I don't think the kid was really trying to pass himself off as someone from the military for personal benefit.  I don't think the sales dudes at Foot Locker are actually refs, either.  That being said, the store folk handled it like they were douches.

Bennett, who comes from a military family, knows that United States Code makes it illegal “to falsely represent oneself as having received any U.S. military decoration or medal.”  The law making that illegal is known as the Stolen Valor Act.

I don't see any evidence of this happening, but the article doesn't really touch on why the guy was wearing the uniform.  And that law is not the same as wearing a uniform.  I default to: Free country, people can wear the uniform if they want.

I don't think the manager should be fired, but he should get his eyes opened.

Exactly.

The manager shouldn't be fired for what his employee was wearing, but because he handled it terribly, and it's now hurting the company.

Instead of being stubborn and calling security, he/she should have remained calm, apologetic, and then instructed the employee to throw something on, like a fleece.

The situation would have been diffused, and the employee could have taken the fleece off after the customer was gone.
