Are employees of Uber. QUOTE The seemingly minor distinction won the driver, Barbara Berwick $4,152. But it could have a significantly bigger impact on the $40 billion start-up, which currently saddles its drivers with major costs, including the vehicle itself, maintenance, insurance and gas, by labeling its drivers independent contractors rather than employees.

That's pretty interesting since I am sure one signs a contract with Uber at the beginning stating that they understand they are contractors.
Unless Uber just has a stupid-ass legal team.

QUOTE In reality, Uber maintains a good deal of control over its drivers, including the types of cars they can drive, their car's age, and, to some extent, how often they work, the commission noted.
Uber also controls the fares drivers can charge. Past decisions to lower fares to compete with Lyft and other ride-hailing companies has led to protests in cities like New York City. Yeah, but how independent are they? Cali seems to be saying that the drivers should be able to set fares and rules for their vehicles.

Yeah, it seems likely that this just means Uber will stop doing business in Cali.
There's still 49 other states where they can make money.
