I'll preface this by saying I fully support gay marriage. I don't think it's any of my business if Cakedaddy and Gordon want to get married.

However, throughout the gay marriage debates over the past few years, I continually think, "What will be next?"

Let's not pretend that once gay people have the right to marry (and they should), that it's going to stop there because it's not.

Someone else's plight will then take center stage, but who? Who else will step up and demand to be recognized for their love?

NAMBLA has been allowed to march in gay rights parades before. Don't believe those assholes are above wanting "equality".

I've read about men and women around the world marrying inanimate objects.

Ditto for animals.

Perhaps an alien race will make first contact, and it'll be a race to see who gets to fuck one first?

My money is on a revisiting of multiple person relationships. Whether it's Mormons, swingers, some chick and the two bi guys she bangs, or whatever, I think this is the next area where folks are going to want recognition for their relationships.

So what's the argument going to be for stopping them?

It's easy to tell the NAMBLA folks to go fuck themselves and die.

It's easy to ignore the animal molesters, however legally folks leave money to their pets...

You can try to ignore the folks who screw inanimate objects, but they're not hurting anyone. So really...what's the harm?

However, when it comes to multiple consenting adults in an open relationship, if they all want to get married...whay will the argument be against it?

Obviously you'll have the bible thumpers, and the morality argument, but what else?

Slippery Slope

Any rate, I figure it's polygamists.  Consenting adults and all that.

Polygamy. Maybe not here right, away, but in some European countries that are over-run by Islam. Probably Scandinavia or Britain. They're already at the point where it's practically illegal to look sideways at a member of a designated victim group.

Eh, it's an easier slope to slip down than others.

I could absolutely see this happening for two reasons:
1. Folks in this country went on a rampage within the last decade (or so) trying to really get rid of polygamy. Not sure why it became a hot button issue, but gay marriage would give polygamy supporters a boost. (Romney is a Mormon! hehe)
2. "Alternate partnerships" are on a rise, and the numbers aren't just about gay folks.

I think it's pretty easy to draw a very clear and simple line: consenting adults get to do what they want with each other, and everyone else can just butt the fuck out.

Ideally lets have the government not give a shit either, but if we have to have laws about it then make the laws that simple: consenting adults get to do what they want with each other, and everyone else can just butt eh fuck out.

Please note that "consenting" can not include animals or plants or aliens (at least not until they learn to speak English and can signify their consent), and "adult" can not include NAMBLA.

Where's the slippery slope in that?

Yeah, what TPR said, basically.  It's a LONG way down the slope from gay marriage to polygamy to (way way way way down) bestiality/NAMBLA.

I really have no problem with polygamy.  Other than dealing with >1 wife.

Then we can just sell our daughters into marriage to the billionaire who keeps his 700 wives in his dungeon pleasure palace.

Or something.

China is going to be an interesting study in whether or not anything bad happens in a large population when there aren't enough women to go around.

I don't agree with that at all. Polygamy has a long, LONG history, is still practiced today in many places, and you could even make the case that it is part of our cultural heritage, since it was quite popular in the Old Testament. And besides the Mormons, there are Muslim immigrants who might very easily pressure Uncle Sam into legalizing. Especially if they play the victim card.

Gay marriage...well, Wikipedia has some stuff, but it's fairly thin gruel if you ask me.

As long as it's completely consensual all around and she's an adult operating freely, sure.

I change my sentence midstream, but didn't fix the 1/2 half of it, too tired.

Gay marriage (top of slope)

Polygamy (furhter down)

beastiality/marrying things (bottom of the hill)

is what i was trying to say.

Marrying "objects" should just be grounds for someone to get committed to a mental institution.

That being said, I LOVE LAMP.

Actually, if someone wants to marry an object I guess that's okay.  As long as they own it, and don't expect it to get any special legal rights not normally given to objects or anything.

Silly, IMO, but what the hell, no harm done and it makes 'em happy I guess.

California jumps onto the "slippery slope"?

Makes sense to me.  Throughout history extended families meant that kids basically had a bunch of parents caring for them.  The whole two-parent household thing is a relatively new invention.

As is (I assume) the notion that the State is responsible for assigning children to a grown-up.

True, the idea of the State trying to "protect" children is also very new.  Throughout most of history governments could not have cared less about the welfare of children.

Didn't get to read a whole lot of this post but if I choose to follow the faith I already am allowed to have more than one wife. As long as I can prove I am able to take care of them. Think of the work Harem.
As for gay marring. If you call it marriage I am against it. Call it what ever you want but it isn't a marriage. I am married and last time I looked I had a penis and she had a vagina. So no it isn't the same. Call it whatever you wish. Civil union, life partnership whatever. Then it fine.
