Voter turnout is already, what ... 50% in most places (2008 average was 56.8% apparently)?  Approximately half the potential voters aren't showing up because they just don't give a fuck.  Even being conservative, that's at least 4 of every 10 voters saying what amounts to, "Fuck you, this game is bullshit and I'm not playing."  The modern American political system says you've got exactly two choices, no more and no less.  And don't you even fucking think about NOT making a choice or expressing your dissatisfaction about said bullshit outside a polling place on election day, that's fucking communism right there, or so some judge in Nevada just ruled.  Trying to outbid an incumbent donkey or pachyderm for elected office is about as good a proposition as getting into an ass-kicking contest with a porcupine.

The non-voting people aren't quite pissed enough to do anything drastic.  When they start torching voting booths, maybe I'll believe they give a fuck.  When they stop electing fucktards to ten consecutive terms in the House of Representatives, maybe I'll give a fuck.

I'm just saying that when I hear about people not voting "Making a statement" doesn't enter my mind.  "Lazy" does.  No way the majority of nonvoters are making a statement about the candidate selection.

The chances of my finding someone worthwhile to vote for (read as "I don't violently disagree with and has a realistic shot at winning") are less than my chances of suffering a fatal accident on my way to the polling place.  The chances of my vote affecting a change I'll notice next term are even less.  How this country decided that two major political parties was enough, I'll never know.

Something tells me I'd be better off taking the time it would've taken me to vote, go to work, then donate that hour of wages to his next campaign.  I don't think it's the votes holding third parties back so much as the cash.

EDIT: Being animated and memorable helps.  The last "independent" that actually made a dent I'd call significant was Perot back two fucking decades ago.  Fuck Nader in 2000, he wasn't anywhere near as big.  Hell, Perot sounded batshit insane, too.  Maybe that's why he got as much attention as he did.
