< Yet another MOBA >, but this time from Blizzard/Activision.

I've been meaning to do a write up on this game for sometime now and I guess I've got some time here at work to do it this morning.  I'll keep it short though as I don't believe anyone here would be interested in this game as its a MOBA, but a lot different that League.

Somehow I got started playing Blizzard games lately.  Started with Hearthstone (which I still rather enjoy and play just about everyday) and then this game got released and I figured I'd try it out.  Didn't think I would get into it because of all the time I put into playing LOL over the past few years.  But to my surprise it has kept me coming back.  It takes a lot of the things that were really a downer with League and makes its fun.

-First off.  There are 7 maps for the game, this makes each game different and fun.  Each map has different objectives that change the way the game is played.  One map the has a few treasure chests that are available throughout the game.  You're team runs to the chests and gets the gold from them (obviously team fights happen at these chests)  then you turn that gold in at the Pirate in the middle of the map.  When your team turns in the right amount of gold the pirate turns his cannons on the opposing teams towers.  This is just one of the many maps and each one has a unique set of circumstances and goals that each team want to achieve.

-No last hitting!! yep, you don't have to try and last hit a minion for personal gold.  This leads to a lot less grieving from people.  You don't have AD's that get pissed because a support just stole a minion.  The same goes for kills, the game doesn't even keep track of who got the kills, just how many the team has.  So you don't have to worry about feeding the carry or stealing a kill and pissing someone off.

-No items! This may sound like a negative, but I think its a plus.  Instead of items to buy and the need to know how to build your champ you have talents.  What this means is that every few levels you get to chose from one of 4 talents to augment your build.  These may be something like having a skill shot that has an increased distance or a uses less mana.  To something crazy like increased damage to towers or bribing merc camps to help come along and push lanes.  This makes the game a lot easier and gives each champ a lot of different build options.  Also each champ has 2 ults you can choose from, so this really makes things fun and the ability to change on the fly depending on how the game is going.

-Short games!  maybe my favorite part of the game.  LOL games average about 40-45 minutes and sometimes go on for an hour.  This game, 15-20 minutes.  The longest game I've had only went 30 minutes.  I love that I don't have to commit to a game for that long, especially one that you can't pause and walk away from.

-no long laning phase.  Since there is no need to last hit and map objectives come online early in the game.  big team fights can happen literally a minute into the game.  you have access to all of your abilities (except your ult) from the very beginning of the game so you're not hampered with just one ability until you hit the appropriate level.  The long laning phase is gone and team fighting is promoted.

-teamfights are fun as hell! League has great teamfights too, but they are literally over in like 5 seconds.  In Heroes, the team fights can go on for quite a long time.  I attribute this to two things.  One, a support can actually support.  You can literally pull of legendary life saving burst heals that can make a dude that's about to be gone be right back in the fight.  Playing support is fun and people like to play it and no one will flame you if you get a kill.  Two, your team shares experience.  So you don't have one guy that's level 15 and shredding everyone in his path, and a support that's level 8.  Your team is always at the same level, now one team can get a level or two ahead of the other team giving them an advantage.  But in general this keeps the game close and teamfights pretty even.  Comebacks in the game are not that uncommon and you don't have to worry about the game being over 5 minutes into a 45 minute game because some carry just got 2 early kills.

This post wasn't to bash on LOL because I don't want anyone to think that, especially Gordo.  I know he still plays and I still love that game, but this game has taken its place for me.  League is a deeper game and prolly a higher skill cap and is much more polished.  But this game is much more user friendly and less stressful in many ways.  Prolly the reason Gordo (and I for that matter) started playing ARAM.  it takes away from the bullshit that comes along with Summoners Rift.  Maybe MOBAs aren't for you, but if you are open to them I suggest giving the game a shot.

< Hearthstone >

I started a topic on that game quite a while back.  I'll be happy to friend you.  My Battle.net name is MadMordigan#1329.

But Hearthstone is much more of a single player game to me.  Even though you can play your friends in PvP matches you can't get your dailies from them.  I usually just log in to play my dailies and get gold for packs of cards.

It is nice to have friends when you get the "spectate a friend win" daily.  Its good for a free pack of cards.  Whats your Battle.net tag?

That makes me wonder about the other 1328 MadMordigans.

LOL! yeah, we're taking over the world!!

Actually, Blizzard gives everyone a number after their name.  It doesn't show up in any games, but you need to know this number if you want to friend someone.  I'm assuming so you can be whatever name you want.  Its pretty stupid if you ask me.

Same here.  Except I spend the gold on the Arena instead of buying packs directly.  It means the potential cost is 50% higher per pack, but there's a gamble on getting more from a good run.
