So the Medics and Pyros have been updated and now, much to Gordon's delight, it's the heavy's turn.

< The TF2 Blog > implies that we'll see it next week or so.

It will contain, three new weapons for the Heavy, 35 achievements for the Heavy, a new game mode, 5 maps for that new game mode, a new payload map, and "cp_steel" which is a tremendously popular user created map that was apparently voted in by the suggestions they received.

So I guess in one week, everyone and their brother is going to be a heavy. Seems like that might be a great time to work on my Medic achievements.

I was at the local amusement park today, pushing the kid around in his stroller.

Suddenly, I cried out, "I must push little cart!" in a russian accent.

Next Tuesday has been announced as the Heavy update release date.

I'm really curious about the new play mode.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 12 2008,21:47
I did the "I must push little cart!" several times through the day as I pushed the kid in his stroller, but no one ever recognized it.

You know what it means, don't you?

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 12 2008,22:09
I assume you're simply referring to the payload maps.
Posted by GORDON on Aug. 13 2008,05:27
Yeah, and the spontaneous chatter from the Heavy class during that map, along with, "Little cart will not push itself!" is, "I must push little cart!"

In a slight russian accent.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 13 2008,05:58
I must poosh leetle CART!  Except I was at an amusement park pushing my kid's stroller.

Wow, that.... sucks.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 13 2008,13:01
Yeah, I thought the same thing.

Although, have you earned any of the new weapons? That's what they are...a mixed bag.

Here's what the pyro gets:
Shotgun OR flare gun -
The shotgun can kill people, but can't set them on fire and has no range. Meanwhile, the flare gun can set people on fire forcing them to seek health, and has a lot of range, but rarely has enough to kill someone.

Ax OR Fire ax -
The ax is the ax and works like all other melee weapons. The fire ax has barbed wire around it and hits for critical damage 100% of the time...if the person is on fire. If they're not, it hits for 50% less than what the normal ax would hit for.

Flamethrower vs. Backburner-
The flamethrower is the standard weapon and has a kick ass feature in the airblast. The airblast can be used to move demo bombs, shoot rockets back at soldiers, and shoot opposing players into the air which is great against ubers. The backburner gets 100% criticals but only if you hit a person in the back, however it does not have the airburst ability.

I actually carry the regular ax and regular flamethrower. The flare gun, however, is pretty awesome, particularly for team thinking folks. I mean, you won't get kills with it, but you'll drive away opposing players and/or weaken them for teammates.

< Badwater Basin > is the new payload map.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 15 2008,12:08
< Natasha. >

That's weapon number 2, so the final weapon will be an alternative for the shotgun. Interesting that they're saving that one for last.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 15 2008,13:52
I don't think I like that new chaingun, either.  The Heavy is supposed to be a slow, damage-dealing tank.  With that weapon the Heavy is a slow, less-damage-dealing... tank.  The "slow down your targets" thing will need to be pretty drastic for that to be worth it.
Posted by Leisher on Aug. 15 2008,19:02
You know you can switch weapons between deaths right?

So if a certain scout was giving you fits by circle strafing, you drop Sasha, pick up Natasha, and cut him down.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 15 2008,19:13
Nope, did not know that.
Posted by WSGrundy on Aug. 17 2008,10:16
Looks like it might not be all desert and abandoned building looking maps anymore. Looks like wood in the background of the picture and Valve has said new environments are on their way.

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 18 2008,22:03
WSGrundy, look Gordon and I up on Steam, we're on most nights.

One of the guys at FNF came across this image predicting what the servers will be like tomorrow when the update hits:

And the new game play mode? < TF2 Arena. > Not your normal death match. Looks interesting, but I'll need to see it in action. If you only get one life, it might suck to spawn and get immediately snipped. If you get multiple lives, the spawn timer will become a huge deal.

Interesting that they still haven't named the third weapon. That's the last thing, but why wait until the day the update is being released before announcing it? It'll be a replacement for the shotgun, obviously, but will it be as good as the Pyro's flare gun?

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 19 2008,13:29
< Meet the Sandvich! >

That's an interesting little twist there. Give up the shotgun for the sandwich, but you're vulnerable for 4 seconds while you eat. I like the concept. It's negative where it should be, but positive in terms of helping the heavy who is slow and too reliant on medics to heal him.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 19 2008,13:46
There's a website that has been making fun of the idea for a sandwich for the heavy, in a "so absurd it could never happen" sort of way for weeks, now.

I saw a fantastic quote once that addresses such comments or lines of thinking. It went something like, "Yes, let's focus on realism in a game where two factions at war with one another build identical bases three feet apart."

Go give the developer's commentary a listen sometime. They talk about how the first TF2 was very realistic, but wasn't fun. Thus, they threw out realism in favor of this new "cartoony" style and it worked.

A sandvich works in this game, but obviously wouldn't work in a realistic shooter.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 20 2008,07:00
Have you watched the "Meet the...." series of video clips?  Frikkin hilarious, and they even have one for the Sandvitch.  "Oh my god, you just punched all of my blood out."

The best moment of brilliance though is the small grin the engineer gets when his sentry shoots rockets for the first time.

But every vid is of outstanding quality.

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 20 2008,07:13
I've only seen a couple, but they are great.

You made me go watch the sandvich one and that is hilarious. I love the "he punched out all my blood" and the soldier chewing the heavy out for not properly breaking his spine.

Now I've got to watch them all.

Hey guys, let me answer for you:

Leisher, it's because they are slack-jawed faggots and they are intimidated by us sexual tyrannosaurs.

Posted by Leisher on Aug. 20 2008,12:22
Remember Cakedaddy and all the trash he talked about us not multiing? Remember how he would be particularly harsh on me and how I play lots of solo games?

Where has he been? How come we keep seeing him online in the forums, but he never talks and we don't see him or the handful of peeps he brought the one night on TF2 anymore?

Maybe he's embarrassed at the way my pyro kept setting him on fire.

Aside from Wednesdays when I'm golfing and drinking, I'm on every night. Where is he?

I'm telling you, go watch the commentary tracks tonight. They reveal a lot of cool things, like the various animations your characters do based on what's going on around them.

I still get a kick out of the damn thumbs up.

They need to keep making more of those videos.

Troy, look Gordon and I up next time you're playing. We're usually on nightly.

I'm like you and usually play Pyro and Medic. Gordo plays Heavy, Medic, and Sniper.

TPR, not sure what your hang up is about Steam, but Cakedaddy was the biggest anti-Steam guy on the planet and if he can adapt and use it (once a year apparently) then you can too.

As for the videos, I agree. They simply can't make enough of them.

So far, without farming, I have 6 Heavy achievements.  The "shoot $200,000 worth of ammo" one was easy... an engie set up a dispenser near a choke point, so I just stood there firing continuoulsy for about 4 minutes.

Also got Rasputin, which I mentioned.
Take 1k damage in a single life.
Kill 10 peeps in midair with ol' Painless
5 second teleport kill
and Vanguard Party, where you are the first peep on a control point

So yeah.

I will be on tonight after the rug rat is in bed.

Gordo, if you're on, go red for the backwater basin map and go heavy. I'll be your medic for the round. (Pyros kind of suck on that map.)

When on defense, for the opening of that map I love the Sniper.  There are some good spots to just wreak havoc on people as they leave the spawn gates.

After (if) they take the first checkpoint the Heavy is good, though.

When I pay for a game, I like to know that I'll be able to play it again in twenty years.  I don't mind digital distribution - I always burn a copy for later - but can anyone guarantee that Steam will still be around in twenty years to verify my copy?  Are there any promises that they won't suddenly decide for some arbitrary reason to deny me access to my software?

I don't trust it.  If it has to call in to the home office every time I use it, I'm not interested.

EDIT: Well, unless it's dirt cheap.  When it gets down to the price of a DVD rental then I'll try it without such considerations.  But as long as it's the price of a box set of DVDs, I want some assurances that Steam so far can't provide.

Posted by Troy on Aug. 21 2008,11:46
The only games I usually play on steam are online, so require steam to play them as its the matchmaker...  but then I decided I wanted to play Call of Duty 2 (single player WW2) , and bought it,  and it was good.

Then time warner fucked up my internet the next day.

Didn't have any trouble when it told me it couldn't connect to the steam server(internet fucked) and that I had the option of starting in offline mode instead.

So I did, and played Call of Duty to my hearts content for a few days until time warner fixed me internet woes.

I got the game downloaded in under an hour btw, and it was very cheap.

If you can find the Orange Box for sub $20, that is dirt cheap for everything that is in it.  I was right about their strategy... i snagged the OB at 20 because I started seeing the individual games in the OB on sale for $20 each.  Not sure what the price of the OB is doing now.

If you bought the individual games on the shelf today at Best Buy, they would cost....

about $110.

Half Life 2 - $30
HL2: Episode 1 - $20
HL2:Ep2 - $20
Team Fortress 2 - $20
Portal - $20

< $28.99 > - A price I still believe is an absolute steal.

Keep in mind that HL2 is easily considered the best shooter ever. HL2:Ep1 and HL2:Ep2 are the exact same gameplay and storyline, with new enemies, weapons, locations, and one of the best "end boss" scenes I've ever seen. I'd go so far as to say that Valve is telling the best story ever told via a series of video games.

Portal is considered by many to be the greatest game ever made despite it only being 4 hours long. I've haven't heard hype like this in a long time and was shocked when it actually lived up to it.

TF2 is considered the best multi shooter on the market.

The Orange Box at the original retail price of $50 or whatever was a steal, let alone it being in the $20 to $30 range. That's why EA (the publisher) forced the move from the Orange Box to individual boxed copies of each game. A smart move to make some quick coin, but a long term bad move. They should've just accepted that they could've charged more and instead further marketed the hell out of the orange box. Subsequent sequels to all the games included would've sold that much better.

This has all been covered before. There is no guarantee Steam will be around 20 years from now despite it being the #1 online distribution service. In fact, there is no guarantee that YOU will be around 20 years from now or the Earth itself. Valve has a guarantee posted somewhere (it might be with every game and on their site) specifying that if Steam ends, they will send out an update with codes releasing every game from it's obligation of needing the Steam servers.

So my advice to you is live in the now.

In terms of single player games, it doesn't "call home" every time you launch. It does for multi games, but since it's the matchmaking service and the update server, that's to be expected.

Posted by GORDON on Aug. 21 2008,12:25
Plus I like it for the fact it has a built-in Instant Messenger service, that is usable from within the game.  I don't use any IM programs any more, so it has made having a friend list easy, again.  Just don't ever expect to see Cakedaddy online.

As for a Steam Con:  I read recently that early in Steam's life there was a 3-day power outtage in... Seattle (?) that knocked Steam offline for several days.  So, you know, in case of tsunami we'd not only have tens of thousand dead liberals, but we'd also possibly be off of TF2 for a while.  So that would suck.

But really TRP, I'd say *I* was the biggest Steam opponent here, but I'm now sold on it.  I feel I am getting far more product than the price would suggest, even if it may not be around forever.

Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 21 2008,19:44
Okay, I've ordered The Orange Box.  The fact that it doesn't call in every time you start it up makes it a bit more acceptable, and for $22 it's worth the risk.

Oh, and while I've never used Steam I have played through Portal.  It is indeed very awesome.

I really want a pyro video, but I think it should be all subtitles. I don't want to see his face or hear his actual voice.

In fact, it'd be funny if through the video, the subtitles worked like they should until he gets to killing a bunch of folks and starts yelling stuff. Then the subtitle should be "???".
