I finished this at 98% completion the other day.
This is the crazy cousin of GTA. The gameplay is basically the same, but it's different in that the characters are the same as the other games in the series and any chance of reality is right out of the window.
So in Saints Row you start off as a complete nobody fighting your way through a street war. It was gritty and more of a GTA knock off. They realized that wasn't working so either in 2 or 3 they stuck their tongue in their cheek and had more fun with the series. I don't remember much about 2, but 3 was a riot as you fought other gangs for control of Steelport. I forgot the end of that game, but...
You start off SR4 as the President of the United States. (Awesome.) Shit goes south fast though as aliens invade and capture you and your whole cabinet (other Saints).
You get stuck into a Matrix of Steelport and have to figure out how to turn the tables on the aliens. Yes, I said Matrix. Yes, you are Neo.
I clearly won't tell you the ending, but if they made a #5, I'd look forward to playing it.
The humor of this game is well done. Yeah, some things are over the top, but they've scaled back on the 6' dildo weapons. It's still rude and crude, but not for the sake of being rude and crude anymore. Now it fits. There's even a legit touching moment in the later part of the game between two characters that have gone through all 4 together that's quite funny. (And a moment guys everywhere have done...hint: it involves Busta Rhymes.)
Love the way they deal with the standard collecting in this genre as well. You're not looking for needles in a haystack, and eventually, it'll all show up on your map.
If you enjoy the genre and have never given Saints Row a chance, do so, but not sure I can say start at 4. Not because it's bad, but because it feels like a farewell to all the characters. Meaning there's a lot of in jokes and spotlight moments for them all, and if you haven't played the first three, you probably won't care.
