Fucking yes.

Amen.  Fucking pain in the ass to dial in temps with the laser thermo I got.

Interesting, but looks like just another thing to clean.

I cook a lot so I know where to set all my knobs for whatever general temp I need, and if I need specific temps, like when I am brewing, I just throw a thermometer in it and babysit.

edit - gas stove, btw.  I think they are superior.

Real cooks don't need to know the exact temp.  You just know your food.

They do have a point though with knobs being different from brand to brand, and there really is no standard for what "3" means on a 1-6 knob.

But yeah, gotta know your food, too.

After setting off my smoke detector once, I decided I do need to know the temp, at least within a few degrees, especially when I'm under 212F.

Sometimes I will open my oven and, even in the absence of smoke, it will set off the fire alarm 20 feet away in the next room.

1.  It's a good thing I don't live in a place which requires sprinkler systems.

2.  I really should replace that detector.

Go camping with a master of the dutch oven and the camp fire.  Knowing the temp is over rated :-)

Screw camping.  Mankind didn't spend thousands of years developing walls, ceilings, and floors so I could chuck it all away.

True of vegetables and simple meat dishes.  Not so much when it comes to more advanced cooking, like candy making.  When working with melted sugar as little as 1/10th of a degree can make a huge difference.
