Last winter my (not attached) garage got infested with mice, I think because there were a couple bags of bird seed in there.
My indoor cat, Korben Dallas, must have sensed it, because one day he darted out of the house, made a beeline to the open garage door, and it was about 6 weeks before we could pry him out of there. Â Never seen anything like that from that cat, who had lived indoors all his life.
Anyway, at this point, my wife is all paranoid about letting him back in the house... "HE'LL BRING IN FLEAS AND TICKS AND BUBONIC PLAGUE." Â No argument is possible, so he becomes an outdoor cat.
At first I just moved his "hopper" dry cat food feeder out, which in the house would feed him for about 10 days. Â Then the local stray cats, racoons, and skunks found the free food source, and I realized that I was filling it up every day. Â That isn't going to fly. Â I live in a small town, I was surprised at all the wildlife that showed up. Â One night my cat got skunked.
SO I started putting just a dish of food out in the morning, just enough that it would be empty by evening when the foragers came out. Â Pain in the ass now having a brand-new daily chore. Â That took care of most of the stray/wildlife problem.
Except for one cat. Â He stayed. Â I just call him "Stupid Cat." Â I had planned on Korben Dallas being my last pet for a while... I am tired of cat hair everywhere, and cleaning shit out of a litter box. Â But now there's this guy who is trying to adopt me.
I am guessing he is 2-3 years old, he acts like a full grown, but young cat. Â He is at the door every morning with my regular cat begging for food. Â He is around most of the day.
And he is a mouser. Â I have found 3 dead mice outside the door in the last month. Â And a birder. Â I saw him take one down a few weeks ago. Â And as of this morning, a rabbiter. Â There is a god damned dead rabbit next to the door of my truck.
In a couple weeks I expect to find a dead horse in the driveway with tiny little bite marks all over it.

Bah, my cats are indoor/outdoor (I have a cat door in the window on my patio) and they don't have ticks or fleas or plague. Those little drops you put on their necks once a month do wonders.
Best part is no more litter box. I still have one for them just in case, but they only ever use it when it's raining too much for them to want to go outside. I've trained them well, I have.
