highway safety?

Drove to Niagara Falls this weekend, through Ohio, PA, NY, and about 20 miles of Canada.

On Friday, in Ohio, we saw 27 state troopers working in groups pulling people over... one cop in the middle of the road with a gun, and 4 or 5 cars downstream pulling people over.  Several groups of them along I-90.

We saw zero police on I-90 in PA and NY, and none in Canada, ever.

So I'm wondered how the numbers compare.... do high numbers of speeding tickets actually translate into safer roads, once adjusted for population?

My dad was pulled over some years ago by a state trooper that knew him.  Was for something piddly.  Don't even remember now what it was.  Once he realized he knew my dad he asked if he was in a hurry to get somewhere.  My dad said no, so the trooper just sat and chatted with him at the side of the road so the other traffic would see the lights and slow down.  Was a high speed/high accident area.  Thought that was someone looking more to do public service than raise revenue.

What you saw this weekend was courtesy of the feds. They apparently handed down some grant money to Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and other states to run radar over Memorial Day weekend. I don't believe PA and NY were included. It sounded like Midwestern states only.

So in this instance the locals weren't fishing for cash like you see at the Florida border.

However, do the stats show that slowing down folks equals safer roads? No idea.

Here's what happens when speed limits are more or less removed.
