Topic: Time to try UO...

I think I'm ready to give UO a try.  Should I play a free server (and if so which one) or go ahead and pay to play the real deal?  Anything I should know before I get into UO?

Relevant info: I'm not into PvP nor even combat in general, I'll most likely do all the other stuff there is to do in UO ... whatever that might be.  But then I also like screwing with people, so maybe I'll PvP after all.  No idea.

Even if you don't PVP, the existence of PVP makes the reward of everything else that much sweeter.

If you play the official UO servers, you may as well play Everquest instead.  I'd recommend the last server we played for 10 minutes (NOT Metropolis).  Defiance?

Since he's not all about the PvP, and more into the 'checking everything out', I'd go with a different server than Defiance.  Defiance has about 50% of the content turned off to match what the game was 5 years ago more closely.  I couldn't even begin to tell you which server to play that would have all the content turned on, but I'm sure there is a free server you could play that would give it to you.  There are also alot of free servers with custom stuff that adds/changes content.  Again, no solid recommendations though.  I would sort the list of servers by population, and go from there.  Because even though you may not want to spend any time with other people, you'll still need them to really experience what the game has to offer.  Much of the fun of the game was the player based economy.  I would highly recommend a free server before an EA pay server.  You will get most of the content at no cost.  If you like it, then try a real server cause there will be more people, and latest content, etc.  But try it before you buy it cause you can.

Is there such a list somewhere of UO servers?
Posted by GORDON on Feb. 15 2007,08:01
Find and download "UO Gateway," which is a generic server-launcher/accesser for 99% of the free servers.  There you can sort by server population and features, and there are usually links to the servers' home pages.
Posted by GORDON on Feb. 15 2007,08:02
PS - Look for a server with at least 150 minimum-average-population online.  200 would be better.

In my opinion.

Some have several hundred on at a time, and may actually be what you're looking for.

Cool, thanks!

You'll also need the UO client... available for download at various places.

And if you can't find it I know an unofficial spot to find it.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Feb. 15 2007,17:54
You are required to download it from EA's sight now.  It's illegal to host it.  Free server sites all have links to the EA download sight.  Getting it should be easy and fast.

Well, I suck at this game so far.  Let's see, I started a blacksmith, got lost in the woods outside Trinsic, killed a snake, tamed three chickens, two dogs, and a cat, and ended up getting killed by a harpy and walking to Briton.  Where I finally found a forge and couldn't figure out how to use it.

So now I'm off to find some sort of beginners guide online.  Something for the really clueless.  :)

Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 16 2007,12:52
Okay, so after reading up a bit I decided to venture out in search of ore.  About five seconds after reading "You are no longer under the protection of the guards" somebody one-shotted me and teabagged my corpse.  Since then I've been running around for about an hour trying to find a damn healer.  I can't seem to find anything online about where to find one.  This ghost thing is getting old.  Any advice?

Oh, I'm in that Britania Town place.

Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 16 2007,13:04
Nevermind, all fixed.  UOAM is cool.
Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 16 2007,13:52
So, after being stripped clean of my ore, ingots, armor, gold, and weapons five times now, my next question is how do you keep from being constantly ganked by GM Badasses?  Do I have to GM Baddassery myself, or is there something else to be done?

I like playing PvP games, but there are limits to the number of times I liked to be ganked in a short period of time.

EDIT: And I gotta say, it's not very bright of the gankers.  It's like overfishing a pond: too many ganks too often, and there won't be any more newbies to gank.

Posted by GORDON on Feb. 16 2007,15:03
Go to Cove... you can mine and smith all in a town guard zone.

Unless your server has goofy rules.

If Cove is crowded, Delucia.  Same thing.

Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 16 2007,19:36
I went to a carebear server.  Actually, the carebeariest of carebear servers.  When you first log on a GM greets you, gives you a beetle and a ton of gold, and tells you all about their wonderful server.  And I think everyone is singing cumbaya around Brit Bank.

It'll get old, but for now I might as well play there while I learn how the game works.

Badly.  Very, very badly.
Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 17 2007,12:31
Oh, I'm taking everything I learn with an enormous grain of salt, don't worry.  I'm not the type that's stupid enough to think that just because hanging out at Cafe Dumonde on the square is nice and fun that that means it's safe to wander around the 6th District at night alone and unarmed.

Funny, this is exactly the way UO was back in 1998-1999 when I started playing.  Either you got good at mining spots that were in guard zones or very good at running and hiding, or you were fresh meat who got ganked regularly.  I only got ganked a few times before I figured it out.  I miss pre UO:R sometimes.

Indeed.  That fucker saved my ass countless times when I was treasure hunting.

And I hope you're using Razer, too.
Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 18 2007,08:45
Yeah, although so far I'm only using it for macros.  I made a nifty mining macro that watches for "no more metal" notes and moves left, when it hits the wall moves back to the right and down to the next row, when the backpack is full dumps ore into my packhorses, and when my packhorses are full makes a loud rude noise to get my attention so I know it's time to go back to town.

Macros are fun.

Posted by GORDON on Feb. 18 2007,09:00
Well good.  Macros take out 90% of the tedium.

I used it a shitload for hotkeys and screenshots, too.  I had it take a screenshot every time someone died on my screen... which was good during our PVP days.

If there was one thing EVE got right, it was the skill gain system.  Just set a timer & forget it.
Posted by TPRJones on Feb. 21 2007,11:02
Did they ever put in a web interface to let you manage that from outside the game?  That's the only piece they were missing to make it perfect back when I was playing.  Logging in just to change skills and log out again was such a pain, and you can't do it from work.

I had a dedicated UO PC in my office.
Posted by Cakedaddy on Feb. 21 2007,15:32
Check out EasyUO.  Hard core expert level macroing going on there.  Works well if you can pick up programming languages easy.  We had an auto target system setup on one server.  We designate a 'leader'.  Who ever that person targeted, all others were updated so they automatically hit them as well.  Didn't have to name names, pick them out of a crowd, etc.  Leader would drop the spell, and the rest just hit "Last taget".  Worked GREAT when you were highly out numbered.  You could all run in, drop your one spell and run away.  3 seconds later, if the dice rolls were high enough, the target would fall.  We could even change leadership on the fly if the leader gets caught and dies or something.  Wasn't flawless, but it worked more than it didn't.

Had a really good mining macro too.  Start it, go to bed, wake up either stuck in the corner of the smith shop as a ghost, or with 15k ingots in your bank.  Depends on if anyone suicided the macro miners or not.

Speaking of macro mining. . . became a whole seperate game in UO.  Constant competition to out mine the other macroers and avoid the macro killers.  Had subroutines that would call gaurds, recall to a safe spot, wait some time, recall back to a random spot in town, make way back to the mountain, continue macroing.  Get new shovels as they broke, dump ingots off in the bank, etc.  Macro killers would think up new way to kill you, you tweaked to stay alive.  Was fun.

Until the Matropolis admins decided to take the side of the macro miners.

The server I'm playing has this big specialized pet system, but I'm curious about the regular game: what do you do with your pets when you log out?  Can you keep them locked up in your house, or what?
Posted by Cakedaddy on Mar. 03 2007,16:20
You stable them.  If you don't, they can be killed, go wild, etc.  Stabling is the only secure storage system for pets.  Some servers limit how many animals you can stable and/or charge you for stabling.  Regular server charges you (negligable amount) and limits you based on your taming/vet/other skills.
Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 03 2007,17:16
Ah, gotcha.

The one I'm on limits it to two stabled, but there's other ways to deal with them (shrinking).  I was just wondering how that compared to the real servers.

So TPR.... playing on Defiance?
Posted by TPRJones on Jun. 06 2007,15:55
Nah, I was playing some carebear server for a bit but it got boring fast.

I'm trying to find a Wii for a good price, and will then not have time for any MMOs.

Posted by GORDON on Jun. 06 2007,16:01
If you start back, get on Defiance.

I'm placing my first house there in the enar future.

It's a different game when someone is showing you how to do shit.

Does it mean that I'm old that I have no temptation to buy a Wii whatsoever?
Posted by Vince on Jun. 10 2007,08:31
If so, you can sit up on the porch in our rockers and sip tea with me

Gordon just doesn't understand all these new-fangled electronical devices that people now-a-days play with.

Just got a Wii this morning (had to stand in line outside Circuit City for two hours to get one of the 14 they had).  It's teh awseome!
