Let's make a thread for just NCAA stuff. It can be a year round thing. We'll leave the NFL stuff in its own thread.

Anyway, here's the first story:
< Alabama players are scumbags. >

Let's see if they get kicked off the team or if winning is more important.

Posted by Leisher on Feb. 13 2013,08:46
< Indefinite suspensions. > Good for Bama, but they should be facing loss of scholarships and ejection from the team.

In other news,
< the Big Ten is dropping all FCS opponents. >

Nice move, although it sucks knowing #5 Michigan won't get beat by Appalachian State again.

I think this makes them the only conference with such a rule?

Posted by TheCatt on Feb. 13 2013,10:19
Of course they were suspended, they were all backup players.  Now Saban might be able to get those scholarships back.

I've got to think jab. No way does this photo qualify for a V-Day ad, and it just happens to be against Penn State?

If our politicians don’t step in here, this Rice fiasco will be pointed to as an aberration rather than a symptom of a far bigger problem.

< Rutgers reacts to my post, fires coach >

QUOTE
Under pressure from incensed state officials to take stronger action, Athletic Director Tim Pernetti said Wednesday that he had made a mistake in favoring suspension.
"I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice," Pernetti said in a written statement. "Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community."
Gov. Chris Christie, who a spokesman had said was "deeply disturbed" by the video, said Wednesday he supports Rice's firing.
"This was a regrettable episode for the university, but I completely support the decision to remove Coach Rice. It was the right and necessary action to take in light of the conduct displayed on the videotape," he said.
Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi said he had agreed last year with an outside investigator's recommendation that Rice be suspended, fined and sent to anger management classes

On the one hand, I think people generally deserve a 2nd chance.  On the other hand, the dude went too far.

The guy's a fucking bully, and I guarantee you his violent behavior doesn't only occur at practice.

Posted by Malcolm on Apr. 03 2013,08:36

But Frank Mitchell, who played at Rutgers under Rice, told CNN what's in the video wasn't the norm at practices.

"From time to time, there's some instances of throwing balls or physically making contact with players, but it only occurred from time to time, it wasn't an everyday type thing," he told CNN. "Obviously, the video shows it happened, but they were isolated incidents. They weren't back to back."

I don't think "isolated" means what you think it means.

One year I got 10 pops every Friday - using the rubber sole of a size 20 shoe as a paddle - for failing to meet the coach's athletic standards.  The other coaches I've had just shoved kids around and sometimes punched a little while screaming at them.  Nothing that would leave a mark, that would be unprofessional.

As you know, my first instincts when I saw the videotape of Coach Rice’s behavior was to fire him immediately. However, Rutgers decided to follow a process involving university lawyers, human resources professionals, and outside counsel. Following review of the independent investigative report, the consensus was that university policy would not justify dismissal. I have admitted my role in, and regret for, that decision, and wish that I had the opportunity to go back and override it for the sake of everyone involved.

Why don't they just make schools designed specifically to prep folks for careers in pro sports leagues?  It'd remove the academic institution from suffering the idiocies of sport and vice-versa.  And we can stop pretending like anyone gives a fuck what a top NCAA athlete's GPA is.

I don't know how we missed talking about this, but they paid a marketing team to come up with:
College Football Playoff

Wow.

Posted by Leisher on May 06 2013,10:32
< Is the NCAA doomed? >

If O'Bannon's case wins, I think it does more to destroy college athletics than help athletes. In fact, I think it creates an environment where a lot of kids who would have gone to college don't ever get a chance.

In college sports, football pays the bills with basketball a close second. Very few of the other sports make enough money to pay the cost of having a team. If you remove a sizable chunk of that football money to pay athletes, other sports must be cut.

So long all you other kids who got scholarships for archery, tennis, soccer, track and field, etc. Oh, and say goodbye to the U.S.'s dominance in those sports at the Olympics and other such competitions.

In college football, there's something like 70 kids or so on game day rosters. Does having to pay them all mean reduced rosters to more closely match NFL rosters? Do junior colleges then pick up the slack and basically become the no pay or way underpaid farm system for the "farm system"?

And what kind of money are we really talking about? I'm sure some of the dreamers involved are thinking NFL money, but I'm thinking it'll be more along the lines of a couple of hundred bucks for each player based on their fame. Most players aren't going to get anything. A few, like Archie Griffin, will get more because they had more fame, have been featured in more games, etc. Or since it's a class action suit, they probably just split it into even sums with the lawyers taking the biggest chunk. (That's how these suits work, right?)

As for the future, can't the NCAA combat this movement, and the potential of bidding wars for talent (in which case the vast majority of players would get fucked) by simply instituting a salary cap? The best part, for the schools, is that they'll be able to include the cost of a 4 year degree as part of that salary. Not to mention food, travel expenses, equipment costs, etc.

And since we're now paying players, don't more recruits get cut for financial reasons? Now you've got guys who attended school for a year, didn't pan out, got cut, and what are they going to do with their life? I guess that's the tax payer's problem...

And if anyone brings up the "players can sign a contract guaranteeing them 4 years of school", why then can't the school put a provision in stating the player can't leave early? The players will argue it's their right, but honestly, once they become paid pros, they lose that right to leave their amateur status behind. They already did that when they enrolled into the college that's paying them.

Look, I despise the NCAA. I fucking hate it with the red hot intensity of a thousand suns. However, I don't think the people suing are doing so for the best interest of student-athletes like they claim. I think it's a move based on pure greed or need.

I don't see scientists suing schools over breakthroughs made while attending classes (although, I wouldn't be surprised...).

The world already looks the other way as players get paid LEGALLY. Amateurs aren't supposed to be making money from their gifts, yet college athletes get free rides, free room and board, free medical care, expensive gift bags at bowl games, etc. They're also getting free training in their sport of choice from great coaches. Tim Tebow made a lot of money in the NFL thanks to Urban Meyer. Should Florida send Tebow an invoice for the training?

Are these student athletes being exploited? Yes and no. Are there some who will be making multi-million dollar contracts as pros? Yes, but that's a very, very, very small percentage. The rest will never go pro, and they're getting great value in their free education, and experiences of a lifetime.

Can't the NCAA also simply stop using players' likenesses? So next year's EA cover has a painting of a made up player wearing the uniform of the previous year's champ, and the game is filled with made up players? (Each game would also feature the ability to customize rosters and player names...hint hint nudge nudge wink wink.)

And if we do go to a wild wild west where there's no salary cap, and the colleges can all bid on players, does the ivy league instantly become the AL East where championships are bought through funds from their uber rich and powerful graduates? Does OSU remain a factor thanks to the biggest fan base on the planet? Does Oregon change their logo to the Nike Swoosh? Does Alabama maintain power by becoming the Alabama Rolling Tide presented by AT&T? Does Miami name Shapiro as Booster of the Century?

Or is all of this moot since the NFL and NBA have age restrictions, and being the only game in town, the NCAA can set the bar?

I don't know the right answer because I don't agree 100% with either side. (Kids should be allowed to earn, but they are already getting paid a massive salary compared to their peers.)

I'm pretty sure the schools and NCAA are in on the greed as well.

He brings up some shit about the MLB '70s free agency v. reserve clause thing, but this isn't pro sports so I'm not buying it.  I'd call most Div I dudes semi-pro capable.  Sometimes I can't tell the difference between Div III and championship intramural teams.

I already think the Big Ten and other conferences should walk from the NCAA due to the treatment the SEC receives, but that's a topic for another day.

And while you might think it's a ridiculous statement, don't think for a second that it isn't an option. ALL of the Div I schools could simply disband Div I football and head to the lower brackets where the NCAA and the schools would have more power.

I mean seriously, what do you think is more likely to happen:
1. Schools stay in Div I and pay billions to the lawsuit.
2. Schools disband Div I, join another division, and pay nothing, or nothing going forward.

QUOTE
I'm pretty sure the schools and NCAA are in on the greed as well.

I'm not saying they're not. I'm saying the players already get a salary, but that is completely ignored because this suit is being filed by people who wanted to go pro or did, but failed. This isn't former players who wanted a degree, and just happened to also be good at sports. This isn't guys who did their time and then made millions as a pro. This is the guys who lived in limbo. What's ironic about that, is they're the ones who will be hurt the most by changes to the system.

I also think there's a lot less money available than the players believe. For every OSU or Alabama, there are dozens of Northwesterns. More schools run their programs on shoestring budgets than have massive budgets. OSU, Alabama, Michigan, USC, etc. are not the norm. We just hear about them the most.

Posted by TheCatt on May 06 2013,12:00
According to < this article >, the total profits of all profitable program was $331 Million.  That doesn't include the ones that lost money.  Remember, football/basketball subsidize all other sports at a lot of schools.  So a) the pie isn't that big and b) with a smaller pie, say goodbye to a lot of the Olympic sports.

So the failures are expressing their discontent?  Surprise, surprise.  When did self-delusion become the basis for a lawsuit?

You've obviously got a disconnect between "dudes who think pro sports will be their career" and "dudes who aren't under any illusion they'll make it big in pro sports."  Among the former group, you've got a small portion that has what it takes to make it, and then the vast majority who may or may not get drafted, but invariably wash out.  Those classes of dudes all want different treatment.

For the record, I think the argument O'Bannon's making is completely full of shit.
QUOTE
They want all current and future college athletes to be able to make licensing deals of their own.

Not pro sports, not the same.  University and a professional sports team are two different entities, two different worlds, two different games.

QUOTE
Whatever happens from here, the O’Bannon case has already performed a valuable service: It has exposed a system whose sole purpose is to deny the value of talented athletes.

Sort of.  It's brought light on a system run by greedy douchebags.  Unfortunately, it was brought to light by a cadre of equally greedy douchebags.

QUOTE

Football alone does make a fair amount of money, at least at the big schools:
QUOTE
The athletic department money has followed suit: 2012 produced revenue of $124.5 million and profit of $19.4 million, according to data from USA Today, up from $67.7 million in revenue and $7.1 million in profit in 2007. Football accounts for about two-thirds of all revenue and $45 million in profit, while the school’s other sports teams collectively lose money.

So all other sports combined lose $25+ million.

The NCAA basically says this investigation has been going on since 2009.

Weird how they're so willing to investigate non-SEC schools for so long, while wrapping up SEC investigations within days, while never finding fault.

Fuck you NCAA. If The Purge was real, you idiots wouldn't last an hour.

OSU will hang 45 on them. MSU had the "#1" defense a few years back but didn't do anything against a decent offense. It is all built around playing in the pathetic Big10.

OSU is going to stroll right through everyone and maybe get left out of the title game. If I had to bet I would say that 2 out of alabama, oregon, and fsu will lose but not 100% and osu strength of schedule won't be enough to pass any of them if they are undefeated.

Also its not too early. osu vs msu big 10 championship has to be the lock of all locks.

Clearly you have forgotten OSU's games against mighty Buffalo, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Iowa.  Those weren't strolls.

I disagree. I think we're going to have more than four undefeated teams at the end of the year heading into the bowl season.

This is such horseshit.

What is strength of schedule based on? Rankings. What are rankings based on? Biased human opinions.

Look, I'm not defending OSU's schedule. It's weak because the Big Ten is weak right now. It happens. People seem to forget the joke that was the SEC in the (70s?) 80s and 90s when the ACC, Big Ten, and Big 12 ruled the land. Out of conference schedules are set WAY in advance, and unless you have a psychic helping you, you can't know that Cal, who was a top ten team when you scheduled them, would drop out of the rankings when you finally played.

We did have an SEC team on our schedule this year, but they dropped the game. It was Vanderbilt who beat a ranked SEC team this year. I wonder why they'd drop OSU off their schedule...hmmm.

And the week we played ranked Northwestern, and took criticism for our schedule, #1 Alabama was playing Division II Georgia State.

Who, outside of the SEC, has Alabama played that was worth a shit? Michigan? Their #8 ranking at the time was a joke even to Michigan fans. Everyone knew that was about selling that week 1 matchup with Alabama.

Maybe we need to stop putting so much weight behind a system that ranked Michigan #5 before they lost 3 of their first 5 games including one to a Division II school, and ranked Auburn #2 before they also lost to a division II school.

Maybe we should stop ripping the only conference to publicly set a policy that their teams can't schedule DII schools anymore?

Maybe we shouldn't think too much of a ranking system that has the #7 ranked team in the country as 21 point underdogs to the #2 ranked team?

How the fuck is Texas A&M even ranked with the worst defense in the country? They have how many losses?

How is Baylor undefeated at #5 and nobody is talking about them? Nobody mentions that they're in the title picture by playing a terrible schedule. People only seem to want to rip OSU and the Big Ten. I'm sure there's no agenda there. Nah.

Was Standford really a top ten team? Really?

Do we really think undefeated NIU is only the 17th best team in the country?

How the fuck has Florida been ranked at all this year? They've been in the top 10, and they're Michigan State with a worse defense.

Georgia is way overrated. Ditto for Clemson and Taj Boyd.

Again, I'd NEVER tell you OSU's schedule is strong right now, but look around at who everyone else is playing. Look at who is ranked and where they end up at the end of the year. You're being told Team X is better than Team Y without any real justification. That's what the rankings are all about. Opinion. Are you seriously suggesting that opinion can't be swayed by constant hype from media outlets? (Did you happen to notice who the president is and what his policies are and how the media responds to them?)

As an OSU fan, I can sit here and honestly tell you that we'd get destroyed by Florida State (best team right now), we'd have a shoot out with Oregon (a team we recently destroyed in a bowl game), and we'd beat Alabama (we match up very well against them and people forget they couldn't stop Texas A&M's one man show).

Point being, stop basing your opinions on arbitrary rankings and what biased pundits tell you. Let the kids determine who is the best on the field. I mean if you want to be a slave to the rankings, perhaps you should look at OSU's offensive and defensive rankings.

Posted by TheCatt on Nov. 03 2013,11:08
I'm no slave to ratings, I'm basing this on watching OSU play this year, and watching other teams play.  FSU is looking awesome right now.  Alabama is looking great, only 1 close game against another very good team, away from home.  They are consistently dominating their opponents, unlike OSU.  Although they still have two good games left, Auburn and LSU.

I'm not sure who you are arguing against for most of your post, but it's not me.

OSU is a very good team, but I think they lose much more often than they would win against FSU or Alabama.  (I can't speak to Oregon since I never watch the Pac10/12/whatever they are now).

Would I include OSU in a 4 team playoff?  Absolutely.  But if I only get to pick two, right now it's Bama and FSU.

Is it their top 5 defense, their #1 in many offensive categories rated offense, or their two time national champship winning coach that convinces you of that?

Because I'd bet, you're just parroting talking points of folks like Mark May (who hates OSU because of the 72-0 beatdown they gave him when he played for Pitt.)

And listen, I'm not saying we're the best in the nation. In fact, I'd still call it a "rebuilding" considering we start so many freshmen and sophomores, and this is only Meyer's second year.

But I don't give a fuck who you are, 20+ game win streaks are not to be taken lightly. Giving OSU no credit for what they've done, and the players they have on the field reeks of ignorance or bias.

QUOTE

No. They beat a mediocre Texas A&M team, and barely hung on to do so. Texas A&M has, literally, a bottom 5 defense. It's tremendously awful. On offense, they are a one player wonder. Without Manziel, Texas A&M wins 3 games this year. Texas A&M is not a top 25 team. They're getting votes because of Manziel and the SEC.

And let's be honest, the little prick should be ineligible.

QUOTE

This is what pisses me off about college football. Who exactly have they played? OSU has been taking shit over their schedule, but Alabama's FAR more guilty of scheduling cream puffs.

Alabama played Virgina Tech to start their season. Not a bad team, but not exactly the cream of the ACC. I don't fault them for that though. I'm sure when the meeting was agreed upon, VT was better.

Beyond VT, here's their non-conference schedule:
Colorado State Rams
Georgia State Panthers
Chatanooga Mocs

Wow!! What a bunch of high quality opponents.

Oh, but wait, they play in the mighty SEC, so that makes up for it!! What the fuck kind of logic is that? OSU can only control their non-conference games, yet get bashed for them, while Alabama gets away with those cream puffs? We played a single DII team, and that was because they were the only ones available after Vandy (a mighty SEC team) chickened out and the last second.

Is the Big Ten down? Fuck yes they are, but is the SEC filled with good team after good team or is a lot of that bullshit hype? Do teams like Alabama really deserve credit for their schedule or do the voters get credit for it?

I mean at 7-2 LSU is somehow a top ten team, and they struggled with Furman for a half. Who struggles with a DII and move up in the polls? SEC teams, particularly ones about to play on national TV.

Look at Auburn. The laughing stock of the SEC a year ago, yet they've somehow ridden a soft schedule to #8. Just another team being falsely inflated for Alabama to beat.

If Alabama loses to ANYONE in the SEC, we'll hear about how tough the SEC is and no team can be taken lightly, even though we know that's bullshit.

If Ohio State loses to ranked MSU, we'll hear about how they were overrated all along.

And for the record, IMHO, Florida State is the best team in the nation right now.

I just find the SEC love fest to be tiresome, and I really don't understand why fans keep buying into it year after year. I'm not ripping their good teams, but the whole division, top to bottom, is not filled with NFL quality teams. Not to mention, no conference has had more smoke when it comes to cheating.

Speaking of that, based on the really in depth investigations the NCAA does on NCAA teams, it should be interesting to see what happens at Alabama now that the NCAA ruled Tennessee's player ineligible. He was caught in the same scandal as former Alabama O lineman D.J. Fluker. Fluker was there for two of Bama's titles...

Well, that's a fault of having 120 teams, and only playing ~12 games a year.  If MSU beats OSU, then it could just be a fluke.  I don't think for a moment that MSU is the better team.  OSU has the 2nd best coach in football, and a great team.  They are a top 5 team

I agree on SEC being at least somewhat overvalued.  LSU is #13, but that still seems high given their resume.  Too much inertia in the rankings.

I don't know if FSU is the best team... I'd have to see them play Alabama, or OSU, or Oregon.  And that's that problem of not having better games/smaller pool of teams.

Posted by Leisher on Nov. 03 2013,19:05
It really irritated me this weekend that the #7 team was a 21 point dog to the #2 team. That just screams that the rankings are bullshit.

Just so nobody thinks I'm just being a homer (and I am to a point), earlier this year I thought OSU was a #6-#10 team. However, over the past several weeks this very young team has started clicking more on offense and defense.

I was stunned to see that we score more points than anyone else in the country in the 1st quarter. That stat is more interesting when you consider that Meyer has been taking his foot off the gas in the second half of games while teams like Baylor (#5) just pour it on.

Realistically, I don't have a ton of confidence that OSU could beat anyone just yet. By bowl game season, they might be ready for a much stronger test, and next year, watch out. However, I do think they belong in any conversation.

At the end of the day, they're the best team from one of the major conferences, down year or not.

And the only thing that keeps me from buying into the hype against them, or anyone really, is 2002. 14 point dogs to Miami, and they won. People forget how OSU dominated that game. They completely set the tone. Haters focus on a defensive holding call that was incorrectly called pass interference. They don't mention the blown call (they ruled a receiver out, and all replays showed he was in) at the end of regulation that would have allowed OSU to convert a 3rd down, keeping the ball, killing the clock, and eliminating almost any chance that Miami even gets to overtime.

Speaking of that conference, I still get the Big Ten's move of adding Maryland and Rutgers (East coast market), but I think they would have been better served grabbing a contender to fill the void left by Michigan's struggles. They should have made a much harder push for Texas.

Does anyone else think Nick Saban isn't at least slightly interested in all that money Texas wants to throw at him? What more does he have to prove at Alabama? Meanwhile, he could go to a down conference, and build a national program back up, while also bringing that conference back up. A new challenge. Nobody thinks he isn't looking at what Meyer is doing and thinking, "Might be fun to do that."

Anyway, the SEC has easily been the best conference over the past decade, but aside from the championship games, they haven't exactly set the world on fire in the other bowl games.

The thing that really seems to be a red flag on them this year is their defense. Remember when SEC games were low scoring affairs? Now everything is a shoot out. It's something to watch.

Some questions:

How did Stanford climb back up the polls so quickly after losing to unranked Utah?

How is Clemson in the top 10? Their best win was against a team that's no longer ranked. They were destroyed by FSU. (I think that was in Clemson.)

How is Miami still in the top 15? They were massacred by FSU. Hell, they were 21 point dogs, and failed to cover.

Better question out of that game: Is a win over #7 that impressive when you were at home and favored by 21?

That's got to be baiting. You're too smart to post a statement that stupid.

Easily the worst game the Buckeyes have played this year, and I include the Michigan game.

I just have no idea what the game plan was going in or during the game. They barely used the NFL RB who was gaining 4 yards a carry, and instead kept running designed QB runs. They run that crap around 3 times a game all year, and during this game they run it about 15 times, against the nation's best defense, and on critical downs? You have arguably the best RB in college football sitting in your backfield, why aren't you using him?

Also, the knock on Braxton all year among Buckeye fans is that he can throw to the line of scrimmage and 50+ yards down field, but nowhere in between. That was on full display Saturday. I'm not sure that young man has the head for the position. He might simply be a more talented Denard Robinson. I'm not sure that the best OSU QB on the team was on the field...

Their most glaring problem is on defense though. I get OSU rewarding Luke Fickel for coaching the team in the transition year, but he sucks as a defensive coordinator. And as Urban Meyer learned on Saturday, unlike in the SEC, defense is important in the Big Ten.

Since Clemson doesn't like to play defense either, I figure we might see a 75-72 final score there.

Oh well, one loss in 25 games still isn't bad by any measure. The worst part of it all though, and the thing NOBODY talks about is how OSU AD Gene Smith fucked OSU. Why? We went 6-6 in 2011 and for some reason he didn't have the team sit out from a Bowl game when he should have known a bowl ban was coming. The team, coached by Luke Fickel, went out and got beat by Florida. Had he done the proper thing, the undefeated 2012 team would have played the undefeated Notre Dame team for the title instead of sitting home enjoying a bowl ban. No Alabama repeat.

What exactly about OSU losing to the nation's #1 ranked defense proves FSU is deserving of their free pass? Is it how they beat a 30 point underdog in their championship game, how their schedule is ranked behind ours, or maybe how their conference has a worse non-conference win rate?

I'm confused how the two are related.

Did you watch the Bucks and MSU tonight? Amazing game. Down 17 with 7 to go, they climbed back for OT. Actually missed a contested layup in regulation to win it. Lost in OT by 4, but the last bucket came off a foul after a missed 3. A loss, but a good loss.

Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 21 2014,14:55
How deep are the brackets?

162 billion to 1 is somewhere between 2^8 and 2^9.  If the brackets are 8 levels deep that would almost account for that number, plus some other variation I don't know about for the rest of it.

Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 21 2014,14:58
68 teams, basically 6 levels deep with a partial level at the beginning, 67 games.

Uh, 2^8 = 256.  2^9 = 512.

Posted by Malcolm on Jan. 21 2014,15:05
Yeah.  That seems off.  8*4 games in round 1, then 4*4 games  2*4 games, 4 games, 2 games, 1 championship.  32+16+8+4+2+1 = 63.  Winning 63 random coin tosses in a row is about 1.08 x 10^-19.   1 in 162 billion would be 1.62 x 10^-11.

EDIT: Damnit, I'm off a bit on the number of teams, was assuming a perfect tree.  Still, how are they calculating this?

Posted by Malcolm on Jan. 21 2014,15:09
Thought: are they using the rankings as weights or is it 50/50 chance of winning for each team for every game?
Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 21 2014,16:43
Okay, let's work through this.  Using 50/50 per game, because I got no idea about odds.

68 teams up front means 34 games with a possibility of 2^34 outcomes, so that's 17 billion right there.  Multiply that by round 2 which has 2^17 outcomes and clearly I've already gone off the rails.

Looking up a chart it looks like there's only 64 teams going into the real tournament.  So I presume there's an initial round to knock out the four worst?  Taking out the four worst will have 68*67*66*65 combinations, which is about 19.5 million combinations.  Now on to round 2 with 64 teams means 2^32 games or 4.3 billion combinations ... and again that's way too high already.

Hell, fuck if I know.  The overall odds they give seems orders of orders of magnitude too small to me.  I would think it should be (68*67*66*65 )*(2^32)*(2^16)*(2^8)*(2^4)*(2^2)*(2) but that's not 162 billion.

Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 21 2014,16:49
It's 67 games.  2^67... like 10^20 or something.

But no idea how they got to 168 billion.  But the initial rounds should be weighted.  The first round has 4 games, each of which is probably pretty close to 50/50.  But then the first real round has several games that are basically 100% (16v1).

They clearly feel the odds suck.   But I also have no idea how you can calculate those odds, as there are so many permutations.

QUOTE

That doesn't seem right to me.  If it were a single round of 67 games among 134 teams that would be right, but this has progressive rounds.  The teams available in round 3 depend on the results of round 2, so you have to do the odds of each round and then multiply them together.  Don't you?

Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 21 2014,16:55
Oh, wait, no.  We are getting the same answer.  Well, except I calculated the first four games on a random selection of the full field instead of on a pre-selected eight teams.  But otherwise we are getting the same result.

Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 21 2014,17:06
The 2^67 is collapsing it based on every game being 50/50, regardless of what teams are playing.

The real odds... yes, you'd have to do something crazy with those nearly infinite possibilities.

Posted by Malcolm on Jan. 22 2014,07:29
You still need to pick the winner of every game.  It's 50/50 between "winner" and "loser" every time.  Doesn't matter who advances if you fill out the entire bracket up front.

Apparently, this time it's serious because this guy is a heavy hitter.

QUOTE
"This will end up saving college sports," he said. "It will end up with fair treatment for athletes and a more sustainable, attractive product and system that everyone can get behind, just like in football, basketball, baseball and hockey at the pro level. The owners in the 1970s said free agency and competition for players would destroy those sports. All you have to do is look at those sports today -- just the opposite has happened."

First, besides a ridiculously slanted system towards the SEC in college football, what exactly does college sports need to be saved from?

Second, aren't players coming out of high school already free agents?

Third, baseball was slightly ruined by free agency because only big market teams can compete, or those willing to spend tons of money. Doesn't your system basically do the same? Goodbye small schools!

Fourth, to keep things fair, won't we need rules? Who will govern those rules? The NCAA or a new entity that's basically the NCAA? And are we to believe cheating will end under a new system?

Again, let's say the NBA gets their "3 years out of high school" rule passed, which is item #1 on Adam Silver's agenda. What's to stop schools from announcing that they'll end scholarships for athletes? They'll still have the athletic programs, but will no longer offer scholarships. Now you've got football and basketball players with their thumbs up their asses for three years?

That's the thing these jackasses trying to unionize college athletes aren't thinking about. Colleges don't need athletics. They do just fine without them. I could absolutely see a scenario where the colleges have already discussed a "nuclear" option where they cancel all sports for a year to make a point.

Posted by Leisher on May 02 2014,08:24
Playing fewer power conference foes gives them a competitive advantage over the other power conferences. It is unfair. It's the exact same argument SEC coaches have been making about how Alabama's schedule keeps allowing them to skip multiple tough games, while LSU, Georgia, and Florida maintain their tough rivalry games.

Meanwhile, their new policy of having to play a single non-SEC power conference opponent is a nice step in the right direction, but it's not awesome. So they'll schedule Indiana, Colorado, NC State, etc. Big deal.

They need to do what the Big Ten has done and ban Div II schools from being on their teams' schedules, in addition to the power conference foe and a 9 game SEC slate.

< Bad day for Big Ten >
Posted by Leisher on Sep. 07 2014,12:58
Horrible day for the Big Ten.

OSU's struggles were expected by OSU fans. Our starting QB is out for the year and we're starting a freshman, we lost four starters on the offensive line and are starting a few freshmen there, and OSU is still playing nice with Luke Fickel (the defensive co-coordinator) because apparently loyalty means more at OSU than winning. We knew VT would be tough. The MSM calling it a shocking upset are simply using hype to sell and get ratings. There was nothing shocking about it. Hell, had Barrett throw to the receiver instead of a space on that final throw we would have gone to overtime instead of VT winning by 14.

Personally, I think it's most frustrating for us because we're the most relevant team in the Big Ten. We should have won the national title two years ago. Unfortunately, stupid ass Gene Smith decided to reward Luke Fickel during his 6-5 campaign following the tattoo scandal (which Alabama has been busted for both before OSU's and after, yet has received no punishment whatsoever) by allowing him to take that team to a garbage bowl. Had we simply sat out that year, we would have not been banned from a bowl the following year and would have played Notre Dame for the title instead of Alabama.

I didn't expect Michigan State to lose.

I couldn't believe Wisconsin lost the way they did last week.

Michigan has been reeling for some time now.

Everything else is normal. Usually one or two other teams are decent, but would never be title contenders.

I honestly feel that kids going early, the Big Ten's current drought of good teams, and the MSM's love affair, particularly ESPN, with the SEC is killing the Big Ten.

Hard to recruit when all these kids hear is how awesome the SEC is, despite the truth being that only 2-3 of their teams are actually elite and half their conference is bottom feeders too. Not to mention the blatant cheating that nobody cares about, which a couple of non-SEC coaches have publicly addressed like Bob Stoops.

The Big Ten is being hit hardest because of climate, standards, and because they've taken a large brunt of heat from the SEC fans, and thus, the MSM. However, you can see the other big conferences suffering the effects as well.

OSU will still be OSU once they get past these growing pains with the new players, but the rest of the Big Ten needs to step up. Maybe the new rules the Big 5 voted on will help us out.

OSU will be in VT next year, and I'll bet they return the favor.

I'll also go out on a limb and predict that Brady Hoke gets fired after the season.

It's going to be a looooong football season though.

It's not that they're trying to fail. Except the attendance thing, that was a major fuck up by the new AD, which I covered here a few pages back in this thread.

They just keep hiring the wrong coaches. Lloyd Carr was a fine coach who Jim Tressel just happened to own. When Carr left, they thought anyone in the country would be lucky to get the job, but they discovered that a lot of coaches are afraid of high profile jobs. When Les Miles turned them down, be happy he did because he's dirty, they panicked and hired Rich Rodriguez. The boosters were livid, and were calling for his head before he stepped foot on campus. He was a terrible choice to coach Michigan, but he also wasn't given a chance to succeed. With him gone, they went for a lesser name, but a homegrown boy in Hoke. The problem with Hoke is that he's not a very good coach. He also can't compete with OSU or Penn State for recruits.

Hoke looks like he's going to be fired this year, and the rumor mill is churning with one name: Jim Harbaugh.

As an Ohio State fan, I don't want them to get Harbaugh just like you guys didn't want the Meyer rumors to be true. Harbaugh would immediately steal big recruits. He'd bring an intensity back to the program immediately.

Honestly, we need Michigan back. OSU will have a long year, but will be back on top next year. Penn State is clearly going in the right direction with a new coach, a top 5 recruiting class, and another for next year. Wisconsin will continue to churn out their 10 win milk feed teams.

If Michigan was relevant again, it'd help the conference get back to the top of the pile instead of languishing in the bottom.

In different news, you might snicker at my "the MSM's bias towards the SEC is going to destroy college football" argument, but have you seen what they're doing to the AP poll?

After week 1, several SEC teams that aren't even in the top 5 have been receiving first place votes. That list includes Texas A&M that started the season at #21 and whose only claim to fame is routing the clearly overrated #9 South Carolina. Why is that win impressive? Because they were ranked #9? What exactly are these ratings based upon? Opinion. Florida was a top ten team last year to start the season, and I'm not even sure they made a bowl game. They were routed at home by Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt!

Does #9 Texas A&M really deserve 2 first place votes? Does #8 Georgia deserves 1 first place vote? Does #3 Alabama, who gave up 500 yards passing to West Virginia deserve 2 first place votes?

Those votes help to drive up their computer points.

You've got LSU that just lost to an unranked team and was getting dominated by Wisconsin before a total coaching meltdown by the Badgers. You've got SC that got housed by Texas A&M. Meanwhile, SC beat Georgia a week after needing a miracle to beat ECU. Missouri, last year's conference runner up, just got beat at home by a bottom feeder Big Ten team. Auburn, the conference's second highest ranked team, just had a game handed to them by Kansas State when K State had the victory locked up. Don't look at the SEC's out of conference schedule either because with few exceptions, it's not very impressive.

Can you say overrated?

-Pac 12
The Pac 12 has a top 5 team and several other highly ranked teams in USC, Stanford, and UCLA.

-ACC
There's Florida State, who is a shadow of last year's team, and there's nobody else. Florida State should run the table.

-Big Ten
OSU's year ended with Braxton's shoulder. Michigan hasn't been relevant in a decade. Undefeated Penn State is a pretender. Michigan State lost the second half to Oregon. Wisconsin lost the second half to LSU. Undefeated Nebraska is a pretender. Undefeated Maryland is a pretender. Rutgers lost to Penn State.

-Big 12
Oklahoma might be the best team in the country and openly want to play any SEC team. Oklahoma State should have beaten Florida State. West Virginia had a shot of beating Alabama. K State had the game won against Auburn and gave it away.

There's five conferences there. Who are you leaving out?

The Big Ten is probably fucked because of Wisconsin and Michigan State's collapses, but if Penn State, Nebraska, or Maryland run the table (they won't), how can you leave them out over a conference whose champ has a loss or more? What happens if they go to a bowl game against a good foe and win, while the team you passed them for loses in the first round of the playoffs? It immediately invalidates this new format.

The interesting one to me is the ACC. If Florida State loses a chump game, and that's all they have left, they might be the odd man out. How thrilled will the ACC be if Florida State isn't in the playoffs?

Make no mistake, for the SEC to get two in, two power conferences have to be left out, and the Big Ten and ACC are the easiest to justify. The Big 12 is next in line, and I'd bet you anything ESPN is rooting for Oklahoma or Florida State to lose.

I think the Pac 12 is a lock and one SEC team is a lock, but again, explain how Dantonio could possibly be wrong about 4 conference champs being the four playoff teams.

Posted by TheCatt on Sep. 23 2014,17:11
Right now, it's OU, FSU, Bama, and Oregon.  So the Big Ten is definitely outside looking in, unless FSU chokes.
Posted by Leisher on Sep. 23 2014,20:26
Agreed.

If FSU stumbles, will they try to put in two SEC teams and leave 2 of the power 5 out?

This OSU-PSU game is the biggest joke I've ever seen. Urban Meyer is calling a conservative offensive that would make Jim Tressell jealous.

Meanwhile, the officials are the worst I've ever seen in my life. Bar none. They took 5 minutes to figure out the coin toss for overtime. The players had to tell them what to do! I've never seen anything like this game. They have blown calls for and against both teams. They blew an instant replay call that was blatantly obvious. Both teams were stunned by that one. Both of Penn State's scoring drives were extended multiple times by bullshit penalties. They've called timeouts for both coaches even though neither called a timeout!

ESPN's live chat is blowing up with folks who aren't even fans of either team commenting on how bad these idiots are...

These jackasses are probably going to cost us the game, and hopefully, will never work again.

In the first quarter, the officials ruled that Ohio State's Vonn Bell intercepted Hackenberg's pass at the Penn State 39. The play was reviewed and the call was upheld.

After the game, however, head referee John O'Neill said the play wasn't thoroughly reviewed.

''The play, technically, was not thoroughly reviewed due to some technical difficulties with the equipment,'' he said.

At any rate, the last two minutes of that game were pretty epic (if you were cheering against Auburn).  Find the highlights.

Only 1 team from the SEC.

I'll give the voters credit.  Instead of the bullshit "go up unless you lose" that the AP does, they're actually looking at quality of wins.  I think they also have a bias towards not over-representing any conference, but we've got a lot more games to go before that matters.

ND's low rating in the inaugural one, moving FSU down due to sloppy wins.  Agree.

I almost want an 8 team playoff though. :)

They say SOS will hurt OSU's playoff chances.

I wonder when someone on the playoff committee will say, "It just occurred to me that none of the SEC teams play anybody out of conference. All of their SOS are falsely overinflated because all the ranked teams they play are SEC teams overhyped into bullshit rankings like South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas A&M all being in the top 10 at some point this year."

And when is someone going to question how Mississippi State got all of these 5 star athletes to start committing to them out of the blue? They literally went from Northwestern status to top 5 recruiting classes overnight. This is the school that Yahoo said was trying to give Cam Newton $800k to play there...

Speaking of overrated QBs, there's talk that Braxton Miller is looking at Florida State. The way Barrett is playing, Braxton has three options:
1. Go pro (If he was good enough, people wouldn't be talking about his return to college as a graduated senior.)
2. Transfer
3. Move to RB or WR (and let's be honest, this is where he'll end up in the pros).

I like the 4 team playoff, but it does mean 1 conference will be left out each year. That sucks, but how do you do a 5 team tournament?

Posted by Leisher on Nov. 21 2014,13:15
I think they need to do something to expand the playoffs so that the conference champ from every conference gets in. Once that happens, all talk of which conference is the best goes out the window.

They could expand it to 6 so there's room for a Notre Dame or mid-major team that's excelling, like the undefeated Marshall.

I'm thrilled the Buckeyes are in, and I think they can win the whole thing, but...

This whole process was a joke. How do you put TCU at 3 one week and 6 the next? How THE FUCK was TCU ranked ahead of Baylor all year when Baylor beat TCU?

The Big 12 did this committee a HUGE favor by not having a championship game. It gave them an easy out. Nobody needs to lose their job more than their commissioner.

Meanwhile, FSU was fucking the committee all year by continuing to barely win against shitty opponents. If they lose any game this year, are they even a top ten team?

End of the day though, you have 5 Power conferences and 1 independent in Notre Dame. I'm no math major, but to me 5 + 1 = 6. Why would they create a playoff that only includes 4 teams?

They need to review this whole thing in the offseason and move it to 6 or 8 teams.

6 Teams - All 5 conference champs + an undefeated Notre Dame or an undefeated "small conference team"? or a wildcard from the Power 5. Top 2 teams get byes.

8 Teams - Same thing, but 3 wildcards and no byes.

Personally, I think the 6 team playoffs would be perfect.

That all being said, Go Buckeyes!

On top of those two, the Buckeyes have a 4 star QB that was redshirted, a 5 star athlete that played QB coming in, and I think another 4 star coming in, so we're overloaded there at the moment. VERY unusual situation for an OSU team.

Although, if I was in his ear, I'd tell him to stay there and switch to a RB/WR like Percy Harvin because NFL teams aren't going to draft him at QB.

I mean for winning those Super Bowls! Shit, that didn't happen either...

Well, at least he's leaving San Francisco by force and leaving behind a losing team and a locker room full of players that hated playing for him.

Don't worry Michigan, recruits don't follow the NFL so they won't know any of that.

This reeks of desperation on Michigan's part. They're desperate to get back to being relevant, and they really want that buzz word coach to take the job. If he turns them down, holy shit would that be amazing. It'd be a public humiliation and would make it very tough to bring in another name. You know Les Miles has to be feeling very slighted AGAIN.

And heeeerrrre's that hate for Michigan I knew you had.  :-)

I never said I didn't hate Michigan. We're rivals. Why would you think I like them? Does Catt like Duke?

However, I haven't cared about them lately. Why would I?

And can you point out the part that's factually incorrect if the $8 million a year offer, which was reported as fact, had been true? I mean, what would he have done to deserve such a ridiculously high raise?

Michigan was desperate and rightfully so. They had become a joke. Don't try to pretend that isn't the truth. They were totally irrelevant. They weren't a factor in the national championship for a while now, in the Big Ten, or even their own division this year...or since the divisions were created.

I'm thrilled they made this move. All of a sudden the Big Ten has two of the three best coaches in college. All of a sudden the Big Ten has the nation's top rivalry again. All of a sudden the Big Ten has another team that will be discussed in the national spotlight.

That's all huge. Moronic Michigan fans are running their yaps like they just won the football playoffs (reminds me a lot of how Cleveland Browns fans talk during the offseason  :D ) and telling Buckeye fans how they should be afraid and blah blah blah, but truth be told, Buckeye fans are thrilled too. I've heard not a single one moan or cry about this because it's a win for us too. A strong Michigan helps everyone in the conference, not just Michigan.

And one thing the SEC does right is their fans are smart enough to know that a strong conference means each individual team gets stronger. This isn't the NFL where teams are built through the draft and free agency. Recruiting is how you build, and a weak conference drives recruits away.

But make no mistake, you hired an asshole. Urban's an asshole too, as any successful coach is, but Harbaugh wears it on his sleeve. It's no secret that he's left enemies at every job. It's no secret that one of the reasons he likes the NFL is because he hates recruiting. It's no secret that his ultimate goal is a Super Bowl ring. So enjoy the ride for now. Enjoy the new 5 Year War. I hope Harbaugh leaves Michigan in a stronger place once he does go.

I think the big loser is San Francisco. What the fuck were they thinking? He's taken you to the NFC Championship game or the Super Bowl in 3 of 4 years, so you get rid of him? The owner picked the GM over Harbaugh and he's going to pay for that. Huge mistake.

For the record, obviously I want the win, but I can accept any loss where they were in the game. I mean they're the second youngest team in all of college football and starting a third string QB.

OK, TCU should have replaced FSU.  Better? :)

I think the lesson here, though, is that OSU doesn't want Harbaugh at UM.  FSU played in a pretty mediocre conference, and got somewhere they didn't belong cuz they won every game.  Or maybe they did... and Oregon is just that good.

As you can imagine, I'm nervous. Not the same kind of nervous prior to the Bama game though.

No nooses for me tonight. We've proven we belong, and we are still playing with a third string QB. So even if we get shelled, life goes on and we shouldn't take too much heat.

Plus, it'd make the SEC look even worse. Don't the SEC have to be rooting for an OSU victory tonight? It'll cut their failure this year. They can then claim "OSU had a dream season". However, if we lose badly, they look really bad for losing to us and other big ten teams.

I'm obviously hopeful for a victory. Florida State, whom I didn't have a lot of respect for, was hanging with Oregon through the half. Then the turnovers started and the team completely quit. I don't think the Buckeyes will quit.

It should be interesting because both offenses are nearly equal. Oregon has a faster tempo, and while they lead OSU in most categories, that lead is typically minor.

Defensively, I think Oregon ranks lower than OSU.

Speed will be interesting because OSU had more speed than Bama. If Oregon can match OSU for speed than the SEC really is in trouble.

One thing I find odd is Vegas. Had Bama beaten OSU, Bama would have been a 7 point favorite against Oregon. OSU beats Bama, in a dominating fashion in every category except score, and they're a 7 point dog against Oregon? Explain that. From what I've heard the "smart money" or the professional gamblers jumped all over that line with record money.

I've had one season in all my life that has ended in a championship, so days like today are few and far between.  I'll relax when Ohio State wins.  If they lose then it will just be another disappointment that I'm all to familiar with.

Posted by Leisher on Jan. 12 2015,08:57
Well, I have the experience so trust me!

Dump the all or bust mentality. Have that next year when they'll be expected to be there.

Find the positives and cling to them to enjoy the moment. I think you could argue that even if OSU wins tonight, the bigger win was last week.

What happened to the guy who knew Cleveland wasn't going to the Super Bowl, but just wanted to enjoy it while they were winning?

At the very least, we're the second best team in the nation. Enjoy that.

This game can really go either way.  That's the big problem with college, it's impossible to match people up based on the lack of similar opponents.  If OSU's D steps up, this game is over.  O is missing too many receivers, and OSU's D has done well against the pass.

And besides, with Meyer onboard, I would expect to be back in this game within the next few years.

Trailing Florida State by 21 with a little less than 12 minutes left, and by 73-54 with nine minutes remaining, the third-ranked Tar Heels stopped the Seminoles cold with 16 straight points and didn't stop until they had secured a stunning 82-77 victory before a frenzied sellout crowd of 21,572 at the Smith Center.

"What do you say after that?" North Carolina coach Dean Smith said after his team outscored Florida State 28-4 in the last nine minutes to win its ninth straight game. "What a great comeback. You get upset with a team for being down and now it's hard to be mad at them the way they fought and came back against a quality team."

< This article talks about the first year of the CFP and declares it the best season ever. >

Maybe it was?

Still, one part of it caught my eye, and I think it proves and sums up why people believe there is an SEC bias.

QUOTE
Why did we think the SEC West was so good? By early October, this was treated as a cold, hard fact, and not until the division finished a woeful 2-5 in its bowl games did people start to wonder if we'd been wrong all along. But the West was just 6-5 against nonconference Power 5 foes this year, and four of those wins came against teams that finished 7-6 or worse.

The biggest wins for the division came against other division members, which certainly doesn't negate its strength, but it also served as a self-fulfilling argument. Clearly both Mississippi schools turned out to be flawed, but their strengths remained the backbone of national perceptions for the entire season.

And that's the point. Those "big wins" came against teams that were ranked by an arbitrary system. South Carolina was a top ten team to start the season. Texas A&M was at #6. Ole Miss and Mississippi State were #1 and #2 for a time.

I realize ranking mistakes will occur, as it's impossible for all rankers to see all teams, but the constant hype and high rankings for SEC teams have been proven over and over again to be suspect, yet the entire BCS era, which the SEC dominated, was fueled by them.

So please ESPN talking heads, keep telling us there is no SEC bias. Hell, maybe someday you'll have said it so much that you'll even believe it.

He's 23, has a 2 month old, doesn't care about classes, and is in it for football. He can't transfer without sitting out a year, and he won't be starting over Barrett who people forget is an awesome quarterback.

If he goes to the right NFL team, he will have a good career. It has to be the right team though, and not someone desperate for a QB.

Off the top of my head, I think Arizona would be a great fit. He gets a few years behind Palmer and Bruce Arians is a wizard with QBs.

Any place with an aging vet QB would be good.

< Power 5 conferences will give athletes more money >

QUOTE
One of the big things Power Five conferences wanted to get accomplished with its new autonomy happened easily on Saturday.

In a 79-1 vote, the schools (and athletes) in the Power Five conferences – ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC – passed full cost of attendance scholarships. That means that schools can not only provide the cost of a scholarship to athletes, but also additional funds to cover other expenses. Cost of attendance varies among schools.

Boston College was the lone no vote. The Power Five conferences (and Notre Dame) make up 65 schools and 15 athletes were made delegates to bring the voting bloc to 80.

I do NOT like the performance stipulation. They can pull a player's scholarship if he doesn't perform. While I'm ALL for such stipulations in the NFL or other pro leagues, where's the protection for the student?

This will especially get ugly in the unethical SEC where oversigning is a way of life.

In another significant change, the schools and the reps narrowly approved legislation that will prevent schools and coaches from choosing not to renew an athlete's scholarship for athletic reasons. Under the system that has been in place, most athletic scholarships are subject to annual renewal

So it should cut down on oversigning, but I'm sure there will still be some ways out.  Suddenly an underperformer stops getting academic support, grades drop - scholarship gone?

Cunningham and UNC head coach Larry Fedora originally apologized to Duke in a statement issued Nov. 24. Cunningham said he called Duke AD Kevin White, while Fedora reached out to Duke coach David Cutcliffe. Cutcliffe apparently never called Fedora back.

From the News & Observer:

In a formal apology letter to Duke athletic director Kevin White on Feb. 3, Cunningham said he was disappointed that Duke football coach David Cutcliffe never returned UNC coach Larry Fedora’s apology call, which came the Friday following the game.
Additionally, at the end of his letter to Duke, Cunningham decided to include a photo of spray paint damage to UNC’s South Building where “four pillars were tagged with the letters D-U-K-E on Feb. 19, 2014, before the Duke-UNC basketball game.”

“The University of North Carolina bore the cost of sandblasting these pillars and did not make public comments of the transgression. I acknowledge we have no idea who did this, but I simply included it to demonstrate that all fans, teams, coaches, students, etc. need to appreciate and respect the rivalry.”
Cunningham and Fedora split the costs with each sending personal checks for $13,585.22 to Duke in January while the UNC players completed community service.

I dont get it.

Someone setup a Yahoo bracket for DTMan.

By the way, how far has the NIT fallen? It used to be the premier tournament and decided the national championship. I'm not sure what happened and when that shifted it to the second tier tournament, but now it gets mocked.

CBS ran a graphic after the bracket was revealed called: Close but NIT. Below those words it said "Not In Tournament".

I'm sure the NIT folks were thrilled with that.

One of the Wisconsin campus bookstore's best-selling Final Four-themed shirts no longer is available for purchase.
School officials had to yank it off the website and social media earlier this week because its compliance department feared the shirt violated NCAA rules.

The inspiration behind the shirt in question was the way Wisconsin forward Nigel Hayes has tested NCAA tournament stenographers by intentionally mixing in hard-to-spell words during news conferences. The bookstore printed a shirt featuring seven of Hayes' words in block letters: "Cattywampus, Onomatopoeia, Antidisestablishmentarianism, Soliloquy, Quandary, Zephyr, Xylophone."

Delany suggested to reporters that oversigning, grayshirting, "flipping" committed players and 7-on-7 camps, which tend to be SEC practices, are objectionable but are permissible.

You know how the Montreal Canadians won all those titles? They made a rule that they have first dibs on any player within 50 miles of them. Kind of a handy rule for them since everyone that played hockey back then lived near their city.

Adnan Virk is the host and will be joined by former Buckeye Joey Galloway and "anti-SEC" Danny Kanell.

Galloway has done a good job calling games, and his hire could be seen as an olive branch from ESPN to OSU fans (largest fan base in the nation).

< Auburn Athletics department influences course offerings. >

QUOTE
In early 2012, documents show, a panel performing a review of the Auburn political science department, which oversees public administration, expressed doubt that the major “contributes a great deal to the Department’s education mission.” In May, provost Timothy Boosinger sent a memo supporting a proposal to suspend the major by the end of the next school year.

In August, according to documents, the political science faculty voted 13-0 to remove public administration as an active major. The following March, Auburn’s academic program review committee, the final faculty body to review such proposals, voted 10-1 to place the major on “inactive status.”

But even as the proposal was zooming toward final approval, the athletic department had begun a campaign to reverse it. In February 2013, Waters, the department’s academic officer, sent an email to Jay Jacobs, the athletic director, that said it was “extremely important” that they plead their case with Boosinger and Auburn president Jay Gogue as soon as possible. On April 9, Waters and Jacobs met with Boosinger. Gogue wasn’t present.
...
Public administration majors account for less than 1% of Auburn’s undergraduate student body. But in the fall semester of 2013, documents show, 51% of the 111 students pursuing the degree were athletes. Among them were the football team’s starting quarterback and running back, its leading wide receiver and the three defensive players who led the team in interceptions, tackles and sacks.

< Karma kicks Bret Bielema's ass. >

This assclown tried to say OSU's schedule was weak and only the SEC could put 10 teams in the top 25.

Let's break that down...

The SEC put 10 teams into the top 25, but how are those teams picked? Is there some formula? No, it's just people making arbitrary rankings. People who watch ESPN. The same ESPN that has a multibillion dollar deal with the SEC and promotes them non-stop as the end all be all of college football. Remember that new college football playoff series they ran that featured ALL the SEC teams, and 1-3 teams from other conferences? Yeah, no bias there.

< Here's a good article explaining how the arbitrary rankings ensure the SEC keeps "dominating" even though their actual record against other conferences is a LOT less impressive than you're being told. >

And how did those 10 SEC teams do this weekend?

We already saw that #18 Arkansas lost.

< The #6 ranked Auburn Tigers needed a TD in the last 30 seconds to tie a FCS school, and then overtime to win. >

< #23 squandered a 17 point lead to lose in overtime on their home field. >

< #2 wasn't particularly impressive against a nobody. >

< #10 beat a doormat... >let's pretend that doormat isn't an SEC team (it is).

< #14 beat #25. >

< #21 struggled to beat a nobody. >

< #17 > and < #16 > looked good beating their mid-major opponents.

My point? The SEC gets overrated every year by people reading about their hype. Nobody has time to visit and study every college team, so a lot of their rankings are based on hearsay. It's why Auburn is probably the least successful top 5 team in history. Remember when they started the year in the top 5 and lost their first three games?

These arbitrary bullshit rankings make it seem like SEC teams play a tough schedule, when in fact, if you remove the arbitrary rankings their schedule is no more difficult than anyone else's.

If you ranked ten Big Ten teams in the top 25, it'd make OSU's weak schedule look daunting.

Smoke and mirrors.

Lindsay Powell, 24, Katina's daughter, told Outside the Lines she danced at multiple parties and was paid $100 to have sex with former Louisville point guard Russ Smith, part of the Cardinals' 2013 NCAA championship team and now a player with the Memphis Grizzlies. Katina Powell's book also mentions the allegation involving Smith, who did not respond to requests for comment.

"I believe that McGee came to my mom and said something to her about it, and my mom came to me and I was like 'OK,' and we went in another room and we had sex," Lindsay Powell said.

During another party, Rod Ni Powell, 22, another daughter of Katina's, said she was paid to have sex with former Cardinals player Montrezl Harrell, a power forward who now plays for the Houston Rockets. Katina Powell told Outside the Lines and wrote in her book that Harrell, who played with Louisville from 2012-15, had sex paid for by McGee as a recruit and as a player.

I really think Meyer was forced into starting Cardale based on last year. Plus, I think he was trying to push Barrett harder by saying things like "The other guy hasn't been him out yet."

Everyone knows Barrett is the superior QB. His QBR last year was the highest in the Big Ten and one of the highest in the nation. He had that offense humming. He was voted a captain by his team even after losing the job to Cardale. He doesn't have Cardale's deep ball, but he's more accurate, can read defenses better, and is more mobile.

It was a no brainer.

Don't sleep on the Buckeye's defense though. Cardale made great plays down the stretch last year, but the defense really stepped up. The defense has been on the field a LOT this year and has kept the Buckeyes undefeated. They have more plays under their belts than most other defenses, and now that the offense should generate more plays, they'll have more time to rest during games.

If they do go on a run of great play now the thing that will be nagging at me is are they hitting this too early? It's what was said about Michigan a week ago. Did they start their run too early, and while it did take a miracle to end their streak, it did end. Should be interesting to see how hard they play the rest of the way now that they're buried for the national championship game.

Back to early runs, Alabama might be peaking too early too. They're on a great run right now, and I don't know if they'll lose another game, but teams that peak too early tend to fizzle out later.

The CFP would be very interesting right now. Who would you put in? Only one school from each conference is allowed in and all 5 have at least one undefeated team right now.

The Big Ten almost seems like a lock to have a rep with MSU, OSU, and Iowa all undefeated. If the winner of MSU/OSU goes on to face an undefeated Iowa team, the winner is in...unless it's Iowa. I could see them getting left out if all the other conferences offer up an undefeated champ.

The ACC is probably the weakest conference, so Clemson can run the table, but if they lose I think the committee will have a hard time debating between the ACC champ and the Pac 12 champ.

The Pac 12 champ won't be undefeated as Utah doesn't look like world beaters right now. If they lose once, but win their conference, and Clemson loses once and wins their conference, who do you leave out?

The Big 12 is TCU/Baylor. The undefeated team at the end is probably in...maybe? Do they have a conference championship yet? If the Big Ten, ACC, SEC, and Pac 12 all offer up an undefeated conference champion, does the Big 12 get left out again? (Especially if it's Baylor who has the weakest SOS of anyone.)

The SEC is LSU's if they win out. If they stumble at Bama, then it'll probably be Bama/Florida unless Bama loses another game before they meet. If LSU loses then the SEC champ will have at least a loss. Do we skip the SEC if all the other conferences offer up undefeated champs? I think so. Then we'll get months of SEC people claiming their conference is too tough, and the best teams aren't in the playoffs, and other bullshit.

Posted by TheCatt on Oct. 24 2015,19:21
Right now, I think the PAC 12 gets left out, < especially if this beat-down > of Utah keeps up.

PAC 12 has a lot of skeletons.  Stanford losing to Northwestern looks horrific now.  Utah beating up a bunch of nobodies.

Assuming Baylor/TCU win out, the winner there makes it.  A close game makes it questionable for Clemson.

OSU and SEC winner are probably locked to make it.

To be fair, we don't know the details of the NCSU arrest. Dude might have been absolutely wrecked and resisted arrest or something.

Barrett blew just above the legal limit (and yes, he's underage), but didn't resist arrest or anything stupid. He's also been a model citizen other than this incident.

Plus, keep in mind we're the program that suspended our Heisman trophy candidate RB (Carlos Hyde) for a game not because he did anything wrong, but because he put himself in a situation that was bad.

But yeah, being a starting QB definitely helps lower your punishment.

Just found out Barrett has to attend mandatory counseling and lost his financial aid for next summer. And per school policy, Urban didn't have to suspend JT at all.

Also, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas, Oklahoma State, Pitt, Oklahoma, Washington, and Stanford have all done the one game suspension for DUI in recent years. So it's a standard.

I'm guessing the NC State guy has other issues.

Posted by Leisher on Nov. 04 2015,07:24
I had no issue with the top 3, but Bama being in is total bullshit.

It's SEC bias plain and simple. Look at last year's top 4 at this point which had 3!!!! SEC teams, NONE of which reached the final 4.

10 undefeated teams in the country (Toledo lost last night) and you're telling me that Bama and Notre Dame rank above 7 of them? Horseshit.

The best was when they were interviewing the spokesman for the committee and he basically said they look at Florida and Bama as having the same resume, yet Bama is 4 and Florida is 11. WTF?

I consider it their way of ensuring an SEC team will reach the final 4.

Notre Dame being there is confusing. They sent a clear message to the Big 12 that conference championships are needed, but Notre Dame isn't in a conference... If OSU makes it, please give us Notre Dame in the first round.

Meanwhile, the Pac12 is fucked.

OSU will probably climb in their ranking if they win out over undefeated #7 MSU, #12 Michigan, and undefeated #9 Iowa.

If Florida State or Duke/NC knock off Clemson the ACC is out. And hey, they talk about strength of schedule and there are only 2 ranked teams in the ACC. Why is Clemson #1? Just saying.

Posted by Leisher on Nov. 16 2015,11:11
I'm not sure you need all that.

The Pac 12 is out.

The SEC is down to Bama and Florida. If Bama beats Florida, then Florida is out.

The ACC is all Clemson right now, but if NC beats them then NC joins the

The Big Ten is OSU and Iowa. OSU has the much tougher road with MSU and Michigan in the next two weeks. They can lose to MSU and still win the Big Ten, but if they lose to Michigan then 2 loss Michigan will play undefeated Iowa for the conference title.

The Big 12 is a bunch of 1 loss teams with bad losses and no conference championship.

Notre Dame still plays Stanford.

So what you really need is Bama to beat Florida, NC to beat Clemson, OSU to go undefeated, Notre Dame to lose to Standford, and maybe you'll be in? If all the Big 12 teams finish with 2 losses in this scenario, you're a lock.

Posted by TheCatt on Nov. 16 2015,12:33
Yeah, I realize we don't quite need that much to help just to get in... but I'll take all the help we can get :)

I mean, OSU winning out eliminates MSU and Iowa.  Bama winning out gets rid of Florida.  We have the opportunity to eliminate Clemson ourselves by winning out, especially if we can be convincing against NCSU and VaTech.

Notre Dame needs to lose to Stanford. Stanford needs to lose the PAC to make me feel better.

Then all that's left is the Big 12.  If either 1) they all have 2 losses, or 2) One wins out, everyone else has 2 losses, we're good.

I don't really think we're a top 10 (much less CFP) team... but hey, why not.  I definitely could see some coach of the year votes/awards going our way.

I took my family to the UNC - Duke game.  We had to take a park and ride to get to the stadium, as it's in the middle of the school campus, and there's no parking anywhere.  (Tickets for the game: $30 each; Parking on campus: $60+)

We parked, walked a long walk to the buses, stood in a long line, got on the bus... and waited 30 minutes to drive 2 miles (since bus traffic is not separated from road traffic).  Then had to walk another 1/3rd of a mile to the stadium.

It's just not easy to get to the damned stadium.

Contrast that with FedEx field.  More people, but tons of on site parking, and pretty easy access to the Interstate.  Typically about 45 minutes each way from Alexandria, Va, versus 1 hour 45 minutes for us from Cary -> Chapel HIll (about the same distance)

On the one hand, yeah, I'd be mad.

On the OTHER hand... I mean, we lost to SC.  Barely, with some bad turnovers and bad times.  And we really wouldn't have beat anyone BUT Clemson.

On the other other hand, shit gets confusing once you look at comparative records. I mean OSU lost to MSU, but MSU lost to Nebraska, doesn't that make OSU better?

How is 2-loss Stanford so far up there?  I hope USC gets revenge.

Posted by Leisher on Dec. 01 2015,06:16
If upsets happen this weekend, and I don't think they will (they never do when they're telegraphed like this), I don't understand how you could argue for a 2 loss Pac 12 team over a one loss ACC champ or even the 1 loss defending champion.

Right now, I've made my peace with:
Clemson
Oklahoma
Big Ten Champ
Bama
as the top 4. Yeah, OSU's resume is actually better than Bama's, but Bama won their conference, OSU didn't.

However, if Bama loses, I think OSU should be the next team in. If Clemson and Bama lose, then OSU and NC should be in. If just Clemson loses, then I'd be ok with NC getting in over us, but I'd still be pissed that weak ass Bama is in.

If I was you, I'd be pissed that the weak ass SEC gets more credit than the ACC. Colin Cowherd made a phenomenal case yesterday that the SEC is secretly the weakest conference in the country and nobody can admit it because all we hear every year is SEC hype.

Why is a one loss SEC champ better than a one loss ACC champ?

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 01 2015,14:52
Well, I think the SEC does have history.  And with as little head-to-head competition as there is, it fills the information void.

I really don't think UNC is a top 10 team.  I just don't.  I love the team, and the coaches are great, but the player talent isn't quite there, and we've gotten somewhat lucky with an easy schedule.

This year they had Clemson who half their own state hates, Oklahoma who everyone knows comes out of a weak conference, Bama and their one hit wonder, and MSU who had no business being there (played Oregon without their starting QB, beat Michigan on a fluke final play, and beat OSU without the terrible Conner Cook and in the rain during OSU's worst coached game in Meyer's tenure). OSU did their part to fuck things up, of course, but that muffed punt MSU got against Michigan is the play that sent them, wrongfully, into the playoffs.

Someone was breaking things down, I think Cowherd, and if OSU makes the playoffs, all the Big Ten bowl match ups are far more favorable, particularly for the idiots that got blown out: MSU, NW, and Iowa.

Iowa not playing anyone allowed them to fake their way into a big bowl.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma proved the Big 12 is crazy overrated and will be until Tom Herman (the best offensive mind on the planet) gets the Texas job.

Stanford #3, really?

Yeah, MSU really didn't belong.  OSU should have been there, but shit happened.

UNC at #15 - I'll take it, a damned good year for us.

< Saban says he's not retiring. >

Cowherd made a really strong argument for an NFL team to steal Saban. You could make him the highest paid NFL coach for 2% of your TV check each year. There's some wisdom there.

If you're Saban and sitting and 5 national titles, don't you at least consider a huge payday from the NFL? What if Cincinnati made you an offer today?

We have a loaded team with a good QB and your former player as a backup. We need discipline and a winning attitude. We'll give you $10 million a year for 5 years and you can have a large say on players. Don't you take that deal?

The University of Texas says an internal investigation has found no evidence of academic misconduct within the men’s basketball program.

Texas President Greg Fenves ordered the probe last June after the Chronicle of Higher Education alleged three incidents of cheating, improper assistance and school policy violations over a nine-year period.

I thought it was an automatic that the players get free passes to class.

But he does have a lot left to prove at the NFL level and I promise you that it eats at him. He was in a bad situation in Miami. Bad ownership there. You really think he doesn't see what Pete Carroll is doing and mumble that he's 10x the coach? I know he does.

The question really comes down to leaving a gig where he's getting a bit more credit than he deserves (and understand that he deserves a TON), is being paid well, his wife is happy, etc.

Harbaugh is a bad example because it wasn't his choice to leave. He clashed with the owner. Truth be told, he's clashed with people everywhere he's been. Hell, he had a feud with Michigan and he just played there. He'll be back in the NFL, but it'll have to be the right situation. I think he learned that he'll need a Belichick or Tomlin situation before he can go back.

Oregon State's Jarmal Reid intentionally trips official and gets ejected.

< article w/video. >

The first shot they show, you can't tell, but once they show it from the front, it's obvious. He looks right at the official and then extends his leg.

The Pac12 is reviewing, and honestly, they need to make an example of this kid. He needs to be suspended the rest of the year.

OSU is in the first 8 out and they should be. The win against Kentucky was awesome, but this team has a lot of growing to do before they can make a tournament run.

The Ivy League was reclassified to I-AA (FCS) following the 1981 season and plays a strict ten-game schedule. Although it qualifies for an automatic bid, the Ivy League has not played any postseason games at all since 1956, citing academic concerns.

It;s good in the sense that it's $, right?

Many of the bottom quarter of students at Ivy League schools are athletes.  Why?  Because otherwise, they would basically be failures at those schools with such high competition, and they won't be the top academic students.  But, being able to compete in sports against other less talented schools actually gives them a leg up in life in terms of life success.

The MSM is trying to sell us on how great this tournament is, but I think this weekend was the latest example of why it's the worst ever.

College basketball has become a wasteland of zero talent. The one and done rule has got to go. It's destroying the game.

In related news, I'm the kiss of death right now. I picked MSU to win it all and they're gone. I drew Kansas' name out of a hat for a Sweet Sixteen pool and they're gone. I was rooting for the Big 10, and they're all gone. The last time I placed a bet was on the Golden State fucking Warriors and they LOST!!!! Just a bad, bad streak.

So taking all that into account, Go Syracuse!

Hah!

I dunno, I've rather enjoyed the tournament.  Setting aside my fanboyism of the Heels...  I've still enjoyed it.  The Syracuse - Virginia game was thrilling.  Several other close games and comebacks.  Turmoil.  I mean, that's what March Madness is supposed to be about.  Final weekend, only 1 #1 seed left.
