It's $10 on Steam.
Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 14 2008,06:03
I just installed Steam last night on my new laptop, and was pondering getting a game to play. Hmmmmmmmm

FYI, I am waiting for other peeps to pick up Left4Dead. I will only be buying it via Steam.

It is getting rave reviews.

Best part is that we could keep it to dtman folks only without a problem.

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 14 2008,11:38
So why is L4D $40 on Amazon, but $50 on Steam?

Tried that on my buddy's 360.  Fairly amusing.

Bought.  You'll all be kicking my ass soon enough.

And I have a 3-day guest pass for anyone that doesn't own it and wants to try.

I have over 91 hours as a sniper, alone.

It's kinda entertaining.

And, to be honest, I don't know anything more about the game than what that says, so it's not like I have anything to add.

Zombie apocalypse you play as one of four survivors and must make you way through four different settings/campaigns.

From what I understand the campaigns aren't really long but there is an A.I. director that monitors that game and moves the zombies to different locations and in different numbers depending on how well the group is playing. So there isn't the sort of invisible line that you cross in games like doom that triggers a monsters. They come during different time and different places.

If you get tired of you vs the A.I. you can play versus mode which left four people play the humans and then four others control the different boss zombie characters and the A.I. director still controls the generic zombies.

Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 15 2008,15:41
All the campaigns are have really bad horror flick titles...

Blood Harvest
Death Toll, etc...

Four survivors try to escape & kill zombies.  Each campaign has a theme, but they all end w\ the survivors escaping after they find the campaign's radio & make a last stand.

There's your normal zombies & your special zombies.  During single or limited co-op play, you get to be a survivor.  Online/multi means that others can be special zombies as well (from how shyte was explained to me).

Even if you die, there's places where you can respawn.  Weapon selection was a bit limited (the SMG seemed useless).

DAMMIT.

I was having my best round like evar, and the server crashed.

TF2.

I had finally decided to be a soldier, since we had enough of the other classes, and was just running in, popping a few people, running out, rinse/repeat.

I think I had at least 5 kills, and then... disconnected.

Wanna be friends?

Not that I'm sure how to look up someone to friend them, haven't tried yet.  If it works by player name I go by *DEAD* because it's an accurate discription of my primary playstyle.

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 16 2008,07:36
Um, we are friends already.  I went to the server you were on last night just cuz you were on it.

You were red, I was blue.  Not sure what role you were playing, but we never met up in combat.  iirc, it was a big server (16 on each team).

To find someone, just click on "friends" in the server lookup window, and it will show you what servers they are on.

Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2008,07:41
Wait, are you Bubba HO-HO-HO-tep, then?  I thought that was someone else.  I know you aren't Dead Horse.

That's the only friends I saw online last night.

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 16 2008,07:46
I'm TheCatt (or BillTheCatt, not sure how it lists it)
Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 16 2008,07:46
You were online first... I got on, around 8:30 to 9:00?
Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2008,07:51
Oh, yeah, look, there you are now.  On my Steam friend's list.

Huh.  I seriously don't remember friending you.  Okay, then.

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 16 2008,08:21
Hahah. Yeah, I did the free weekend thing back in ... August? or such and we all friended each other then

That must have been the time TPR joined the server I was on.... too bad I missed you.  I logged off about 8:30 for some dinner and Buffy.

That's prolly my fave server, and map.

Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 16 2008,09:56
Had never played that map before, so took me a while just to figure out where i was going.
Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2008,10:43
Every time I am tempted to donate $ to that server, they vocally whine about other people and it is a turnoff.
Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2008,13:51
Eh, Warpath is okay, but not great.  And it certainly shouldn't be on a short respawn timer like that.  Too hectic and not much use for strategy beyond "keep throwing people at them to hold them back while we charge up four ubers to use at once."

I'll play it when I see a friend there, but otherwise it's not one I would pick.

Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2008,15:54
I like Warpath in that the map has a little of everything... open areas, tight corners, points where you need snipers, points where snipers are useless.

I could agree about the respawn timer, though.  What's your fave?

Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2008,18:50
I don't really have a favorite map, I prefer the variety of a server with lots of maps.  I like more maps than I dislike.  And even the ones I don't like (like Wacky Races or Hall of Death or 2Fort) can be enjoyable in moderation.

Generally I do like the payload maps the best.  Pushing the cart is fun!

Posted by Leisher on Dec. 17 2008,05:57
I agree. Payload maps are the best. Although, I do love Warpath.
Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 17 2008,06:52
Part of why I play TF2 is because I like the art style.  It's just nice to look at.  Warpath is so ... empty.  Not as much to look at.

You can look at the snapshot of me as I put a round through your head.

I've seen that quite a bit already, thank you.  :p
Posted by GORDON on Dec. 17 2008,07:31
So, at least you have that going for you....
Posted by GORDON on Dec. 18 2008,16:13
Rebuilt my system, and was anxious to snipe a bit to see how it was.

I had an amazing round...

I'll start by saying my record number of points achieved as a sniper is 24, in a single life.  It was on the Turbine map, and I only quit gaining points because the round ended... I didn't die.

So I jumped on my fave Warpath server last night, chose red, and sniper, and off I went.

Played a few rounds I was doing well enough (somewhere around a 1.75:1 k:d ratio), but here is one notable happenstance:

I respawned, and blue owned the middle point and was pushing toward our point 2, which is where most maps stall for quite a while as one team tries to break the defenses of the other.  I walked out of the spawn point, saw a teleporter, and stepped in.... our engineer had built the exit and an engineer base inside the garage door of the middle point... basically behind enemy lines.  I've never seen this done before, and didn't know if it was an exploit or not, but it basically allowed for an impenetrable staging point for our team.  I stood inside and sniped out as my teammates opened the door, and was making quite a few kills.  Took a lot of damage from time to time as demos lobbed in the grenades, but the dispenser kept me alive.  This went on for about 3 minutes, then my team got organized, massed, and rushed out.  The door opened, and I made 4 headshots in a row, with 4 rounds.  Lucky.  This allowed my team to capture the middle point, and rush to the enemy's point 2 (our point 4).  I ran over to the crates, ran down the enemy's ridge, and started sniping around the corner.  I quickly took out the enemy engineers trying to set up defensive positions, and then I took out their unfinished sentries.  My team was able to then push on with minimal resistance and quickly take their point 2.  I killed a couple more people up high and left coming over the narrow land bridge, waited about 30 seconds for my team to rush ahead, and then advanced my position to cover the long left hallway into the blockhouse.  I immediately saw a sniper hitting our guys, and a long, lucky shot from my weapon hit him in the head.

At this point I'm sort of excited, because I was in the zone, had a bunch of kills, hadn't died in a long time, and figured I was going to break my sniper damage record....

Then we got a scout on the last point, and we won the game.

I was still pleased waiting for the next round to see how many points I had...

24.  I had only tied my record, not broken it.  Sigh.

Also, nobody was whining about snipers that round, I can tell you.
