< 6 times as powerful as the 360. >

If you haven't heard, the rumor is that all the next gen consoles will hit by Christmas of this year.

Throw in Windows 8, and it's going to be an interesting year for gaming. Speaking of W8, if its claimed features are true, releasing the 720 at the same time makes a lot of sense.

May not play used games.

Guess it'll be time to upgrade my PC to play games, and tell MS to fuck itself if that's true.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Jan. 26 2012,12:23
How come you say this Christmas, but the article says fall of next year?  Which is it?  Huh?
Posted by GORDON on Jan. 26 2012,12:33
I have been avoiding used games for a while, assuming I would ultimately have DRM headaches when they require online activation.
Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 26 2012,12:37
I've been using a lot of used games.  Most of my XBox 360 games are used, as a matter of fact.

Actually, part of Windows 8 is that your PC, tablet, phone, and X-Box are all going to get along really well...

Because rumors from other sources say all consoles could possibly hit this year.

< Looks more and more like it's going to be true. >

Microsoft has a history of simply not understanding gaming. That will continue.

I've owned just about every console that's ever come out. I cannot imagine a scenario where I buy an "always on" console.

That last answer is practically a lesson in customer interaction.

The wife says, "Our kid wants an XBox because that is what his friends have and he wants to play online with them."

I replied, "This is a Playstation house."

$50 there's an Xbox in your house by end of year.

Yeah.  No bet.  I've already said no twice, but I'm sure it will come up again.

I remember the days when there would be NO console in his house.  His kid was going to have a 10 speed instead.

Tell me more.

Right now his kid has more consoles than I do.

And I bet no 10 speed.

Report: Xbox 720 powered by AMD x86 chip; means Xbox 360 discs will NOT be compatible.

Just saw this on a Game News site's feed.

No backwards compatibility.
Always On.

I wonder if the 720 will also randomly shout insults about your mother?

Seriously Microsoft, are you taking tips from EA? Way to hate on your loyal fan base.

I'm moving closer to calling Windows 8 an abominable failure.

Damn, even the WiiU didnt screw up backward compatibility.
Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 10 2013,06:58
Well, looks like both PS4 and XBox 720 will be in that boat.

Fuck.... that means the single PS3 game i bought and never opened wont be playable on my PS4 media center.
Posted by GORDON on Apr. 10 2013,07:04
Also, if these consoles were truly powerful enough to be worth the upgrade, they would be able to run software emulation for backward compatibility, ala DOSBOX.
Posted by Leisher on Apr. 10 2013,07:30
Consoles are awesome because:
-Games require no installation (some require updates though...)
-They attach to your TV with little fuss, which makes them great for local multiplayer games.

Anything else?

Reasons not to play on consoles:
1. Top three games in the world are LoL, DOTA 2, and WoW...all are PC games.
2. The biggest game in the world, LoL, is free to play.
3. The most lucrative pro scene in eSports is LoL.
4. All of the big MMOs are PC only.
5. PC games range in price from free to $10 less than console versions on day of release. Console games start at $60, and rumor has it the next gen will be even more expensive.
6. Steam & Steam Sales
7. Consoles are the primary realm of EA.
8. Games get "dumbed down" for consoles.
9. FPS with a controller. Ugh.
10. For the X-Box, you actually have to pay money to play online.
11. No mods for consoles games.
12. Console technology is ALWAYS behind PC technology meaning PC games look, sound, and play better.
13. Very, very few quality titles get released only for consoles. There are more PC only titles.
14. A console is nothing more than a PC. Why not buy a PC?

I could do this list all day.

Have we already passed the relevancy of consoles? Take all MOBAs, MMO, normal games, casual games, tablet/phone games, etc. and aren't consoles sort of a niche market anymore?

Posted by GORDON on Apr. 10 2013,08:19
Yeah but Madden 2013, dawg.
Posted by GORDON on Apr. 10 2013,08:55
While taking a dump just now, I realized that consoles are ghetto computer gaming, with all that implies.

Always money to be made selling "waste-of-time-technology" to the ghetto.

One person challenged his initial comment by saying: "You've lived in LA, SF, Seattle...very connected places. Try living in Janesville, WI or Blacksburg, VA."

Orth's response: "Why on earth would I live there?"

Odd, I find my self thinking, "Why on earth would I use your electronics when you seem to understand their UIs, use cases, and requirements a shade less well than a tribe of meth-head chimps pounding on keyboards for a few months?"  I take that back.  The druggie chimps wouldn't charge for XBox Live and co-op play, they'd just give it.

< X-Box 720 to use a projector? >

Check out the video. That's actually pretty cool. However, I think they're overestimating its worth.

First of all, what does it bring to the experience? Probably more if all that furniture wasn't in your room.

Second, who plays that far away from their TV? I have never played a game from that far away. Even when playing the Wii with friends, we're closer than that projector.

Third, it's a gimmick. It's the sort of thing that looks awesome in demos, and you've got to show to everyone who comes over, but when it comes to actually playing, you never use it.

Posted by TheCatt on May 03 2013,08:53
OK, that's kinda fucking cool.  At first I thought you meant the projector being the main screen, but now I get it.  Honestly, that's pretty awesome.  Is it essential?  No.  But it's one more step closer to Holodecks/etc.

When I console game, I'm about 8-10 feet away from my TV, I'd guess.

Projector bulba get really hot and can have short lives and cost a lot to replace.
Posted by TheCatt on May 03 2013,15:00
So can computers.
Posted by GORDON on May 04 2013,20:14
If that is a "real" projector bulb, the typical life is about 2000 hours, which would be about a year for a 5 hour-a-day gamer.  It will heat up to 200-300 degrees.  The last one I replaced cost about 100 dollars.

There is no way I would want something that hot in a computer without a pretty beefy cooling system.

Peeps already pay $1k for a 1080P projector system that is designed to be quiet and keep the bulb cool.  I am finding this a little..... strange.  If they are going to turn a projector into an XBox and sell it for $400, then I would give it a look...

but...

I would still wait 6 months for the new version of the red ring of death to surface.

It's a separate device that talks to the 720, wirelessly I hope.  It's not part of the xbox.
