Interesting little story about AB InBev, who is buying up little microbrews around the world and destroying them.
I also think this suggests the reason for the rise of home brewing.... everything else is turning to shit owned by AB InBev.

It's more profitable to make lower quality beer in larger batches with crappier ingredients. It also makes the beer taste like ass. I'm willing to bet none of the execs at InBev drink their own product. I don't drink their swill. I've gone to Blue Moon and Sam.

And, there has been a massive uptick in the number of people home brewing.
No correlation.

QUOTE And, there has been a massive uptick in the number of people home brewing. Â
No correlation. Part of that was the cost of doing it finally got to be practical coupled with knowledge transmission. Â You could do it 50 years ago, but they didn't have places you could go brew your beer that'd take care of 90% of the work for you. Â You didn't have joints you could buy brewing supplies from online. Â You didn't have the huge explosion of recipes made available to the masses via internet. Â I'm going with all of that before I go with "InBev fucked up."
1) The article starts with a dude bitching about Beck's. Â That particular beer had a signature style and flavour that got killed because of cost-cutting measures. Â I'm betting InBev lost cash there and in similar beers.
2) The margin for Beck's, Goose Island, and all the other "craft" beers Anheuser-Busch produces pales in comparison to the Budweiser products.
3) Budweiser tasted like Clydesdale piss before the buyout. Â It tastes like a different variety of piss now. Â I've never known anyone who said, "I buy Bud for the taste," that I could take seriously. Â However, the article points out the volume of Bud-related shipments has gone down, so cash is lost there.
4) The execs look like they're drastically slashing operating costs. Â Money made back.
5) They look like they're acquiring more brewing companies. Â You can afford to make shitty products if your competition is tiny.

This is partly the case. I'll certainly say my shitty brew job is equal to some of the best I've gotten from a store or bar.
However, most of the volume beers (Bud, Coors, Michelob, Miller, PBR, etc.) in the U.S. are pilsner in style. The lighter the beer, the greater the chance a fuck up is noticeable during brewing. I've noticed most of the brewers I know don't do pilsners. It's IPA, bock, stout, red, amber, anything but straight pilsner. Making a good one under ideal circumstances is hard. Making it in titantic batches like InBev does at AB means you are sacrificing taste for quantity.

I am looking forward to starting pilsners after I get a big cooler from Santa. :-D From my reading they don't seem overly hard, it is all about temperature control.

QUOTE I am looking forward to starting pilsners after I get a big cooler from Santa. :-D Â From my reading they don't seem overly hard, it is all about temperature control. The darker the beer, the more things you can add to cover up a fuck up. Controlling the brewing environment is essential. These dudes make the best commercially produced pilsner I've ever had under the name Czechvar in the U.S. and Canada. So, at least up to that size, you can ensure quality. I've taken a look at the inside of the AB Brewery many a time. The tanks there are gargantuan. Keeping tabs on a smaller quantity of brew makes life easier.
