Article

I used to pirate games.  I've pirated a lot of games.  I started almost 30 years ago.  I ran a section on my BBS for pirates, exchanging games and other warez.

I can't tell you exactly when it happened, but I stopped pirating games.  I went to my server to see what games I may still have on my share from pirating days, but there's nothing there.    Maybe it was Civ V almost 6 years ago?

But I own Civ V, too.  And I think the way I own Civ V is why I stopped pirating.  I bought it on Steam.  I've bought a lot of games on Steam.  They're cheap.  They're convenient.  Cloud saves.  No dealing with patching a game, disconnecting my internet, etc, etc in order to steal a game.  Steam makes it too easy and too cheap to bother.

Indeed.  I had whole shoeboxes of pirated games for my C64 back in the day.  I've only pirated two games in the past decade, both because they were exclusively on Origin which I was unwilling in install.

It's because most piracy is about convenience at least as much as price.  Make your product more convenient than pirating it and reasonably priced and there's no reason for piracy.  A lesson that perhaps the movie & TV industries will one day learn.

With these stream-all-you-want services, I don't even pirate music any more either.  I do pay for Google Music ($8/month), and that's got pretty much anything I ever need.

Online distro and way better/more restrictive verification are slowly chipping away at it.  Not to mention the huge proliferation of decent quality but far cheaper games.
