So are we excited yet?

Half Life guys making a co-op Zombie Apocalypse game.

Whats not to like?

Posted by Leisher on Oct. 31 2008,08:49
I am looking forward to it, yes.

However, I won't pick it up until:
-I see reviews.
-I know it doesn't come with SecureRom.
-I'm done with Saints Row 2.

Posted by Troy on Oct. 31 2008,09:03
Agree on the reviews.

But Secure-Rom? I mean, it's being made by Valve isn't it? If it had Secure Rom it would be like, Jesus punching you in the face, or something.

Ea doing is just like Satan damning your soul, it's just another day.

Yeah it won't have securerom since Steam is Valves securerom.

Last time I saw this game had pretty heafty minimum requirements which is what is keeping me away. Not sure if they were official or just what people were guessing since it has been awhile.

I don't know. I heard a few folks saying that EA published games had SecureRom even through Steam.

Yeah but those weren't developed by Valve. Valve has said that steam is their DRM/piracy protection and that they wouldn't use stuff like securom.

They can always change their mind but as of now Valve just uses steam to combat piracy.

Still, if EA is anywhere near the product it's best to be sure before you buy.

My PC isn't powerful enough to run the game plus I think I will wait until Episode III and this are packaged together. Maybe Portal 2 will be in there but I think that is wishful thinking.

After purchasing it a week or so ago, I finally got to fire up Left4Dead for about 10 minutes last night. I tried to do a quick single player run through as I was fitting this in before dinner.

Wow. This game has atmosphere up the ying-yang.

I didn't get to see much as the opening intro, which must be seen at least once, went for a few minutes, but what I did see left a pretty good impression.

I started off on top of an apartment building with three other survivors. We began to work our way down and immediately started encountering zombies. The normal zombies are brainless easy targets...until they spot you. That's when they rapidly become the zombies from 28 Days Later, IE: fast. They're so quick that it completely took me by surprise the first time one charged me. Really fast.

The big bads starting appearing right out of the gate. Within the first few minutes of gameplay, my team had already encountered a hunter, smoker, and boomer. This game does not ramp up the difficulty as you're already at the top.

My team played pretty well for AI, although they didn't really venture forth without me going first. They did stay in a nice diamond formation throughout.

The real star though was the sound. My team was constantly calling out status reports or saying what they hear around the next corner. The sounds of gunshots or a door crashing in followed by the groans of zombies has exactly the effect you would think. The best part in my few minutes was entering a really dark room and seeing a closed door with what sounded like a madwoman's cackle behind it. I assumed that a witch might reside inside and I immediately took my team the other direction.

So far, my impressions of the game are very positive. My only negative is that I have zero desire to play such an intimate multiplayer game with strangers. The team is only 4 people and I'd much rather succeed and fail with folks I know. I have TF2 for the strangers.

Posted by Malcolm on Feb. 26 2009,08:23
The witches are indeed bitches.  Light them up (literally, plenty of gas canisters around) & have everyone focus raining death on them.  Avoid them if possible.

The multiplayer seems painful if you don't have real teamwork.  If the survivors split up, they'll just get individually pinned or cornered by something.  If the zombies split up, the normal shambling Horde isn't enough to deter competent survivors.

This game is fucking awesome. I have no idea why more peeps here haven't purchased it yet so that we can all co-op through it, but if you're on the fence, go buy it.

Learn why you don't want to startle the witch.

I hate you.

Buy the fucking first one!!! It's phenomenal. I've been waiting for a few of you to pick it up so we can multi through it.

The highest difficulty level is way, way too hard to go through with AI partners.

You haven't lived until you're going through a L4D level and you hear a witch somewhere close.

I bought it for $25 when Catt posted in this chain that it was on sale.

It was a great purchase which I've been shouting from the mountain tops ever since.

With part 2 having been announced, I would imagine it'd be smart to keep your eyes on Steam for another discount soon. Remember that every weekend something is on sale there.

Valve lately has been piggy backing on the 360 show during E3 so I'm a bit disappointed that there wasn't any mention of portal 2 or Ep. 3. I was hoping for another box set with a bunch of stuff thrown in.

Yeah, I was bummed about that too, but I have theories about what they're doing.

The 360 thing is obvious, they're trying to cater to a larger market. Let's be honest, they've got the PC market locked up.

As for Portal 2, it is in development, so if they didn't show anything, then it's not ready.

As for Ep.3, there has been speculation that HL3 might pick up immediately where Ep. 3 ends. So, we might be waiting for two games, not just one. I think you'll see Ep. 3 shown off when HL3 is ready to be announced.

Just my two cents.

I highly, highly recommend that you start going through the campaigns first with the AI.

Learn the maps a bit, the weapons, healing, the monsters, the pacing, etc. Start at the easy levels.

Remember that the levels change every time in terms of where monsters, ammo, weapons, health, etc. are located.

Posted by Malcolm on Jun. 07 2009,19:45
Get used to using the crouch toggle & 180-spin controls.  Saved my ass multiple times.
Posted by GORDON on Jun. 08 2009,08:35
Went through the first chapter, or whatever it is called.

Am I not supposed to be able to save the game in the middle of a chapter?

I get only 1 or 2 weapons to carry around, right?  Seems like I used an automatic rifle until I burned through about 300 rounds, then changed to 2 hand guns.

Posted by Leisher on Jun. 08 2009,10:19
No saving period. That is an intentional design decision. If you die, you're dead until your teammates are dead or complete the campaign.

That's one of the reasons I told you to start on the easier difficulties. You will NOT beat a campaign on the highest difficulty level with AI teammates. It's impossible. Thus, you'd just be spinning your wheels and not learning anything about the game.

This truly is not the game to come into thinking "I'm an FPS master, I can beat this on the highest difficulty level."

Yeah, only 1 primary weapon. The pistol is your backup. You need to learn to conserve ammo. Think of it as "Your Precious". Head shots are key. Ditto for using the pistol when you can instead of the primary. Don't forget your physical attack either.

Posted by Leisher on Jun. 09 2009,08:18
In multi, it'd be you and me and two AI peeps unless other folks joined us.

The game doesn't change. We try to survive the campaign. The difference is that if one of us dies, that person gets to be one of the big bad zombies.

Posted by GORDON on Jun. 10 2009,21:17

I wasn't because it wasn't that type of game. For example, what's the storyline behind Team Fortress? There isn't one.

This type of game doesn't need a storyline. The storyline is to survive.

Now Dead Rising, that's a zombie game that needs a storyline.

Let's not go crazy.

Folks are pissed that L4D was supposed to have free content earlier on, and yes, Valve did promise it. However, they saw an opportunity to expand upon the franchise, and yes, make some money.

What an evil corporation!!! Maybe we should write Obama and have him punish them for trying to make money?

Seriously, this is the first such move they've ever made. I've got no problem with it, especially considering just how much they have given away for free for years. Even more so when you consider the buyout offers they've rejected (EA, etc.), which would have fucked everyone in the long run (You know how well know EA is for giving stuff away for free...). They need to stay profitable or they go away. If that means not everything is free, well duh. And those who think everything should be free are morons.

P.S. The new DLC is indeed a campaign.

Left for Dead 2 demo was in my uninstalled on steam yesterday, I installed it and then played it while waiting for Dragon Age to finish.

It was pretty fun. I didn't even realize what I was clicking and suddenly I was in the game with 3 of human players and then... the Zombies started coming. Didn't really stop after that. Wild and bloody, but pretty fun. I had trouble telling which were the special Zombies, except that huge guy that smashes into walls and stuff.

Pretty fun, might have to try it next month.

I was playing the demo last night.  Both solo and online.  It was kind of weak.  Granted, it's a demo, so content may be limited.  But, once you knew the path to the end and where the monsters spawned, it was easy.  Played on the harder levels too.  For those that have played the game (or the old one), what's the draw?  I seems like it would become repetative.

Yeah, the levels stay the same, but everything else about that statement is incorrect.

Not because of your perceptions Cake, but because they obviously stripped the demo version of some things.

What makes the game replayable, besides the fact that you're fighting zombies, is the fact that everything changes every time you play. All the ammo and guns change places, as do where the zombies spawn.

And trust me, the higher difficulty levels are a heart pounding nightmare.

I know you feel in respect with it, but I have no idea how you didn't fall in love with it. I was playing it again last night and will again tonight.

I know.  On paper, it all looks perfect.

Maybe my head just isn't in the right place, lately.

Hm. Didn't think to look if it was the PC or not, probably not.

Drat.

And in an act of supreme instant gratification and retarded financial sense, peer pressure has helped me buy this game tonight, with an entire night to play it, instead of waiting.

Oh well. At least I'll be killing zombies.

Oh man, Versus mode is greeeaaattt.

4x4, take turns playing Survivors/Special Infected. You go one round on each level of a campaign, and you get points as to how far the survivors get per level (it's almost impossible to finish without dying).

Infected spawn as a random zombie, but you get to go in ghost mode to choose where to spawn, which leads to coordinated ambushes.

I had noticed random bathrooms, and places in the regular game that seemed like were kind of useless, but it all makes sense in Versus mode. That's where the Zombies can choose to spawn and hit the survivors from all sides. Great fun.

I'll pick this up Friday when it's on sale for $30. I'm also going to trade in Batman: Arkham Asylum, so I should only pay $5.

I'm going to try and get that Crash Course 5k zombies killed achievement tonight before I move onto part 2.

Awesome ad for Mass Effect 2 at the start (at least when I viewed it).

I saw in the last PC Gamer that there's a Helm's Deep level available for L4D. I'm going to grab that tonight.

I've heard no army has ever breached the Deeping Wall.

Those deadite bastards are going to tonight, and I'll be there with my boom stick to repel them.

I know this is late.  But after having the game for a really long time, I finally started messing around with it today.  Played survivor mode.  It's ruined now.  I kept hitting 'Quick Match' and after 5 tries, I gave up.  Every server had cheats enabled where you took no damage.  Just kept going and going.  Or there was a mod building structures to hide in that the zombies couldn't get into.  Or there were mods playing as the zombies and could walk through walls and fly.  I had to start my own game and play with AI team mates.

Other than that, looking forward to doing the campaign co-oply.

I've found it's best to play with friends or bots.  Let me know when you're going and I'll hop on and coop with you.  Nice thing is friends of anyone in the room can join the room, so friends of friends end up hopping on as well and it can fill up nicely without too much trouble.

The real jewel of the game is regular versus mode.  Four versus four trading out zombies and survivors, and playing the zombies is more fun IMO.  But don't expect to finish every round; the zombies end up winning about half the time.  Again, though, much better with friends.

I'd love to go through either L4D or L4D2 in co-op mode. Let me know if we're planning this and I'll make sure I'm up to date on patches and such.

I'm game for doing this. I noticed they added a new level (s) to this, so there is content I haven't done yet.
Posted by Leisher on Mar. 22 2011,08:23
I would do both Left4Dead and Left4Dead2.

I haven't played the original in a while, so it'll seem like new content.

LOTS of achievements to grab that I don't have.

I'd be available weekend evenings after 9ish EST. (Once the rug rats are in bed.) Some weeknights if the wife doesn't want to watch something together.
