Damon played such an annoying douche in Interstellar I'm having a hard time getting past that.

Snap.

Oh, fuck!  This is one spectacularly awesome book.  I am extremely excited.

Although as much excellent detail as there is in the book, it would make a better mini-series than a movie.

Damon puts douche taint on everything he's in.

I assume not a spoiler...

That cartoon is the basis of like 90% of all the sci-fi written between 1938 and 1950.
Posted by TPRJones on Jun. 10 2015,12:30
Very accurate descriptions.  The Martian is a bit of a throwback to those old hard sci-fi books, but with actual well-written multidimensional characters as well.
Posted by GORDON on Jun. 10 2015,13:34
That's like the entirety of the first 10 years of Asimov's career as a writer.
Posted by TPRJones on Jun. 10 2015,14:19
I never found Asimov's characters to be very deep.  He was the main one I had in mind when I wrote that exception.

Now Heinlein, there's a sci-fi author that could write interesting characters.  But his sci was generally a bit more fi than Asimov.

Posted by GORDON on Jun. 10 2015,14:21
I've read everything Asimov wrote for his first 20 years, and have read so much about him and his process, that I might as well be considered an Asimov scholar (not really).... and I can conclusively state that he himself admitted that he only really knew how to write about scientists, and he absolutely DID NOT know how to write women.  That's his own admission.
Posted by TPRJones on Jun. 10 2015,14:41
Yup.  Still a great author, though.
Posted by Malcolm on Jun. 10 2015,17:17
Asimov was always one of those dudes I felt required to like.  Not that there's nothing there, but he's not in my upper tier of favourite authors.  He was the most British American author I've ever read.  His constructed worlds are places I think I'd try to escape from, even the nice ones.

Another trailer is out: < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ej3ioOneTy8 >

This is going to rock.  Still can't imagine how they can squeeze that awesome book into a single movie, though.

Me and my kid will be going to see it, he says it looks awesome.

The other day I borrowed the "I'm going to have to science the shit out of it" line.... when the cub scouts were doing their thing in my back yard, and the scouting rule for camping is "Leave no trace," I told them they were going to "Leave no trace the shit out of my yard."

I am a good role model in every way.

I have some vague memory of TPR saying that it was like that one scene in Apollo 13 (?) where they fixed the air thingy, but I can't find that comment.

I started reading the book today on my flight to Vegas, got halfway through, and it's pretty awesome so far.

So.... I posted it?  Good work on the memory there, brain.

Heh, I didn't even scroll up to look and see you'd already posted it before.  I just remembered the comic and posted it in response to your comment.

EDIT: But I consider your confusing me with XKCD to be one of the nicest things you've ever said about me.

Good flick.  I've always liked the Asmovian "Science saves the day!" brand of sci fi.

Read the book a month or so ago. I am quite over the gawker-style internet blog banter that was used. "So..yeah...I'm a space pirate."

Saw the movie. Props to whatever screen writer worked Glorfindel in there.

Yes, the Counsel bit was pretty great.

Esp w Sean Bean in the room. I half expected him to say something like "One does not simply .... " whatever.

I thought the ditzy black dreadlock astromechanics guy was stupid, though.

Probably spoilers from here on out.

Congratulations to The Martian for < winning the Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical. >

Look forward to watching this on video some day

MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW (will be meaningless to anyone who has not read the book)...

Every single detail except the names have been changed from the books, from the sols on which events occur to the size of the hab, rovers, and ships to the tools he has available to even the number of potatoes he starts with and how he manages the soil (and all that's just the first few minutes, it keeps going like that).  Not bad, just all different.  I noticed only because I just read the book again, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to tell.  Just thought that was interesting.

It certainly has the spirit of the book done right, and the story is relatively intact (a couple of scenes are oddly out of order for some reason, but that's okay).  I like it quite a bit.

The only real complaint I have is the airlock incident.  It was almost but not entirely cut, and it was one of my favorite bits.  Oh, well.

How in the world did it win for Comedy/Musical?  Sure there's some funny bits and some disco, but how is it not a drama?

I think it was the Leather Goddesses of Phobos joke.  If Lost in Translation is a comedy, then everything's a fucking comedy, including infomercials.

Wait a minute.  Why is the MAV booster full of bathroom?  That's not how space exploration vehicles work.  Not at all.

EDIT: And all the free-fall bits are totally wrong.  Still a good movie, but wow.

Posted by GORDON on Jan. 30 2016,19:04
1.  I think it's pretty retarded to call this a comedy.  Having a character with levity didn't make this any less a drama.  It's insulting, I think.

2.  The bluray extras are really good, including a long documentary from 2042, 7 years after the mission, that retrospectively explained all the back room politics that happened.

Really enjoyed this movie.

Donald Glover. He was great in Community.

That bugged the shit out of me too.

Another thing that bugged me was the final part of the rescue. They plan everything else out, but worry about launching him and picking him up AFTER they slingshot the Hermes around Earth?
