< Game Website >

Tried this last night, it's free Alpha stage MMORPG.

It's like, Ultima Online combined with Animal Crossing.

Only, like 100x as hard.

Everything in the wild kills you but bunnies. Last night I played long enough to get killed by a bear walking carelessly in the forest. Oh, and because I was sucking badly, and was really low on my Overall Health, i got permanently killed.

I tried again, grabbed a bunch of bunnies and butchered them for meat (if you don't eat, you die, also, you have to eat to gain stat points)

Any time you do something in game you gain L.P. which you can spend on skills, that cost more for each point you put into them.

Built a Leanto, and some curing tubs. Dried out the bunny skins overnight to turn into leather to make a backpack.

You are supposed to build walls and a house and stuff to keep your work safe (but that would take like a day of effort cutting trees, probably more) So my stuff is sitting in the middle of nowhere, I can only hope it doesn't get stolen.

Also, the graphics are worse than UO.

Oh I forgot, there is some ridiculous long skill tree to fight. But when you can, everyone is killable.

Come to think of it, some dude who is older than me could just walk up and shoot an arrow in me, I don't even have the skills to fight back yet.

Bunnies aren't cute like everybody supposes.
They've got hoppy little legs, and twitchy little noses.
And what's with all the carrots; what do they need such good eyesight for, anyway?

To catch bunnies, you don't even fight them (I couldn't anyway)

You run after them until they stop moving, sneak in really close, and then grab them into your pack.

Then you have a 2x2 grid bunny in your pack (4x4). You right click it to "Wring Neck" to turn it into a 1x2 dead bunny. Then you Butcher it to get Bones, Meat, and Fur. Haven't found a use for the Bones, yet.

That sounds like the most prosaic video game ever produced.

I look forward to more of your review.  In the long run, is it actually fun?

Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 29 2010,15:37
Wife was interested until I read "Wring neck".  Then all interest went away.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 29 2010,15:44
Where are you?  Any way of working together?  I'm downloading it now.
Posted by Troy on Mar. 29 2010,15:54
There is... but i'm not totally sure how.

Try adding DTMan as your "Hearth Secret" when you make your character. It should let your hearth fire (log in spot) near mine.

If your wife is a builder, I think she would love this game.... seems to be all about planting and stuff.

I have a ton of axes now.

I don't suppose there's a town you can sell in?

Posted by Troy on Mar. 29 2010,16:42
None. Also, there isn't any money.
Posted by Troy on Mar. 29 2010,16:43
Fastest way i've seen to gain L.P. is to do tree/Board/Buckets.

Only way to delete and recreate your character is to die.

I tried it from my computer today that has Java.  could not connect to server.

I think I will move down the river a little into the middle of the wooded area and build a palisade wall.

It will require killing a large number of trees, but should be worth it, to keep us fenced in from baddies.

You gotta get right next to it(literally on top of it). Turn on running, make sure you have 2x2 free, and right click it.

A warhog ran over and killed me.  Before I could stand up, it killed me again.  It's just hovering over my body ready to kill me.

This is the stupidest game I've ever played.

I sort of agree.

It's really dumb, but I really want to build a house and some crops, so I'm at least going to do that.

Also, you learn to avoid boars and bears, at some point. I got gored to death on day one, but haven't been hit yet on the new character.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 30 2010,12:01
I had to chase the boar to have it kill me.  It would leave and I had to hunt it down again.

I read that people like to throw rocks at people from boats to kill them.  So, moving in land will help.  I have a dowsing rod, so, we can find water.  But, you've probably already got one too.

Didn't play very long last night though.  Lag was too thick.

Posted by Troy on Mar. 30 2010,12:04
I'm still not sure if this game is worth the effort.

I'll give it a little bit longer, but right now it's just too grindy to do the most basic stuff. Even compared to UO.

Edit: I just read that that really basic thing I thought was grindy is actually something I was supposed to find a "Vein" of.

It's clay. I think I need to pack up shop and sail away until I find a spot with enough clay to make the kiln/oven.

Any theories on the size of the world?  How secluded can people be?
Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 30 2010,20:04
Server came back up and I was right where I was when it crashed.  I put the boat behind a rock and tree about a screen to the South (UO Directions).  But, it looks like it just crashed again.  heheh

Shoot, some of the racks decayed or something, and I lost two seeds that were drying.

Bummer.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 31 2010,10:25
Or someone destroyed them?
Posted by Troy on Mar. 31 2010,10:32
Na, they would have destroyed the other two as well.

I read on the forums racks randomly decay sometimes. Supposed to keep them indoors.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 31 2010,12:11
ahhh.  Ok.  I also read that baskets decay quickly outside.  I figured the decay would be negated if it's on a claimed plot.  All the more reason to get that house built!

Just built someone else a house.  Was sailing around and saw a paved area.  So, I cleared off some baskets and built a house.  Then I build two cupboards and put them in the boat.  Now I've got a boat with SUPER STORAGE!!  Granted, I have to dock the boat, take the cupboard off, fill it, etc.  But, now when I'm out fishing, I don't have to go all the way home to unload the catch.
Posted by Troy on Apr. 01 2010,20:15
Ha, nice.

Which of our neighbors did you end up raiding?

I managed to punch two nests of ants tonight... strength 17, Unarmed combat 10 or so. I need to push it to 25/25 to take down a fox i think...

Did you find a hole with Plaice? Those fish are the best, apparently, they would make it so i could see the iron finding root.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,20:53
The few places I tried, I was only getting roaches and perch.  Might try other lures next.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,21:04
The neighbors were, somewhat across the river.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,21:57
I'm in search of a lake.  that's where you catch that fish.  Found a 24q pearch hole.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,22:39
Found 28q perch.  Found that in a very small area, you will change quality of fish.  On the same screen, I found q14-28 perch.  And my cooking skill cuts the q in half.  So, I have q14 roasted perch.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,22:43
Also, lost my boat to a bug.  Was sailing around and saw string on the shore near a house.  Got out of my boat and started walking towards the string.  I couldn't move.  When I got out of my boat, it put me on someone elses claim.  I couldn't move close enough to the boat to get back on.  I had to logout and back on to my hearth fire.  No way to walk back and get my boat.  Not that big of a deal cause I can make another.  Just sayin.

It was letting me make water skins out of rabbit hides.  So, I made three of them.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,22:50
It appears that skill points cost varrying amounts.  In other words:

I was at 9 marksmanship.  To take it to 20, I needed 14400 LP.  I had 12k+, so I bought it up to 18 for 12000.  Now I need 3900lp to get to 20.  So, the more you spend in one chunk, the cheaper each point is.

Went on a trip looking for seeds.

There is a fairly large operation in the hearth lands to our east. There was a cave nearby as well, I managed to steal 3 really nice cheeses... the owners have really good seeds, but they are all claimed.

Found a heard of cows close enough to the river to get them.  Got four of them.  Only got one hide from each one though.  All low quality stuff.  It's in the house uncooked right now.  Didn't have the energy to collect the bones and intestines though.  Meat and hides were all I took.
Posted by Troy on Apr. 05 2010,06:01

Dried and Cured, their hides will turn into 4 leather each....

Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 05 2010,06:37

Posted by Troy on Apr. 05 2010,06:58
Build a boat, join a party with us... and follow the arrow.

You could be literally hours away... by BOAT....

That's why I said you should do the hearthfire thing. If you haven't earned a ton of LP yet, just restart, we could get you started right....

Posted by Troy on Apr. 05 2010,07:14
@ Cake We need to get you a better quality axe and some survival skills... the quality of this meat is terrible.

Blade and Survival skill raises the quality of the stuff you get from animals.

Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 05 2010,07:22
Explain the hearthfire thing?  Preferably in details an idiot could follow.
Posted by Troy on Apr. 05 2010,07:41
When you make your character, in that water rectangle thing, there was a guy in the top center corner.

he asked for your "Hearthfire secret"

If you had put "DTMan", it would have put your hearthfire next to ours. Essentially your hearthfire is where you log in at, you can also use it to quick travel back home.

Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 05 2010,08:00

I tried to kill myself to recreate and it was going to take HOURS.  And I was finding animals to kill me.  I ended up creating a new account and character.

Last I read, you spawn in a random location.  And the only real way to tell where you are is to start walking to the left until you are blocked and can't go further.  Then, head up, till you stop.  Then you know you are in the upper left corner of the world.  Or, you run into one of the larger player villages that happen to know where they are on the map.

The "super grids" are 5000x5000 spaces and theres a grid of at least 5x5 grids.  People believe, and the devs confirm, that super grids have been added.  But no one knows if the world is still square.

As far as hunting leather, it's gonna have to be a group thing.  I had to travel so far to get it, it would have taken forever to collect it all.  That's why I abandoned all the intestines and bones.  With no boat storage, I can only carry what fits in my pack.  I had enough room for two cows worth of meat and hides and my basic hunting equipment.  So really, I'd like to see it where one of us kills them (me right now), and the other skins and butchers and transports.  While I'm killing the next one, the first is being gathered.  Last night, the pack was 4 large, and they all locked onto me after attacking.  Took about 20-30 minutes to kill them all, then a ton of time transporting.  The green area that we went to yesterday goes all the way to the river on the other side.  So, I could sail up and around and kill from the boat.  If we could get more straw baskets (and you can lift them with stuff in them), it will make it WAY more efficient.

Rage:  Considering saving up for that, so if we get attacked, I can try to defend.  However, how often do you think we'll get attacked?  If we are, what are the odds it will be by a few enough people that one, or even two of us could defend?  I read that the goons will go out and randomly wipe someone out.  In that case, we can't do anything but watch.  Smaller griefers though. . . we could defend against.  But, will that happen often enough to worry about?  Exploring around, I'm finding people playing closer to us than I thought they were.  Full on fenced in house to the NW of us.  Other settlements showing up here and there.  The biggest one to the NW had about 5 or so hearth fires burning.

If you see anyone that has wheat that isn't claimed, let me know asap!

Dunno about Rage, I think anyone we fight now would just roll us, better to focus on getting better first.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 05 2010,13:35
Ya, I would focus on getting better of course.  But I guess that's what I'm asking.  Should I keep going down the combat road.  Mainly right now for hunting (killed a handful of sheep and have more hides drying), but eventually for protection.  I'm not doing ANY farming or anything, so I'm trying to keep the hides coming in.  So, I could pick up sewing to make the sling, but if you are sewing for other stuff, then I'll keep picking up marksmanship.  I see another hearth fire, is that Catt?

Because LP are hard to come by, I think it's best to keep overlap to a minimum.  But, I think I'm going to have to pick up survival so my Q in hides/meat goes up.  You aren't always there to harvest for me.  Then there's cooking.  We harvest high Q meat, but kill it when we cook it!  You are doing the farming thing and exploration.

Should we be planning better to maximize our LP use?

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 06 2010,20:33
Need blocks only to extend the wall.  You leave spaces in the wall for the gate.  They recommend you extend your claim at least 1 or 2 tiles beyond your gate some people can't grief you and wall you inside your own walls.  When you build the gate, you get a key.  To copy the key, you need all kinds of shit.  I've read about bugs destroying keys and copies are highly recommended.  Devs won't replace keys or destroy gates if they are lost.  Villages have been closed because of this.

FYI.

Posted by Troy on Apr. 06 2010,21:28

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 06 2010,21:31

I'm out every day, slaving away, putting myself in harms way to provide, and I have to come home to this shit. . .

Due to the amount of clutteredness, I'm not bringing bones home any more till some of these are used up.  Running out of space.  So, if you need glue or something, have at them.  I'm leaving 10+ in the field as it is.

Only use for them I know is to make arrows...which should be a pretty compact way of using the, i thought.

We only need the glue to make that first post.

Archery is really slow, and I don't have enough support skills to make it do enough damage to beat sling/rocks.  I'm looking forward to your 'super sling' you mentioned.  I'll start converting the bones to arrows for future use then.  If something changes, let me know.  Same with intestines.  If we come up with a need (sausage?), I can supply them in large numbers.

Supersling is coming along...  farming is pretty realistic, i've been only regrowing high quality, which in turn turns into better stuff to plant, repeat....

I don't have any points in sewing though, so hopefully you do, when the time comes. I can probably get you some Q20 string in a few days...

You're training up tailoring?
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,14:11
Now that I have more skills, I am able to harvest some of the crops.  Should I be doing that?  Anything special to be done with what is harvested?  I'm guessing your skills are higher and will get better stuff, but, I want to do my part!  So, if I should be harvesting or anything else with the plants, let me know.

The trees are getting big!

Also, I just tried to place a claim to the east of yours.  Plan was to extend the claim to include the east wall we are building.  It said that I could not extend my claim so close to someone elses.  So, it's up to you to extend it. . .

When we find a second place to set up shop, I'd be happy to get it started.  Don't know if we want to do one next to the lake or something.  Or just wait till/if we find a mine.

I should be able to see rustroot. I'll go look for some this weekend and then we can start the process to go try to find a mine.

I don't know about farming. Check it on the wiki. It might be that when i put the crops in the ground, my farming skill takes precedence.

I generally eat the stuff that sucks, and put the better quality stuff back into the ground, so it's constantly getting better.

The Hemp is good to harvest... you can use 5 of the good strings to make a uber sling.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,17:26
I'm farming LP right now for sewing.  Going to get it up to 25 and then make the sling.

Went way up river and am deforesting an area making looms.  It's a good way to gain and do other stuff, I'm finding.  I have to baby sit it getting them setup.  But then each one takes a few minutes to build and my attention can wander to other things.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,17:30
Quality is checked on harvesting, not planting.  You can harvest seeds up to your farming skill.  Replant the better seeds and they should grow back better, but limited to your farming skill.

So, if it's not a problem, I'll let you harvest as I've only got 1 farming.  Unless you only have 1 too.  What's the quality you have been getting?

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,18:24
Sling quality is determined by your survival skill.  So, unless we need sewing for something else, I was gonna skip it and put the points into something else.

I was going to try it out, but it's way too small.  Using ":fs 0" doesn't seem to work on Windows 7.

Any idea how to make this thing larger?  Without having to change my desktop screen resolution?  As it is it's unplayable on my system.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,18:28
Check the thread a few pages back.  Troy posted a link to a different client that lets you play with a larger screen.  See if that helps.

Remember to use DTMan as the hearth secret or whatever with that dude in the upper left corner of the character creation room.

I already tried Pancho's client, but it just makes the window larger, not the contents of the window.  I get to see more tiny stuff that I can't see.  Which sadly isn't necessary.

To give you an idea of the size I'm seeing, the entire starting room is about two inches across for me.  It's hard to make out, but I think there's some people in there  They're just a few pixels high so I'm not entirely sure what they are.

This is with Pacho's client, which let me make the window itself bigger:

Any suggestions?

I think I may have started a character.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 09 2010,22:43
A little teenie tiny character?  Or did you fix your issues?

I lost my boat tonight.  I was sailing around when the server went down.  I was afraid to log back in to where I had been cause what if me and my boat were out of synch?  I'd end up in the middle of the river with no swimming. . .  So I picked hearth fire.

A little tiny character.  In a little tiny area surrounded by little tiny trees and little tiny huts.

I can't seem to move, though.  Nothing happens when I click anywhere, except for a flashing red rectangle.  *shrug*

It's just as well, I'd probably be awful at this game anyway.

Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 10 2010,07:16
What resolution do you have?  What java level?
Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 10 2010,07:44
Screen Resolution: 1680 x 1050
Java 6, Update 18

Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 10 2010,08:01
Is the title screen tiny too, or just when the game starts?
Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 10 2010,08:08
Title screen is fine, just once the game starts does it get itty bitty.  *shrug*
Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 10 2010,08:19
Weird.  No settings I could find to control it.
Posted by TheCatt on Apr. 10 2010,08:26
OK, I bought pottery, and digging for clay actually works this time.  Although clay seems kinda limited.

Well, farming a few more LP anyway

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 10 2010,11:13
You are stuck because you spawn on our property.  But since you don't have the tresspassing skill, you aren't allowed to be on our property.  So, it doesn't let you move.  You are stuck until Troy gets your ingame name and adds you to the allowable people list.

Try running the client from your Linux partition?
Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 10 2010,11:55
Do we have any straw yet?  I'd like to make some straw baskets for the boat but don't want to harvest the field if their are other plans (replanting or whatever) for it.
Posted by Troy on Apr. 10 2010,14:31
Yeah, i made the bee hive and the basket near the oven on the last harvest.

I will try to get some more.

I did some cleaning up in the house.  DON'T MESS IT UP!!

I made two more cupboards and packed things in more tightly.  I sorted, and tried to put like things together.  There's a couple cupboards that hold misc shit too.  All the food is to the left with lots of beef in there.

How much straw do we produce right now?  The bigger house requires a shit ton of it.  At our current production rate, how long would it take to get a shit ton?  Do we need a huge field of straw to have a shot at the house?

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 10 2010,17:43
Have we made any decisions on the wall and gates?

My thought was one on each side of the wall, but down for whatever.  I'm down for multiple gates on each side to due to potential key loss and whatnot as well.

We'd need metal to build the big house.

We'd be better off just getting another timber house.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 10 2010,20:20
Ya, but the big one is cooler.

Surely we could find SOMEONE to give us a few metals for something.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 11 2010,22:53
Crazy rollback occured.  I had done some exploring (found that village) with my boat.  When I got back, I got the plow and paved a path from the river up to our house so we can make the trip faster.  After the rollback, my boat is gone, our plow is gone, and all of my path except for the last 4 pavers I put down.  Why it left the last of them, I have no idea.  This would probably be one of those times where people were losing keys to gates and stuff.

Also, I noticed someone is deforesting an area up river to the nw.  About 20+ trees chopped down with the logs still sitting there.  Don't know if they are raising skill, or moving in.  But, there's activity up there.
