Gripe away, Leisher.

I REALLY want to introduce my kid to Mad Max, but I think it is all just too rapey, overall.Mad Max 1: blatant rape, hetero and otherwise. Mad Max 2: blatant rape and homosexual S&M themes. Mad Max 3: safe. Mad Max: Fury Road: the entire movie is based on a group of women tired of being raped and running away. Then there's that weird human milking farm. And the one portly gentleman who seemed to enjoy his nipple clamps. I think it's all just too adult themed. Posted by TheCatt on May 28 2015,11:14
Yeah, but the FR rapey stuff is never on camera, and nothing more than a plot device for the action. The milky farm is a little weird, and hey - what's wrong with nipple clamps? Maybe your kid would like them too?Well, it's rated R for a reason, yes? Posted by GORDON on May 28 2015,11:17
I was just telling some self-righteous prick in the Fark thread who was telling everyone how they were all bad parents for letting their <15yo kids watch the alien movies, predators, etc...QUOTE My kid knows aliens and predators and monsters and gremlins and ghosts are fake. They don't bother him, and I like that he's never had night terrors like I did at his age.
But rape and those other adult themes in the Mad Max movies.... am I supposed to tell him they aren't real? He still thinks babies are made with "tongue kissing which causes DNA exchange." I am fine with him thinking that, for now. He's 9. I guess I could tell him that the women were running from Imortan Joe because they were tired of all the forced tongue kissing. Posted by Leisher on May 28 2015,11:22
Yeah, not for your kid.Anyway, here's my list of questions and gripes: 1. Mad Max was essentially just an observer almost the entire flick. Hell, even his most badass moment happened off screen. And how lame is it that he's essentially beaten and dead in the first two minutes? 2. They never get into the relationship he has with his car. He makes one comment later when he sees it, but only to point out that it was his. 3. Who is Immortal Joe? 4. Why doesn't he do something about crops with that water? Where's that water coming from? 5. What's with the albinos? 6. Why does Joe have so much sway that the head bosses of the ammo and gas bases have to leave safety to travel with him? 7. What's the deal with the people at the pass? Where's their base? Why are they so powerful yet inept? Why didn't they attack late during the second passing? Who cleared the pass? 8. Just because they raced back first, they win? What happens when that army gets through the pass again? 9. Why would he walk off with nothing? He's so badass he doesn't need a car, water, food, weapons, etc? Stick around for 1 day and get all that stuff, then go. 10. Are his ghosts real? If not, how did they save his life? 11. What's with the crows? 12. Wasn't he wrong about the salt? Think about it. He has to be... 13. Why are there no babies being born? They're all mutated? Why? 14. Who destroyed the world? 15. Where'd those normal and hot women come from? 16. What happened to Furiosa or whatever that made her leave the green place? Where's her arm? 17. Why did the blood bank concept help? Who was checking for blood types? Posted by Malcolm on May 28 2015,11:25
QUOTE He still thinks babies are made with "tongue kissing which causes DNA exchange." I am fine with him thinking that, for now. He's 9. Wtf? Even if he can't handle the emotional baggage fucking can bring to the table, the physical aspect needs to be understood. Posted by GORDON on May 28 2015,11:26
There's a fan theory that it isn't the original Max at all, it's the Feral Kid kind of keeping the legend alive.

(GORDON @ May 28 2015,13:26) QUOTE There's a fan theory that it isn't the original Max at all, it's the Feral Kid kind of keeping the legend alive. A strategically placed boomerang would go a long way to confirm that. Posted by TheCatt on May 28 2015,11:35

QUOTE 1. Mad Max was essentially just an observer almost the entire flick. Hell, even his most badass moment happened off screen. And how lame is it that he's essentially beaten and dead in the first two minutes? He's just a vehicle for the plot/action. QUOTE 2. They never get into the relationship he has with his car. He makes one comment later when he sees it, but only to point out that it was his. They reference it for historical reasons only. QUOTE 3. Who is Immortal Joe? Immortan Joe. Clearly the ruler of that tribe. QUOTE 4. Why doesn't he do something about crops with that water? Where's that water coming from? He does, look at the green on top of the rocks, or inside his living quarters. It's pipe up from underground reservoirs (this was explained in the movie) QUOTE 5. What's with the albinos? I thought that was paint? Don't they show them being painted? It's a sign of being part of the war army. QUOTE 6. Why does Joe have so much sway that the head bosses of the ammo and gas bases have to leave safety to travel with him? They are brothers. QUOTE 7. What's the deal with the people at the pass? Where's their base? Why are they so powerful yet inept? Why didn't they attack late during the second passing? Who cleared the pass? They are basically bandits. They were promised the fuel, and only wanted the fuel. Their "power" comes from the pass, although, there doesn't seem to be jack shit on the other side of the pass. Joe's army, or this army, cleared the pass. QUOTE 8. Just because they raced back first, they win? What happens when that army gets through the pass again? Yeah, that's a little weak, but basically the army was out of the colony, they get back first, they control the water? 9. Why would he walk off with nothing? He's so badass he doesn't need a car, water, food, weapons, etc? Stick around for 1 day and get all that stuff, then go. QUOTE 10. Are his ghosts real? If not, how did they save his life? Are any ghosts real? Lucky timing? QUOTE 11. What's with the crows? They're just crows. QUOTE 12. Wasn't he wrong about the salt? Think about it. He has to be... Why? QUOTE 13. Why are there no babies being born? They're all mutated? Why? Babies are being born, did you see the one that came out of the hot chick? QUOTE 14. Who destroyed the world? Who cares? QUOTE 15. Where'd those normal and hot women come from? Everyone is normal, but only a few get picked to be hot wives, who are then taken care of. Joe had lots of wives (remember the fat milking ones?). These were his favorite (for obvious visual reasons) QUOTE 16. What happened to Furiosa or whatever that made her leave the green place? Where's her arm? She was kidnapped, along with her mother. They explained this in the movie too. QUOTE 17. Why did the blood bank concept help? Who was checking for blood types? Someone clearly was, since they marked Max as a universal donor. The blood bank helped because they were low on blood? (The guy had recently been in some kind of combat) Anemic? They didn't look like a terribly healthy bunch, so any healthy blood could be a boost. Posted by Leisher on May 28 2015,12:29
QUOTE He's just a vehicle for the plot/action. I found it odd that you could remove the main character and the story would almost be completely unaffected. QUOTE They reference it for historical reasons only. I assume it will be important for the sequel. I hope the sequel begins with him at the pass stealing his car back. QUOTE Immortan Joe. Clearly the ruler of that tribe. I really thought it was "Immortal". And I know he was the ruler. Why? I want his backstory. He was pretty interesting. He was clearly weak until they put him in that body armor. QUOTE He does, look at the green on top of the rocks, or inside his living quarters. It's pipe up from underground reservoirs (this was explained in the movie) I heard the piped up part, but it still seems they could have done more. Would have been interesting in the green place was a hidden cove that only Joe and his innermost peeps know about. QUOTE I thought that was paint? Don't they show them being painted? It's a sign of being part of the war army. What kind of paint sticks forever? They were hairless too. Even after days when Max was showing stubble, they weren't. QUOTE They are brothers. I got that, but this was a LOT of effort for some pussy. QUOTE They are basically bandits. They were promised the fuel, and only wanted the fuel. Their "power" comes from the pass, although, there doesn't seem to be jack shit on the other side of the pass. Joe's army, or this army, cleared the pass. This reminded me of playing an RPG. You start at the Citadel and go out into the land, but the area around it (the starting point in the game) is inhabited by pussies. Why the fortress? To hide from some dirtbikers? I wanted a real threat out there. QUOTE They're just crows. Look again. I'm pretty sure they were people walking through the bog on sticks attached to their arms and legs. In fact, there was a bird in the shot with the big crow, and that bird was scaled as if the crow was a person. QUOTE Why? Because the salt was clearly an ocean. If this was post apocalypse, and they survived, it stands to reason that other people (and water) lie beyond the former ocean. QUOTE Babies are being born, did you see the one that came out of the hot chick? No. Not normal babies. That's why those women were so important and why people were asking where he got them. It's why they made a big deal out of the (dead) baby in the hot chick being perfect. QUOTE Who cares? The people in the movie who asked it in more than one scene. QUOTE Everyone is normal, but only a few get picked to be hot wives, who are then taken care of. Joe had lots of wives (remember the fat milking ones?). These were his favorite (for obvious visual reasons) The milk maids weren't his wives or I never heard that connection. Everyone was NOT normal. Hell, Joe's large son was a mutant. QUOTE She was kidnapped, along with her mother. They explained this in the movie too. I know! You're answering questions like I didn't listen to the movie. Go read my review. My biggest complaint is that it felt like we were dropped into the middle of a story. What happened to them? How did they get taken without anyone in the green place noticing? Where the fuck is her arm? Where the fuck are the remnants of the "green place"? It sure as fuck looked like a sand dune next to a missing ocean to me. QUOTE Someone clearly was, since they marked Max as a universal donor. The blood bank helped because they were low on blood? (The guy had recently been in some kind of combat) Anemic? They didn't look like a terribly healthy bunch, so any healthy blood could be a boost. If they marked Max as a universal donor I missed that. Also missed the lab equipment used to check blood types... Posted by TheCatt on May 28 2015,13:11
You want a Mad Max World... not just the movie we were given.Maybe you can raise Tolkein from the dead? Posted by TheCatt on May 28 2015,13:12
(Leisher @ May 28 2015,15:29) QUOTE If they marked Max as a universal donor I missed that. Also missed the lab equipment used to check blood types... They mentioned it in voice, and they tattoed it onto his back, so they actually referenced it twice. Posted by TheCatt on May 28 2015,13:13

Oh right, the crows were people... I had forgotten. It was muddy -> You use stilts to avoid trench foot, I assume. Ever had trench foot? Not fun.

(Leisher @ May 28 2015,15:29) QUOTE QUOTE I thought that was paint? Don't they show them being painted? It's a sign of being part of the war army. What kind of paint sticks forever? They were hairless too. Even after days when Max was showing stubble, they weren't. < It's paint > I distinctly remember some kid being painted during the movie, but it's also possible I made that up. Posted by Leisher on May 28 2015,13:41
I do want Mad Max world. Where is Tolkien's body?I don't remember the boy getting painted, but that doesn't explain the lack of hair growth unless the paint inhibits it? I also could not read the body paint. That still helps. Anyone remember Autoduel? Amazing game and set in a Mad Max like universe. If they could mix Mad Max and Autoduel, they'd be onto something. Posted by GORDON on May 28 2015,14:17
I think it was assumed some, if not all, of the War Boys (the white guys) had Leukemia. A "blood bag" universal donor like Max would help with that if you need a quick boost of energy in order to go out with a WITNESS ME.They mentioned shit kept getting poisoned... one assumes with radiation. Cancer, tumors, and leukemia. Posted by Malcolm on May 28 2015,14:32

QUOTE 1. Mad Max was essentially just an observer almost the entire flick. Hell, even his most badass moment happened off screen. And how lame is it that he's essentially beaten and dead in the first two minutes? Bah. He's climbing on a speeding big rig with fuckers launching harpoons and explosive-tipped spears at him. He also shoots flying motorcyclists out of the air while they rain death from above with IEDs and molotovs. QUOTE 2. They never get into the relationship he has with his car. He makes one comment later when he sees it, but only to point out that it was his. I was half expecting him to jump in and reclaim it. QUOTE 3. Who is Immortal Joe? QUOTE Immortan Joe. Clearly the ruler of that tribe. Yeah. I don't want his wikipedia bio. I can take a guess how he gained his rank. QUOTE 6. Why does Joe have so much sway that the head bosses of the ammo and gas bases have to leave safety to travel with him? QUOTE They are brothers. I get the feeling Joe is related to the entire ruling class in the area, one way or another. Whether he's a father or brother is up for grabs. QUOTE 7. What's the deal with the people at the pass? Where's their base? Why are they so powerful yet inept? Why didn't they attack late during the second passing? Who cleared the pass? Obviously dudes that try to own that pass like Iran owns the Strait of Hormuz. I'm betting they let Joe move the rubble to get his vehicles through because: i. He knows they detonated it in the first place. ii. They don't want to clear it or don't have the resources. iii. They know it's better to have a cleared pass than a blocked one, otherwise they can't play toll booth operator anymore. QUOTE 8. Just because they raced back first, they win? What happens when that army gets through the pass again? They get back first with Joe's corpse. The army's going to be stuck digging its way out of rubble for a bit. Citadel has either fortifications or defenses enough to hold back the remainder of the war parties. The remnants can't afford a siege because they can't outlast the fuel, food, or water supply of a settlement. Who's to say the gang on the other side of the wreck doesn't take the chance to wipe out the stragglers and steal their shit? QUOTE 9. Why would he walk off with nothing? He's so badass he doesn't need a car, water, food, weapons, etc? Stick around for 1 day and get all that stuff, then go. Eh, I'll chalk that up to a cinematic exit. Perhaps he goes to a local vendor, mentions how he helped rip Joe's jaw off, and gets a large donation. QUOTE 10. Are his ghosts real? If not, how did they save his life? QUOTE Are any ghosts real? Lucky timing? Yeah, don't read too much into that. QUOTE 12. Wasn't he wrong about the salt? Think about it. He has to be... QUOTE Why? For all we know, he came from that direction and knows there's nothing out there. QUOTE 13. Why are there no babies being born? They're all mutated? Why? QUOTE Babies are being born, did you see the one that came out of the hot chick? There are plenty of kids. I get the feeling that only the privileged few are genetically and biologically healthy enough to carry on bloodlines, though. QUOTE 14. Who destroyed the world? QUOTE Who cares? Seconded. QUOTE 16. What happened to Furiosa ... Where's her arm? Fucking Necronomicon. QUOTE 17. Why did the blood bank concept help? Who was checking for blood types? QUOTE Someone clearly was, since they marked Max as a universal donor. The blood bank helped because they were low on blood? (The guy had recently been in some kind of combat) Anemic? They didn't look like a terribly healthy bunch, so any healthy blood could be a boost. I was under the impression that most war boys, including Nux, suffered from some sort of chronic and fatal disease whose symptoms included boils. It looked treatable but not curable because you can see Joe afflicted with it as he emerges from his bath at the start. Perhaps regular transfusions help but I'm at a loss how you wouldn't infect the human blood bag. |
