between the houses, unlike the ones here in Toledo where they are pretty much stacked right on top of each other.

The thing that's really got me thinking twice about moving to Michigan is the car insurance.  We got a quote from our agent and its literally twice as much as Ohio!  My wife and I both have good driving records and got really good insurance on the cars because its so cheap here but might have to change our coverage a little bit to get that more in line with Ohio prices.  Our agent told us that Ohio is the cheapest state for car insurance and Michigan is the highest, just another reason for me to say FUCK MICHIGAN!  Stupid "no fault" insurance.

The prices for comparable homes in Michigan are higher than similar houses in relatively nice neighborhoods in Ohio but this is understandable because no one wants to live in Toledo anymore.  Now my wife is all about moving out into the country and getting away from the city and I'm kind of on the fence with that.  Sure you can get some really good bang for your buck on an older house and some land, but there are many things that come into factor as stated earlier in this thread.

Just kicking these ideas around in our head right now and who knows where i'll end up.  Could be in Leisher's area or Gordon's area, I really don't know right now.

The car insurance was a shock to us too, but honestly, it's not that much more. I think we're paying $100 and change more every six months.

I also want to say license renewals and stuff are cheaper in Michigan than in Ohio. Not 100% on that.

Plus, taxes are MUCH lower than Ohio, particularly certain suburbs where all the honkeys live.

If you guys have questions about the area have your wife call mine. She'd be happy to give her the rundown.

If it were only $200 a year then I wouldn't have any problems with that, but our agent said it was like $2000 more a year! this is unbelievable.  We're going to look into other insurance agencies to see if there is any difference but I doubt that it would be that much better.  My wife drives a 10 year old minivan and I drive a 4 year old 4 door sedan, similar to yours Leisher, not like I'm driving a brand new Ferrari over here.

Also, I always thought and heard the taxes were much better than Ohio, and for the most part they are.  But the house we're looking at has a $2300 tag, maybe its because the land area is about 2-3 times the average Ohio suburban house, I guess I expected cheaper though.

Also, this house happens to have a creek running along beside it so its technically in a flood zone, and of course that means flood insurance.  Depending on what the agent comes back with on that could make or break the deal, they said it could be anywhere from $500-$3000 a year!  Fuck all this insurance bullshit!

$2000 more a year? What?
I don't pay anywhere close to $2000 for a full year, let alone $2000 on top of what I was paying in Ohio.

Time for a new insurance agent!

My wife drives a 10 year old minivan and you know what I drive.

lmao - how did I miss this shirt.

True - from a guy who grew up in Cary for 18 years. Hard to beat those safe, formative years. I couldn't imagine living their now as a 20 and 30 something though.

I love Cary for most things.  Close to the library, parks, gym, work, and great schools.  And, since I've got kids, that's most of my life in a nutshell.

Date night provides challenges though, assuming you want more than dinner + movie.  But Durham and Raleigh aren't too far.
