For those of you with great reflexes, play the scout or the pyro.

For those of you who want firepower, play the heavy or the soldier.

For those of you who like to play support classes, play the medic or engineer.

For those of you who like to be sneaky, play the spy.

For those of you who have a combination of reflexes and patience, play the demoman.

For those of you who don't like to be in the thick of things, play the sniper.

Engineer has some abilities that aren't intuitive, fyi.  My first time i had some teammates giving me tips once i let them know I was an engie virgin.

Personally, I switch between my fave classes

1.  As needed by the team
2.  As I feel like it.  The different classes, and thus different play styles, keep the game fresh(er).

Tips for those who suck at FPSs?
Posted by GORDON on Aug. 22 2008,11:10
Hope you aren't one of those dweebs who get motion sickness from a video game.

It's called a healthy inner ear... get one.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 22 2008,11:50
where did that come from?
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 22 2008,12:01
I switch a lot based on mood, map, and team as well. I think demoman is my least favorite, but I know it's a popular class, so don't go by my opinion on that one.

Engineer would be good as your job isn't really combat, but to support and defend (via the turret you build). People on your team will love you as long as you build them teleporters so they can get to battle faster.

Sniper is good as you're in the rear guard and zoomed in. The action there is click the mouse to shoot.

The spy wouldn't be horrible, but the learning curve is probably too high the first time you play.

The medic is decent as you're not really worried about fighting, but rather healing. Your job is to find a heavy, pyro, soldier, etc. and stay behind them while healing them constantly. Good for folks who aren't good with reflexes, but want to stay up front.

That's me.

I have seasickness tablets for when I plan to do some FPS gaming.

I still suck, though.

I'm trying out the spy this weekend, as it is my least played class.

It's been pretty fun so far.

Posted by Malcolm on Aug. 22 2008,23:38
Damn, I need a new desktop.  I'm almost looking forward to returning to work.

Servers are being patched... steam being signed up.

I hate it when people have already taken TheCatt.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,06:05
54 dl'ed... big game.
Posted by GORDON on Aug. 23 2008,08:15
Lots of awesome to fit through a mere cable modem.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 23 2008,08:54
Last night's game were great. The FNF server was loaded with regulars which meant good players filled both teams. The server was like that until around 2 when things started dying down. Hopefully, the trend will continue tonight.
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,09:33
i joined some newbie server.... then some dude complained about how much his team sucked.

yeah, cuz no one had been playing before that day cept him and a couple of other peeps.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,09:34
i tried:
medic
sniper
heavy
engineer

i sucked at all of them.

Posted by Troy on Aug. 23 2008,09:36
Try Soldier, probably the easiest,
Posted by GORDON on Aug. 23 2008,10:14
Like I said.
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,10:29
i've tried them all cept scout.

bah

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,10:44
heavy seems to be the most agreeable for me so far.
Posted by Troy on Aug. 23 2008,11:44
Must push little cart!
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,12:24
must get killed.  a lot.
Posted by GORDON on Aug. 23 2008,12:32
I never get killed.

I also just made about 25 headshots out of 50 rounds fired.

I was on fire.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,12:37
I'm not sure what my stats are, but I'm going to guess:
28 kills
49 assists
1,024,202 deaths

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 23 2008,12:38
What is your Steam ID?  I was just playing a server with Leisher, Troy, and TPR.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 23 2008,13:23
I'll be back on a bit later. Hopefully FNF will have some folks on by then or maybe we'll have to kick start it. We have enough people to do that.

The newbies this weekend are making things a bit interesting. It's tough when half your team has no idea what they're doing.

It is funny to see all the damn achievements though. Between the new people and the heavies I hear the crowd cheering every other second.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,13:30
billthecatt i think

recently overheard:
"hey medic, i need a heal"
"MEDIC OVER HERE"
"Eh, good luck, Catt just does his own thing"
"TURN AROUND CATT"

not my fault they were behind me.

Just added you.

As for the medic, the weapon you should be carrying 97% of the time is that healing nozzle, which means you should be behind the groups who need healing.

The first 45 minutes I played I was getting a little frustrated at the fact it is useless being a sniper when your teammates can't keep the bad guys off you.  I think I had ZERO kills the entire first round before I just said FUCK IT and went heavy and turned on the lawn mower.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 23 2008,14:07
As Gordon said, keep your heal gun equipped and firing most of the time. As your teammates are near you, and without stopping the heal of whomever you are healing, aim your cursor over them and if they are low, heal them...IF that's a good moment. If you're on the front lines and the heavy you're healing is getting shot, that's not a good time.

Also, once you get charged up all the way you can right click to make you and whomever you're healing invincible for 10 seconds. However, you must continue healing them and don't get out of range.

Other than that, if folks call for medic, they probably need healing. If they're on fire, they need healing (except Pyros, judge them by their health bar).

As for the newbs, I've been doing really well today, but this situation is perfect for pyros. Although, I did play a sniper on Badwater Basin and got the Grey Matter achievement.

I know, and that's what I was doing.

But I had died, and was running back to where I thought everyone was.  Apparently they had been pushed back.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,14:09
So why is healing a heeavy on the front line a ba time? (other than easy to be killed?)

i tried to learn what to do by dying an sitting out watching others, so i was just copying.... but they seeme to stay together the whole time.

Let me first clarify that you should be healing all the time. All the time. Even if someone isn't hurt, continue healing. This builds your uber, gets you points, and helps them once they do get shot.

Once you're on the front and healing someone, most medics stay with that person until they're dead or do something to threaten an uber you're holding or charging. That's an accepted thing. So peeps won't be looking for you to stop healing them. IF you're pushing forward or in a fire fight. If you're just standing around waiting for something, heal some folks.

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 23 2008,14:14
"Y" is to button to talk to everyone.
"U" is the button to talk to your teammates.

(Obviously, that's for typing.)

Once you get home, "V" is the button you hit to actually talk, but it usually only goes to your team.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,14:17
Yeah, I only know:
keyboard - wasd
mouse - wiggle it around, left click, alternate through weapons.

i clicked on "manual" when i loaded the game, an it was some BS that was like a real-life manual for some of the engineer weapons.  not a game manual.

That that's actually a server setting.  Every server I've been on, so far, has had it set so voice chat only chats to your team.

The other keys that are important are:
E = Calls for medic
R = Reloads your weapon
Q = Switches between your last two weapons.
CTRL = Crouches
SPACE = jumps
F5 = Takes a screenshot

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,14:36
is there a run? or just one speed?
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 23 2008,14:41
One speed based on your class.

Actually, I take that back. You can speed up or slow down certain guys via weapons.

For example, the heavy moves faster with a shotgun, then if he's carrying the minigun. He can also slow way down by carrying the minigun and then spinning its barrels.

Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 23 2008,15:21
I suck a LOT.  Leisher and Gordo can attest to that.

So far I think I like the Scout, Engineer, and Sniper the best.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,15:28

fuckers.

It just takes time to get used to the maps and know what you're doing.

People go there because those servers are busy a lot. The problem, like you're pointing out, is that they have an unfair advantage.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 23 2008,16:46
Yeah, these people CLEARLY know the maps and what they are suppose to be doing, but the server as clearly says "newbie" server.

bah.

We need a cool screenshot thread.

After this weekend, it'd be a few pics of me stabbing some big ol bacon in the back.

I got my payback.

I also felt bad about dominating TPR.

Posted by Troy on Aug. 23 2008,21:26
I had that feeling as a spy, when I come around a corner cloaked, or disguised as something that obviously shouldn't be moving back into base, and run right into a pyro or heavy... and a second later they figure out that thing in front of them isn't a friendly and i'm uber boned.

I got blocked on the OMGWTFBBQ achievement this weekend...so far. I had one almost complete, but got backstabbed right before my pyro shot the fire out of his hands.

I'm not sure why you spent all weekend on a newbie server and working on achievements.

That's like trying to find out if you like driving by sitting in a L.A. traffic jam.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 24 2008,12:30
Achievements aren't the point of the game.

The point of the game is to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to ignore the lamentations of your wife because you wont do housework.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 24 2008,13:57
Apparently I have a "guest pass" if anyone wants to keep playing while waiting for their Orange Box.  Expires 9/20.  No idea how long the pass lasts.
Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 24 2008,14:11
If no one else wants it I'd like it, but my Orange Box should be here by next weekend, and I doubt I'll play much during the week.  So if anyone else wants it they should take it instead.

Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 24 2008,14:34
I spent 20 minutes on the achievement server, for the record.  It was boring.  Figured maybe I could get one of the new weapons.  is that not how that works?

as for the newbie server, so I could figure out what the characters do.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 24 2008,14:36
What is a 'newbie server,' anyway?  Is it all nerfed and stuff?
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 24 2008,14:40
I think the idea is that NEW players go there to learn the ropes.

Instead, a few new people join, and teams get unbalanced as all the experienced people join up together and blow the shit out of them.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 24 2008,14:46
Well screw that.  If you don't already hate the game, just go to the FNF server, or whatever.  They were cool with me when I announced I was a newb.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 24 2008,15:07
The FNF server is where you should be. Just admit you're new and people will help you out. Just don't curse as they quickly ban. It keeps the kiddies out.

Also, ignore the new weapons. You don't need them.

I've got 50 hours in as a pyro and I do NOT use the upgraded flamethrower. Nor do I use the upgraded ax. The flare gun is cool, but it is equally as valuable as the shotgun. I go back and forth between them.

Just play the game and the achievements, and new weapons, will come.

Posted by Troy on Aug. 24 2008,16:06
Yeah the only upgraded weapon i use is the flare gun, but I also find myself in the water all the day and wishing I had a shotgun.

Additionally, current owners of TF2 should have received a notice that they have a few guest passes to distribute to friends and family. You can either send those off immediately and let your friends have a one day head start on the free weekend, or wait until after the weekend to distribute them. It's your call.

Seems to imply more people should have them.  I'll go 2nd in line behind TPR if anyone does.  Yall can show me what it's really like

Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 24 2008,16:30

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 25 2008,10:19
Well, let me know when.  If it only lasts 3 days, I should transfer it when you have 3 days to play.

If that's how it works.

I dunno.

Dunno.  I figured it's a give, and then someone activates it whenever.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 25 2008,11:35
I would assume it's three consecutive days. So as soon as you activate, it'll expire soon after. Just plan for an upcoming weekend after labor day.

You know Gordo and I will be playing. Judging by this last weekend I'd assume TPR and Troy will join us. Cake and his crew might be there based on the tides or where the moon is in the sky or whatever.
