Eh ... there's a real forest people go to in Japan and it's very fashionable to hang yourself there.  Given some of the cultural modes over there, it's not hard to jump from that to ghosts to "true" story.  It's Amityville true.

Yeah, that's what started the conversation. When a 6 year old hears a horror movie trailer say "True Story" it gives parents something to explain.

Sometimes "based on a true story" just means "based on lies previously told by someone else".

I taught my kid early on that almost all advertisements are lies.
