They meet in their private homes, and are being told to get a permit.

Now, I'm as atheistic as the next guy, but this seems wrong.

I like my roads unobstructed, so I'm not going to judge one way or the other.  Frankly, I don't like people parking in streets.

There seems to be little issue w\ what they're studying/teaching/believing & more problems w\ the amount of folk they draw.  I live right next to the city's community center.  Every time they hold any kind of special event, parking on my block (& other in a 2-3 block radius) becomes shitty.

I hear you.  They were talking about 40 people attending these things.  I've had birthday parties for my kid with that many people over to the house.  Should I have to get a permit?

Only if you can't fit every car on your lawn.

I remember a number of years ago a discussion about immigrant families moving 25 relatives into their house, and the neighbors complaining.  Then y'all were clamoring that you wanted freedom to do those kinds of things.  Parking is now more important than freedom?  Nobody (YOU PEOPLE) was complaining about the parking situation, then.

No, they can still all have the freedom to live in their one house, but I still have the freedom to drive on my road without cars all up and downit.

Why doesn't the city offer them some space somewhere? You know they have vacant buildings. (I don't mean an empty or abandoned building, but more like big conference rooms at government owned buildings.)

Or how about these Christians simply rent a hall? I guarantee they could get discounted rates if they scheduled weekly meetings at some hall.

While I agree 100% with Gordo in that these folks should have the right to meet, I'm with Catt and Malcolm when it comes to the parking situation.

At some point, their neighbors' rights have to be taken into account. One birthday party filling the street with cars is no big deal, even if it's an annual event. However, when it becomes every Friday, that's bullshit. What happens if their neighbors want to throw a party? They can't because there's no space. How about if their neighbors are trying to sell their house and have a showing on a Friday night? The potential buyers would be scared away by the traffic and parking lot of a street.

If their meetings didn't involve a parking lot worth of cars disrupting their neighbors' lives, then I'd say the city should go fuck itself.

Public road.  I don't think you have that freedom.

Gives them to the right to drive on it. Not the right to park on it.

This happened in a townhouse complex near Chapel Hill that I lived during college. People would come and park in the roads connecting the unit parking lots, and leave their cars there all day and night, so they could walk to the bus stop.

City meeting after some complaints of constant parking and people started getting towed. I think they did put a sign up after a few rounds of towing, though.

I'm mainly just arguing the other side, I generally agree with "I hate shitty neighbors" mentality... y'all know that.

The only thing that bugs me is, well, take the birthday-party situation, for instance.  I can have 50 people over for a party, and have peeps park along side of the road in front of my neighbors' houses.  Or, I can do it legally, jump through administrative hoops at the county courthouse, pay money, and then have a birthday party at my house with 50 people who park their cars in front of my neighbors' houses.

1.  Fuck the government.
2.  If my neighbors actually saw any of that money, I'd complain less.
3.  Maybe the bible group should start a "parking pool" and slip all the neighbors $20 each for the inconvenience on Friday nights.  I think that is What Jesus Would Do.

Can you imagine the uproar if the city was denying the right of a KORAN study group to gather?

If you start having parties like that on a regular weekly basis, yeah, you might.

Exactly.

One one time or once in a long while thing is a different issue, but this is weekly.

I blame the government.  If they hadn't extorted tax dollars from the citizenry to build the roads then those citizens wouldn't feel they have an obligatory right to use them.

The simple solution would be to give each homeowner the right to tow (at the owner's expense) any cars parked on the side of the curb right in front of their property.  If the neighbors are amiable there are no problems.  If the neighbors are pissing each other off then they better be sure to park only in front of their own property or else be towed.  Either way, problem solved.

Fuckin Christians. Us Romans use to feed them to the lions. I would think the good thing is that they are suppose to be Christians. And if they were clogging up your road every week and you were having a party you could go over and talk to them about maybe not doing it one week or maybe going somewhere else one day. If they give you shit you can just respond they aren't being very Christian about it.
As far as everything else. We should go pray somewhere else. Don't pray in school you offend me, don't pray at football games, don't pray in public. You are starting to tramp on my rights. Go bugger off.

I'm going to have to fall on the side of "If the city has a problem with people parking on the street, put up 'no parking' signs".

Otherwise this seems arbitrary.

I'd bet that there's paperwork to put up a sign that they just don't want to do.
