As a general rule, I don't buy much in the way of jewelry or flowers, but I'm thinking of buying some jewelry this year.

Is there a good way to get jewelry that doesn't involve getting completely ripped off?

Stealing it.

I'd just say this, stay away from the big box stores like Jared and go to a small local mom and pop shop.

When I got married my wife and I went around looking for wedding bands.  Places like Jared, Kay jewlers and even JC Penny's were way over priced compared to the local shop we ended up buying from.

I just needed a plain white gold band and so did she, but hers needed to be custom molded to fit her engagement ring and it was very reasonably priced.  The ones I was looking at at Jared's was really thin and felt cheap compared to what i ended up getting.

I don't know much else about jewelry shopping but i know from that experience that going to the small shop was well worth it.  The only problem one might find is the big box stores are more likely to finance you and the small shops might not even offer that, but I'm not really sure.

From what I gather, you should avoid buying jewelry from Wal-Mart.

Go to your local pawn shop and haggle like a mofo.

Spent brass shell casings can be dremeled into very nice jewelry, or used to construct a golem-like shell to protect your loved one.

This joint makes shells into bottle openers and tap handles.  Shot the shit with one of their reps a month or so ago at the local liquor store.  I believe the tap handles are all battlefield used and the openers are surplus.
