Howdy!

Me again, If anyone still plays UO at all around here, there's a new shard that started a week ago that promotes OSI 98 sytle gameplay. Minus mounts, its a perfect server. The name is "sosarian rift" You can find it on UOGateway by hitting ctrl+F and search for it... I encourage anyone who's still about UO to give it a shot, I can help you out if you want to start a character and see what it's all about.

Anyway good day..

Why in the world are there no mounts?  How do you promote OSI '98, with no mounts?  Mounts were 100% part of OSI '98.  I can not stand it when people try to draw other people to their servers with promises of emulating the best years of UO. . . and then change it to make it better.  It's either OSI '98, or it's not.  And if there are no mounts, then it's not.  So don't try to sucker people into playing with the fake OSI '98 title.  It's there own special flavor of UO, period.

It's just staggering that it's OBVIOUS people want OSI '98/99 back.  And if someone actually created it, it would be the biggest player run server, ever.  However, people's egos step in and they figure they can make it 'better' than when things were the best.

It was the best.  Best.  Get it?  Best.  You might say "It had it's problems with this, that, and the other thing."  But you know what?  It was still the best.  And if someone built that, they would come.  Even with 'this, that, and the other thing'.  You know why?  Because it would be the best.  The population died when things deviated from 'best'.  It always has, and always will.

But, thank you for the invitation.  When someone creates a REAL OSI '98/99 server, you can believe I will be there.  (And beating TDE, KDC, etc up, just like before!!)

I'd ALMOST be interested in the '98-'99 playstyle again.  That was when I hit UO the most.  Christ, has it been that long?
Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 11 2005,07:22
And that's my point exactly. . . .
Posted by Malcolm on Nov. 11 2005,08:08
Ah, yes, back when I was a tailorin' fool w\ eight sheep in my shack of a house out in the middle of nowhere near Yew w\ a spinning wheel & a loom.  I fit more crap into that house than humanly possible.

I miss those days of UO too. If someone setup a server that was like those days, I'd play.

Could you still gate monsters at that time?

Yea, I think so.  That's how I got the sheep to follow me into the house.  Used to go 'round the sheep farm when they spawned.  But I want protection from shit like earthquake & chain lightning in the house.  Bastards kept killing my sheep.  That wool may as well've been made of fucking gold.

Oh fine.  Suppose I won't be mining sheep anyhow in preperation for the big "land rush" that tooks years to come.

Come to think of it, that would make it next to impossible to dislodge someone from a house.

Oh yeah, "We swear, it isn't a mirror."

Because, you know, they denuded the trees.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 13 2005,12:30
Just cause I was bored and was thinking "Maybe it'll be a decent filler. . .", I went to check out this server.  Hit their website to check news, rules, etc.

Custom map.  There are three land forms.  One main one that looks like it has Brit on it.  One Ice Island that has a town/city on it.  And one other that looks like a mix between Ocllo and Bucs.  So, it has no mounts and the land mass is completely different.  Other than that, it's UO '98.  People are insane. . .

However, it DID have a pic with a magic necklace implying it had the buff clothes stuff which metro never had.

There are so many servers out there that have SOME of uo 98/99, but NONE of them have it all.  When are they going to figure this shit out?!?!?

Lets make a UO '98 server. . . EVERYONE will play it!!  Ya!!  But, lets make it better with no mounts and a custom land mass to force everyone in a smaller area so there's more PvP action. . .  But wait, that's not UO 98/99.  That's ok, this will be 'better'.

fucking morons

When will someone get this shit right?!

Posted by Troy on Nov. 13 2005,13:00
Yeah, I used to love being able to get off the beaten path and do a lil magic item/ gold farming and then be able to also get pack into civilization and beat up on some orange/reds.

This really has me wishing there was another game out there I could start playing that was similar... Are any on the horizon at all?

Posted by Malcolm on Nov. 13 2005,14:37
The MMOG market has become...stagnant, in my opinion.  For the most part, you'll be playing nth-generation EQ.
Posted by GORDON on Nov. 13 2005,14:42
I've said for years that nobody yet has approached the playability of UO.  They all go for 1st person eye candy and all-Trammal play.
Posted by TheCatt on Nov. 13 2005,16:07
My favorite MMOG was back in the 80's... it was down hill once they had graphics instead of command line interfaces.
Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 13 2005,21:51
The best MMOG was the first!  Gaming has been crap ever since they got rid of the punch cards and switched over to lame keyboards and ASCII eye-candy.  Bah.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 14 2005,09:11
That's exactly how I was going to respond to Catt!
Posted by Troy on Nov. 14 2005,09:50
Seriously though, if anyone can seriously get a line on a game with lootable PVP I'll hop on immediatly...

I know Eve has it for sure, I was kind of waiting for a consensus of "cool or not" for a non Fantasy themed MMO tho.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 14 2005,09:53
I have no line on anything.  I intend to try Eve though.

I am coming to the obvious conclusion that I'm either going to have to write the next killer MMORPG game myself, or build an actual UO '99 server myself.  No one else is stepping up.

Why hasn't a game like we all want been created yet? Apparently there are two completly different mindsets on MMOs

However SOME of his loot should drop.

***(Response from Carebear)***

Ummm first off....this means you'll have vultures..players just singling out well geared players for kills....second it means you'll have exclusive groups...looking to optimize their kill power, pick up groups will become even less likely...finally....I know I wouldn't like to loose all my gear after PvPing for a day and thus be a even "easier" kill each time I die.

Oh and of course..what if you get disco'ed, or have to leave suddenly....or lag or a server problem causes you to die??

Wow would you be peeved...

thats why causing players to loose very difficult to acquire items is NOT a good idea..

This is taken from a random Stratics message board.

Most of us will read the first quote and agree wholehardly...

Then read the response... I couldn't get my mind about what he was complaining about... actually the opposite, the situations he described sounds FUN and EXCITING to me... if these people really wanted games this dull and repeptive... why are they suprised when they hit a level cap(WoW) for example and suddenly it is so dull and no longer thrilling.

That's it, i've spent too much valuable time reading up on why the MMOs are slowly sinking into blandness!

My last forrey found < Darkfall >.

Basically UO/Shadowbane hybird....

Full loot, Death, Open PvP, Crafting + Player towns and a couple factions....

I'd be interested... but i'll probaly be 30 by the time it comes out

Posted by GORDON on Nov. 14 2005,13:29
That post is completely what made UO great... the ability to play Wal-Mart, dres-up, chess, dungeon hopper, and basketball all on the same playing field... and it worked.

Leave town, you and everything you're caryring is at risk.  Period.  Crybabies stay home.

It's quite perfect.

I had to register just to enlarge my e-peen by attacking this fag.

1. SR never claimed to be a "real Pre-UO:R shard", it's a hybrid.

2.  Ever heard of Rebirth?  It's everything you have said doesn't exist in a UO server. Inform yourself moron.

3.  I highly doubt you could muster your attention span to make a server and I even more highly doubt you could script anything in C#.

I like how people are still so bitter over the spankings we gave them on GL or Metro that they feel the need to speak.  My favorite was Darwin of Metro posting about how we sucked on GL and his guild use to knock us around all the time.

Let it go people.  Let it go.

Or

Build a REAL uo'99 server and you can have a second chance.

I don't know....... I used to really enjoy humiliating the morons in the UO community, but I'm not sure if it sounds fun any more.

For me it was always about having fun at the expense of morons.  If I've lost the joy of that, then I'm not sure if there's a point.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 26 2005,19:42
You haven't.  We just don't have a good place to do it any more.

Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 26 2005,22:50
It's like kicking ugly puppies.  Sure for awhile it's fun because they are just so damn ugly kicking them is a pleasure, but eventually it gets old because puppies just can't fight back enough to make it a challenge.
Posted by Rydia on Nov. 26 2005,23:15
Well, yes it is almost EXACTLY like 98 UO, so if anyone is interested in joining read brodies post. gating monsters and NPCs, cast summons in town, say 'vendor buy' to get a vendors attention. I wont go into detail but is as PreUOR as any shard has gotten.

not to mention the sweet clothing with magic attribues(invis, teleport, magic reflect), and the weapons with weakness/lightning/fireball/etc :p

Good Game sirs.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 27 2005,05:45
Sad thing is, the server admin has already taken the time to register on these boards to call me a fag.  That just don't bode well.

Now if bitter ol' Brodie had played his cards better, he could have waited for me to take the time to actually create a character, collect some wealth, etc.  And THEN mess with me!  "I KNOW I placed a house around here somewhere!"  "I could have sworn I was GM magery, how come I have 72 now?"  Etc.

I'm sorry, but my faith in ex-TDE and/or Minoc Trash just isn't high enough to bother with the server.  Expecially when they actually take the time to call me a fag.  Good grief.

I guess along with being UO'99, I would also require compentent admins.  It's fun to fight the bad guys in the game.  It sucks when you have to fight a political battle with them outside the server boundaries.

Posted by GORDON on Nov. 27 2005,07:15
The admins are what killed Metropolis.  It was "close enough" for us to have fun, but extreme admin ignorance drove us away.  And hell... the dtman-Metro-UO page was GREAT free advertising for them.  My UO page is still a high Google hit for UO/Metro seaches (at least it used to be).  But they shit on me, so to hell with them.

I knew the name "Brodie" sounded familiar.  He's ex-TDE?  And he runs the server?  Ha.  Yeah, right, I'm going to invest time on THAT server.

Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 27 2005,11:06
*sniff* *sniff*

What is that smell?

*sniff*

Smells like ... chicken.

Posted by GORDON on Nov. 27 2005,11:16
I'll never again invest time on a server run by:

a) accountants (which killed the official OSI-UO)

b) anyone under the age of 30. (immaturity/stupidity which kills most player-run servers)

Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 27 2005,11:21
Uh huh.  That might save you some face, sure.  Just keep telling yourself that.

:p

Posted by GORDON on Nov. 27 2005,11:25

< I see dead Brodies >

Most of the TDE/Minoc Trash pictures were lost, but we still had a couple.  He was part of the crew that would create a new guild every week just to be able to hop in and out of war with us.

Posted by GORDON on Nov. 27 2005,16:44
Oh riiiight.  He lived in a 2 story log cabin when we first met him.

That kill in the cave where I was grey in front of a bunch of blues was one of my UO career highlights.  With guard zones and anti-recall-when-aggressor flags, I was dead meat if they  would have been brave enough to attack.

Posted by Cakedaddy on Nov. 27 2005,16:53
Actually, you were hidden.  heheh
Posted by GORDON on Nov. 27 2005,17:31
Right.  But I hid riht in front of them, and they had to have seen it.  Nobody revealed me, because then they knew they'd have to attck me... or look like a punk.  So they didn't.  And I ended up walking into the middle of their group, killing one, looted him, and got out clean.

Good times.

Of course, i was still a no-talent gay fag, lol wtf.

Posted by Troy on Nov. 27 2005,22:05
The UO archives always make me laugh, the pictures I used to have of me and Sekers TKV kills were all lost about 2-3 computers ago.

I still remember getting chased by Gordo and Alex all over the expansion, pretending I was out of trapped pouches until the right moment. The shoddy internet was pretty funny too, I'd be evading and fighting great, and suddenly just be left standing there until I could fix the new router!

Good times.
