is on its death bed.

This has been expected for some time, but it's the first time the company had to do something publicly. They've always denied being in trouble before.

This isn't so much the fault of digital distribution so much as it's Blockbuster's own fault.

Did you know that they had the ideas and opportunities to beat both Netflix and Red Box to the market in their respective movie distribution methods but passed each time?

Blockbuster will be an example used in future business class of a company that failed because they were unwilling to change their business model.

We are all film buffs, and the older among us were hitting video stores as soon as we got our licenses, bringing home VHS movies 3 at a time for a Friday night.

Blockbuster killed all of the small rental places in town before the DVD format was even big.  And I remember the last time I rented from Blockbuster.  It was 2004, pre-when-I-had-Netflix, and there was a BB a half mile from my house, and it was sort of a tradition so we went there one more time.  Rented a couple DVDs.  In the past I was getting scratched up DVDs from there that were unplayable, and I wanted to check them in the cases before I left the store... I was told no.  I was told they inspect the disks before they go in the case, and they were good to go.  The way it was set up is that you paid in the store, then stepped around the counter to the OUT door and they handed you your bag right there on your way out.

Got home, had food delivered, disk in the player, and it was scratched all to hell and wouldn't play.  I took the disks back, found the same guy, and returned the disks with my rental card.

About 6 months later was when they announced that big $250MM loss.

I am glad Netflix became cross platform and easily usable on the living room entertainment center.  Fuck BB.
