I rarely log into my gmail account as it's not my primary. Today I needed to get into it for some registration information with a tech site and found myself locked out. I used the gmail steps to reinstate my password and thought something was odd when I saw the security question. It was "What is your favorite color?". I never use that one. I use my own if the option is available.

Still, I entered in what my favorite color is and it let me change my password. I got in and knew I had been hacked as all of my emails were gone and were replaced by emails for a guy named Ray Leisher. He also has an email account at rayleisher@yahoo.com. He lives in Gauteng, South Africa and I have his street address. I also have emails that revolve around his business dealings, including invoices and such.

I promptly changed my password and the security question on the account.

Go check all the security settings on your accounts, particularly the ones setup years ago.

I'm thinking I did leave the security question set to something easily guessable and Google's "instant password recovery" option made it easy to break into my account.

I'm glad I didn't use that account for anything but Facebook.

I just recently started using SuperGenPass to get better password security.  I only had three passwords, and two of them were short dictionary words, so it was time for a change.  Just in case.

I've emailed his other account, but haven't received a response. I also reported all his shit to Google, not that they'll give a fuck.

You know I had something similar happen with my yahoo account. I just got a new phone with Sprint so I hooked it up to access my email account (the first time I ever did something like that). The next day my account was hacked and used to send ad emails to everybody in my address book. The also set my auto reply to respond with more ads. It was some company in China.
I had a really hard Yahoo password (number, special character, etc.) that the only time I entered it other then to log in was setting up the Sprint forward. I did some research and seems it is not as unusual as it sounds.
