Is the reason I'm not playing...
Posted by Leisher on Jul. 07 2009,17:20
Never heard of it.
Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 07 2009,17:42
IIRC, it's a single-player text-based-graphics game that's very involved.

I remember something about cats being either a) a problem, or b) a food source.

(TPRJones @ Jul. 08 2009,08:38) QUOTE I remember something about cats being either a) a problem, or b) a food source. Both. ![]() Cats were a problem early in development because they would kill rodents and try to bring them back to their masters which would cause job cancellation messages when they got injured or whatever. The real problem is that if you don't keep your cat population under control, they will breed like motherfuckers and fill your fortress with them. To be honest, if there was enough interest in this game I'd make a main games post with information about gameplay/strategy and how to use < tilesets. > In general, the game is a very very deep "roguelike" mix of Sims/Majesty/Railroad tycoon/any RTS. It's also super invovled and you can easily lose track of time and find it's 4 in the morning and you have to get up in 3 hours. Oh, and it's free. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 14 2009,19:22
(TheCatt @ Jul. 08 2009,11:42) QUOTE Are you playing Eve again? I was briefly, as a trial account. I'll probably officially re-up sometime in the next couple of months, but not right away. I've got other things to keep me busy for a little while. It was much more fun this time. The epic quest arcs are pretty good stuff. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 22 2009,13:03
(Troy @ Jul. 07 2009,14:22) QUOTE Dwarf Fortress : Is the reason I'm not playing... Damn you Troy. Damn you straight to hell. This game is turning me into a catasser again. I can't stop. EDIT: To give you an idea of how extremely hooked I am, let me tell you that I'm a chain smoker. 1 1/2 packs a day on weekends is typical. This past Sunday I ran out. Given the decision between leaving DF for 10 minutes to get more smokes or doing without I did without. Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 22 2009,13:36
I knew TPR would get hooked on this game.
Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 22 2009,13:41
I just now finally bought a laptop, specifically so I can play DF elsewhere.
Posted by Troy on Jul. 22 2009,13:44
Yeah it's like a really really fun version of crack. Also, you have all these stories about what your dwarves did(how they died) that when told properly are hilarious only to people who have played the game. I also recommend Mayday's tileset, and a slightly scaled down version of the orc mod (when you are ready) Also, new cartoon: ![]() and this is an older one, but I forgot to post it:
Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 22 2009,14:14
That's what I started with: < http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php > I didn't care for Rogue because it looked like Algebra Vomit, so I figured I should start with the prettiest version of DF I could find.I've been getting my info from < The Dwarf Fortress Wiki >, I watched < captnduck's video tutorials > as I started my first couple of fortresses, and just last night I started into macros with a customized version of the < mine stitching macro > and my own bedroom layouts using < Quickfort > (and I might dump the mine stitching macro entirely and just build it in Quickfort instead). Oh! And < Dwarf Manager > is just about the most awesome thing ever, I now wouldn't want to play without it. Any other major references or tools I should consider? Posted by Troy on Jul. 22 2009,14:38
I only ever really used Dwarf Manager/Quikfort.After a few weeks I started trying out the mods though, which has been pretty fun. Adding some more creatures/monsters + another evil race that invades (orcs) was worth it for some fun ass gameplay. So was generating a customzied world with a shitton of lava and tropical forests to play on, minus aquifers, oh and the whole world was only 20 z levels, so uber flat. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 22 2009,14:55
I'm more of a builder and less of a fighter*, so I've been seeking out the easy places that look interesting for construction.Maybe later I'll go for something more challenging. But probably not. * For example, whenever I play any (W/St)arcraft game I always end up with the nicest compound - right up until it gets totally stomped because I only built, like, three military units. Even a totally peaceful fort should have a hella crazy trap system that can deal with a large invasion force!
Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 22 2009,16:30
I'm going to hack the game just to attack TPR's fortress.

I keep getting annoyed at my layout after 10 to 12 hours of play and starting over. I'm a bit OCD about this game so far, really. Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 22 2009,19:04

How is there not already a thread for this game?I've gotten obsessed with building the perfect fortress again, and will no longer be showing up on Star Trek Online for awhile. I can't help it. Once you have a Dwarf Fortress infection, it occasionally flares up and must be dealt with. There is no cure. You just have to ride it out, and be careful not to infect your loved ones. Some of the mods are really fun... not even the combat ones. Some of the better put together ones, add like 20 odd new plants, 100s of new animals, and a couple of interesting ore types. Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 25 2010,13:23
Forget Dwarf Manager. There's something much better: < http://www.ohloh.net/p/dwarftherapist >So, about generating custom worlds. I tried that awhile back, but the menu system for that was so thick with crap I had no idea where to start. Can you give me any pointers? Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 25 2010,13:41
Could you share links to (or names of) your favorites?I'm not so much interested in the ones that lead to more combat. But more ore types sounds interesting. Posted by WSGrundy on Mar. 25 2010,13:43
I have always wanted to try this game but it seemed like you needed to invest a lot of time and I don't like the idea of being married to one game.
Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 25 2010,14:27
Well, you don't have to invest a lot of time. It's just that you really really want to.

I think i used the Dig Deeper mod:< http://dffd.wimbli.com/category.php?id=12 > (this has a list of all the major mods, there are a lot more smaller ones) But I also remember going manually into the data files and deleting a lot of things I thought were crap, and manually only using creatures I had sprites of (I hunted down alternates) I think i tinkered with the data/skins file for the better part of two weeks before I got it right. Come to think of it, I'm not totally sure i didn't just piece together a few smaller mods, like more food/ore/animals/orcs into my own batch of awesome. I still have the version of DF i was using on my computer, but I only know that because i renamed the file "Click this one" Posted by Troy on Apr. 01 2010,06:12
Update a year in the making was released today. Not an April fools joke. Posted by Troy on Apr. 01 2010,06:28
Reading up on it.Medical, Military, Combat, 1000x more caves and interesting things in mountains. I might wait for the Mayday pack to release, though. Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 01 2010,17:41
raided a neighbor tonight. They're probably more newb than us. But, I got free stuff. Took some crap clay and built stuff they had started. So, the best thing I stole from them was LP. Oh, and a bone hook and a dream. So, nothing major.

One thing I have learned from this game. . . if a game has a good concept and is done well, graphics will be over looked. This game has a GOOD base and the concept is extremely playable. The fact that it has a java client and is prone to lag are it's biggest flaws. It would not be hard to write a game people will play from your basement. This game is written by two guys in Norway? Swedan? Belguim? I don't remember. But, it's too dudes in their college dorm. Then there's dwarf fortress. Isn't that ascii or something? Again, a solid game and people will play without WoW graphics. Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 02 2010,04:35
Good graphics can make a good game better. They can't make a bad game good.Nice save on the misposts, though. Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 02 2010,10:17
Actually, it wasn't a save. . . . it was two misposts in a row!Ya. Graphics make it better. But often, people who can code a good game, can't draw to save their lives. Posted by Troy on Apr. 02 2010,10:54
If enough people on this forum played DF, I would say we should do a year by year switch off... Essentially tell the story of a Fortress in a really hard Area, with each person taking a year, taking good pictures, doing a write-up, and then passing it to the next guy for a year. Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 02 2010,13:31
RL year, or in game year? If in game, how long is a year?
Posted by Troy on Apr. 02 2010,13:44
An hour or so of playing.

Yeah, every one of his major releases is buggy as hell...You usually have to wait a few weeks for it to be playable. I've heard great things about arena mode, and the combat log though... Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 02 2010,17:46
I'm back in 40d for now.And holy hell, but one of my dwarves just created an artifact worth 1.3mil. It's a silk bag covered in coal, lignite, and diamonds. Posted by Cakedaddy on Apr. 02 2010,18:12

Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 03 2010,08:39
As long as that woman has a beard and can carry around 135kg on her shoulder, sure.

Combat and Hospital/Health care systems are great, as long as you have good medical dwarves, space, and all the tools they need, surgery/stiches/sutures are very functional, and will save you a lot of headache. All the monsters are harder though, so you definitely need it. Last night I stayed up until 2 AM playing, just couldn't stop. I embarked in an evil/wild area, and shit started hard and got harder. I brought along one axe dwarf, who kiled lots of harpies and an ogre or two. Then, a Troll wandered up, and tore the legs off my one metal smiths before he and my Axedwarf got into a fight. Axedwarf chopped a few chunks off the the Troll, who responded by TEARING THE AXEDWARVES CHAINMAIL LEGGINGS OFF AND BEATING HIM TO DEATH WITH IT! A nearby woodcutter finished the troll off. I spent the next hour figuring out how to get an emergency room set up for the metalsmith with one leg. Eventually figured it out, and after three rounds of surgery, and a few seasons in bed, he somewhat recovered, but is missing his arm and leg, so he has to use a crutch. Posted by TPRJones on Apr. 09 2010,09:31
Whoa.On the one hand that sounds epically interesting. On the other hand combat just annoys me, I want to dig and build in peace. Posted by Troy on Apr. 09 2010,09:37
The new combat logs are crazy.Blow by blow of what happened, if you like that sort of thing, it's pretty epic. Posted by Troy on Apr. 16 2010,10:17
Dwarf Fortress "Dry Savannah Stronghold" Year 5Our 30 strong dwarf military and the 10 Guardsmen police force were sent down to investigate a large cave found 5 levels down from the surface of initial excavation. The Cavern turned out to be 4 Z levels deep and sprawled with Gems, Ores, and.... creatures. 2 were lost to Giant Cave Spider venom, and the fort Doctor is busy trying to stop every tissue in their bodies from slowly necrophaging. Much surgery is required. Deeper down, we discovered a Terrible Monstrosity made entirely of salt, who seemed un-killable. I left a squad to keep him busy and then sealed the entrance to the Caves. They have since perished to a man. We will have to dig down around the caves, or risk setting the Monster loose into the fortress proper, where he would no doubt kill every last man, woman and child. Weakened as we are, we can only hope that the nearby Goblin fortress doesn't send out a raiding party, and if they do, rely on our traps and bridges to keep them at bay. Luckily, ample food stores and the reduction in population will mean a much easier winter for all, and we can only hope the Mountainhomes send new migrants to conscript into the military. Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 04 2010,13:15
I'm deep into 2010 now. It is no longer buggy and hard to run. Smooth as glass. And boy has it been good. I've had some interesting forts. My favorite so far started me in the bottom of a deep river canyon on top of the frozen river. In early spring, so it could suddenly thaw and drown everything at any moment. With no way of having enough time to unload the wagon before that happened, it was an interesting scramble to dam up the river and clear out the ice before the thaw. Ended up with a wonderful fort built right into both walls of the river canyon, with an entrance ramp that spiraled through several Z levels around the waterfall that fed into it from a different river. Also had a herd of unicorns corralled on a mesa right next to the fort for some high-quality (if insanely dangerous) meat, hide, and bone farming. And I figured out some really interesting tricks involving the most defensible entrance setup on a river map. If only it didn't take me three game years to notice that I wasn't getting any migrants (nor even messages about no migrants this season). My best guess is that with the only entrance locations on the map on the river I would never get any migrants unless they randomly happened to show up in the dead of winter ... which they pretty much never do in DF. *sigh* Still a very fun game, and the military options in the new version are great. No more micromanagement of the military required. Posted by Leisher on Jun. 03 2014,11:14

At this point it's buggy and tile-sets aren't supported. If you are proficient in reading the matrix though, no worries. E: early bug, dwarves and AI can't handle the trees too well yet. They end up climbing them and getting stuck. Also last night I had a raven-bird-man fly into one and get splatted. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 08 2014,10:54
Huh.I think I'll wait a couple of months for the inevitable bug patch. But it does sound interesting and thanks for the heads up! Posted by Troy on Jul. 08 2014,19:21
New skill. Discipline. Dwarves ability to not run screaming when shit gets real. Not sure how to train it yet, but not having it has been a problem. One zombie bull ruins my day. Rip Posted by Troy on Jul. 24 2014,08:55
I accidentally re-created the prequel to The Hobbit last night in Dwarf Fortress. It was near the end of my second year, with my fortress situated next to an evil marsh. I'd been prosperous: stock piles of food, an iron weapon industry, a large perimeter wall. My three squads of largely inept military dwarves were finally starting to handle the various undead animals rising from the evil marsh waters. Then, out of nowhere, Smaug's brother, some giant asshole of a red dragon, shows up at my fort. Completely wrecks everyone, fire shooting everywhere, my "first" military squad with actual iron breastplates might as well have not even been there. I think my sergeant got ONE spear hit on the dragon. rip shadydicks or whatever the fort was called |
