I saw this on Fark, and it got me wondering.
Used to be peeps wore ties because that was just what a man did. Be it work, the Elk Lodge, or just downtown to the police station to answer a few questions, one always put on a suit and tie, first.
Personally, I only wear one if the workplace requires it, or a funeral. I believe it is possible to be clean, neat, and presentable without a tie.
Anyone else?

As long as there are women, there will be ties.

Just like how as long as there are women, a man must always wear a hat in mixed company? Â Or how no man would be caught dead without his codpiece?

This is a tough one. I voted for "die out," but I'm not sure it will be when the boomers are gone. I have long protested the coat+tie+pants model (+optional vest) as one that made sense for Northern Europe during the Little Ice Age, but was absurd for the modern USA, especially in the South.

Seersucker! Isn't that the South's answer?
I said ties will continue. I really have no idea what the history of neckties is, but they seem to still be used by a lot of people. And it may ebb, but that just means it'll be retro-hip at some point in the future.

Considering the the "cravat" dates back at least to Louis XIV, they may be here a while yet.

I think they'll go the way of hats. Guys wore dress hats in the 50's, but they died out.
Ties will do the same, but won't die off as much as mens' hats have.
I guess they'll go the way of women's dresses, where they are only worn on special occasions, and no as standard business attire.
