Anyone have one of these? What games are good for it?I was thinking of getting one now that they support DIVX/XVID as a media streamer, since it can also stream HDTV. Was thinking some games might be nice as well. Is there any point in the Elite version and it's 120GB HD? Or is the one with the 20GB good enough? Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 14 2007,18:46
Overlord seemed pretty fun.

I've read lots of complaints about MS only putting 20GB HDs in the lower end system but unless you keep everything you have ever downloaded or want to use the movie/TV service I don't see it being a problem. As for games I am interested in Mass Effect Beatufil Katamari and Settler of Catan, Geometry Wars, and Carcasonne from Xbox Live. Blue Dragon Eternal Sonata Other games that get some good press but I am not really interested in are Assasins Creed Puzzle Quest Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 14 2007,21:01
Avoid Gears of War, at least in co-op unless you got a really, really big TV.

Mass Effect should be awesome. The Halo series is good, not as good as the hype, but worth playing. Dead Rising was phenomenal. Best zombie game ever. (Only the clock kept it from being perfect.) GTA IV hits in Feb or March. Posted by WSGrundy on Dec. 15 2007,13:52
I don't know if they are still doing it or not but the lower priced 360's didn't have wireless controllers if that is an issue.

Mass Effect is really good. Assassin's Creed is impressive, though somewhat repetative. But awesome enough that I don't mind so much.Gears is good. Legos Star Wars II was surprisingly fun. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 15 2007,16:54
Gears of War needs to drop that POS over-the-shoulder view. Feels like you're a media correspondent or something.

Wireless controllers is a definite want to have, since we're gong to have little kids running around. What is the online like on these games or XBox in general? Does it require buying something extra? Do most games have it? Is it like servers with up to 10 players or 20 or whatnot? Or some large centralized thing? Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 15 2007,17:51

Either make the object of the game to shoot shit or take pictures of other people shooting shit. Don't split the difference. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 15 2007,17:55

You throw in the disk & there's usually an "XBox Live" option or something in the menu. Select it & it attempts to dial you to the appropriate servers (fuck knows who maintains them or how) for the software. When I was doing the Halo 2 thing on Live, it'd let you search for games or set up your own. In Halo 2, I was typically playing w\ another 10 or so folk in total, maybe less sometimes. Some filtering is automatic. Like if you're rated at a 3, you can't go jump in a game w\ a 9 & vice versa. As you can imagine, that system ain't perfect. EDIT : If you wanna know how the crowd on Live is in general, PVP Online did a bit a couple months ago in which the crew trains for a Halo XBox Live match. The stereotypes are disturbingly accurate. Yeah, you get a Silver Live account for free. There's a gold, but I'm not sure what you get out of that. I haven't done anything on-line since I got the 360. Did a little with the original Xbox. One of the things I actually like about the way they have Live set up is that you buy a chunk of "points" and you can use them for anything. I have a Zune and download a song now and again. Or I can use the points to watch a movie (done that a couple of times). They have expansion packs available for some games as well. Just thought that was kind of well done. Posted by WSGrundy on Dec. 16 2007,08:25
Last I read was that you need a gold account to play online games. If you use the free silver you get access to the marketplace, demos, updates(fixes), new content, and you can make a gamertag. You will need gold in order to play against anyone online. I think they may open up some games for a free weekend to try to lure new customers. There has been some talk from MS people about making playing games online free to keep up with free PS3 and Wii games. They would only allow gold members to create games and set up deicated servers for them to play on with no waiting and stuff like that and then either let the silver members only join games or only be able to play on a limited number of servers. I remember in the PC mags reading that XBox peeps would need Gold in order to play cross platform with PC peeps, and vice versa. I *think* Silver can play online against their own platform..............?I just remember the PC mags all claiming that microsoft was insane for thinking people would pay for the luxury of doing what they've always done for free (no counting cross-platform, and besides, PC gamers all consider platform gamers their beloved retarded cousins). I find it difficult to believe that the populous at large doesn't think of consoles in the same way they think of PCs. Retarded, small, watered-down PCs, but PCs nonetheless.

It could work that way on the PC I don't keep up enough with those games to remember but I'm pretty sure Shadowrun PC players need gold to cross platform. With so many choices I'm suprised LIVE gets the business it does. I could see it being successful if the only alternative was the shit online Nintendo offers but with the PS3/PC having the same things for free I don't get it. I think if the PS3 continues the good gains it has had the last couple of months then LIVE my have to change. Posted by Leisher on Dec. 16 2007,20:45
Shadowrun for the PC was not a success in terms of sales. One thing that killed it out of the gate was the admission by the developers that they handicapped the game to give console players a chance. They had the game help aim for the console players so compensate for the skill of the keyboard and mouse players. I don't get LIVE at all and I think Microsoft was showing either complete arrogance or ignorance when they thought that business model would translate to PC users. The 360 is a good purchase Catt if you're: -Looking to play sports games. -Want to play some big name games that won't hit PC or will a year or two after the initial 360 release (Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Halo Series, etc.) -Like the HD-DVD format. I always thought the concept behind Live was to try to shore up more exclusive content from game developers. They way I understand it, the individual game makers have to provide the infrastructure for their on-line games on the PS platform. By using Live, Microsoft takes on that burden. So it'd make game developers more likely to develop exclusively for Xbox since they don't have to deal with that overhead. Or at least give them incentive NOT to develop exclusively for Sony. That was only a theory, though. Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 26 2007,11:11
Bought an X Box 360 Premium with Marvel and Forza... So my wife really likes RPG games like the Star Wars KOTOR ones. What games are like that for the 360? Posted by Leisher on Dec. 26 2007,11:52
Mass Effect

Damn. Meant to mention that I'll be ebaying a NIB 360. Bought it for the kid for xmas, then dicided not to give it to him. He doesn't play the consoles he's got, so didn't make sense to add to the pile. All he plays is Guitar Hero. But it went on sale and we bought it at a good price before giving it alot of thought. We were just used to always buying him a console (have for years now). Hoping to be able to return it, but we've had it for about 2.5 months now. Anyway, never mind!SIDE NOT: I've always thought it was "use to", but decided to look it up. Correct spelling is "used to". So, now I know. Posted by TheCatt on Dec. 26 2007,15:01
Ah well, the price I got it at looked good ($280), so I went for it. (That's a good price, no?)Which one do you have? A friend of mine is also looking into getting a 360. Posted by Vince on Dec. 26 2007,15:53

So... I can only play online with people if I pay $50/year for Live Gold? Yet Wii and PS3 allow online play for free?

I haven't seen any online Wii play yet, just Mii sharing. What game on the Wii have you done online play with? Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 13 2008,06:54
I haven't done it, but I know that Mario Strikers Charged supports it.
