A ghost did!
I remember a movie about this same subject that was "based on a true story". The plot was that the woman was getting beaten by her dead abusive husband. Researchers setup an exact replica of her house in a sound stage, and filmed her getting beaten by something that wasn't there. Anyone else ever see this movie?
