QUOTE
Cage asked us to consider black-and-white silent films. Their images were indistinct, (Heavy Rain creator David) Cage noted, and the actors had to exaggerate their actions.
...
On the big screen behind Cage, he illustrated his points with scenes from Edwin Porter’s 1903 silent film The Great Train Robbery...

I kind of get what he's trying to say, but he almost couldn't have picked a worse film with which to make this point.  Every time you've seen an action flick where < the shot focuses in on a dude shooting a gun into the camera view >, that's ripped off from this movie.  The author picks up on this as well.

QUOTE
...it crystallized the deepest fallacy of the whole affair—the idea that creativity needs to be free of limitations

The dude who made Braid chimes in before Cage.

The PS4 doesn’t even exist, won’t until the end of the year, and it already makes PS3 games look obsolete ... It takes some balls to come out and tell the world “all our latest and most-advertised games will be useless soon!” It also takes some balls to be caught having sex with a casserole – not everything driven by balls is good, and now no-one wants anything you’ve made.

It's a defensive measure against the Wii.  Announce what's coming soon so that people don't bother with the Wii U
Posted by Malcolm on Mar. 06 2013,17:12
The Wii U has been kicking enough ass to warrant a counteroffensive?
Posted by GORDON on Mar. 06 2013,17:40
I haven't heard any hype about the Wii U since launch.  Even my own kid doesn't do much with it... and when he does, he just plays on the game pad like it was an oversize Nintendo DS.  Doesn't even have the TV turned on.

I stick with my earlier assessment: for the most part, it is still a generation behind the PS3.  The only thing new it brought to the table was the gamepad/video controller.   It is otherwise limited and restrictive.

Posted by TheCatt on Mar. 06 2013,18:32
Sounds like Wii U started ok, then faded quickly.
QUOTE
As of 31 December 2012, Nintendo reports 3.06 million units have been sold.[2] In comparison, Microsoft sold 600,000 of their Xbox 360s from its November launch to the second week in January and Sony sold one million PlayStation 3 units in its first six weeks[122].
In January 2013, the Wii U sold 57,000 units in the US. [123] By comparison, the original Wii sold 435,000 in January 2007, also 2 months after launch.[124] Initial sales numbers in the US and other territories were lower than expected, resulting in Nintendo cutting sales projections for FY 2013 by 17 percent, from 5.5 million to 4 million.[125] This has left critics questioning the future of Nintendo, describing the Wii U as being in "trouble" and potentially moving away from the hardware sector

< One guy thinks the PS4 will outperform the PC for years... >

In a way, he's right because PCs don't have a standard build. However, for folks who trick out their PCs, he's very wrong.

I found this tidbit elsewhere:
QUOTE
Gaming analyst Michael Pachter predicts PS4 and Xbox 720 games could cost $70.

Yeah! Sign me up for that! I hate spending less for games on the PC where they look better, sound better, are more customizable, and have mods.

A different perspective:

< Richard Garriott thinks consoles' days are numbered. >

He makes a strong argument...

“When you buy a new console, it means you have to unwire something from your living room stereo, and wire something new in. And generally, with console games you sit on the couch in the living room with the TV across the room, versus sitting at a desk with the screen right in front of your face.

Yeah, because doing the initial setup for a PC or internet-capable TV is going to be easier.  As far as the viewing surface, I'd gladly take a TV-like screen over the monitor for purposes of BL2, for instance.  The problem is keeping things that pretty at that resolution at that speed is not simple.

Posted by WSGrundy on Mar. 13 2013,10:39
So he is arguing that sitting on your couch playing on a TV is a worse experience?
Posted by Malcolm on Mar. 13 2013,10:53
For online gaming, he's arguing for the standard PC setup.  When there are others physically present, the TV setup becomes more desirable.  That's a puzzling spot to draw a line because there's obviously some overlap.
Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 18 2013,08:03
I expect to see high-end consoles start to trail off and be cancelled.  The future of consoles is in the more < friendly and cheaper > experiences. After all, it doesn't take a high-end machine to render the sorts of fun party games that best fit the group console experience.
Posted by Leisher on Mar. 18 2013,09:32
If mainstream consumers had a clue how to use their PCs, consoles would already be a thing of the past.
Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 18 2013,10:27
That's mostly an old person problem.  As they keep getting older, it will be less of a problem.
Posted by Leisher on Mar. 18 2013,10:49
I disagree.

I think there's an inherent laziness with consoles that people enjoy.

I can install this on my PC after DLing it for a while, then patch it, then deal with hooking up different controllers and dealing with the settings, or I can just plug and play on my TV.

I prefer the first option, as does everyone here, but the mainstream prefers the second, and imho, always will.

Think of all the people who still couldn't change their own tire if it went flat.

< Sony > may have intentionally dropped the PS4 camera just to beat MS on price.  Whoever decided to do that deserves a raise.

< PS4 won't stream your media.  XBOne will >
Posted by GORDON on Nov. 02 2013,08:06
Interesting.  I wonder what the equivalent of that on the PS3 is... on the PS3 I have "PS3 Media Server" application running on my server, and it feeds media to my PS3.  Great when you have a file that PS3 can't natively real... the PS3MS will transcode it on the fly.

As long as the PS4 has the same functionality, I will buy one in about 18 months when the price drops by $50.

Oh snap.  Who built them... Foxconn, perhaps?  Think Microsoft sabotaged manufacturing?  A few $100 bribes would buy a lot of quality control managers over there.
Posted by Leisher on Nov. 15 2013,19:11
Ouch.

Microsoft execs have to reading those and furiously masturbating.

Posted by TheCatt on Nov. 16 2013,06:23
Well, was still able to buy 4 on Amazon last night and sell them all on eBay overnight!
Posted by GORDON on Nov. 16 2013,10:37
I like to think peeps know the difference between Microsoft saying XBOX ONE WILL BE ALWAYS CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET AND YOU WILL LIKE IT AND ALSO FUCK YOUR MOTHER and Sony having some trouble with their manufacturer's quality control.

Well, that would be one way to get attention to poor working conditions.

I'd say it's more likely the disgruntled workers slacked on the assembly line as opposed to a competitor investing in corporate espionage.  Occam's Razor.

Hey, you only have to pay them slightly above the normal shitty wage.  Good to know executive greed is universal.

Apple loves their Foxconn slave labor, for example.

For all the words, I don't feel like he actually said much.
Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 18 2013,14:30
That's pretty much standard for Tycho, yes.  He paints pretty pictures with words, but they are often fairy structures devoid of any heft.

Won't be getting a PS4 until the price is AT LEAST $50 less.
Posted by Leisher on Nov. 25 2013,10:18
I'll wait until GTA 6, see if 5 ever came out for the PC and if it didn't, I'll see if the $200 in my Amazon account will cover the price of one of these consoles.

Yes? I'll get one.

No? I don't need them. I have a PC.
