Forum: Internet Links Topic: Hey, check out this YouTube video! started by: GORDON Posted by GORDON on Jul. 10 2006,12:34
Put the link and general info about the video, and then we won't have hundreds of different threads for them.Let me know if this is a shitty idea. Posted by Leisher on Jul. 10 2006,13:50
Yes, but what about comments? This chain could end up being 15 posts long with only one link. It's not a bad idea, but how do we keep the chain from becoming a jumbled mess? For example, my post here doesn't even contain a video. Maybe we should just post a rule stating that linked videos and such need to be collected until you have a minimum of 5, then shove them all into one post? Posted by Cakedaddy on Jul. 10 2006,19:02
Or, post the link to the video, and right under it a 'feedback' link.
Posted by Leisher on Jul. 10 2006,19:28
And where does the feedback link take you? The object here is to reduce the numbers of threads.
Posted by Alhazad on Jul. 10 2006,20:27
jes' leave it like this
Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 10 2006,21:08
How about simple comments here, but if you find yourself starting what you think may be a big conversation about something someone posted, then start a seperate thread linking back?Or we could just have a big thread talking about how to keep the thread from being too big. ![]() Posted by Cakedaddy on Jul. 10 2006,23:23
I thought it was to consolidate the links so we would have one big thread with cool/funny movies in it.Otherwise, there's no solution. Most of the stuff people link to is linked to in order to inspire conversation. Posted by Alhazad on Jul. 11 2006,01:33
"Hey guys, I found this cool video you should all watch, but don't talk to me about it because I can't be seen associating with you libertarian perverts."
Posted by Leisher on Jul. 11 2006,05:08
Exactly. The Online Games sticky thread I created so peeps could have one stop to go if they get bored at work or whatever. No conversation needed in there, just a link and quick description. Videos are different in that they do generate conversation. Some videos get no responses, other gets dozens. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 13 2006,18:05

Just know that those are just styrofome objects shaped like planes. . . they don't follow any of the physics that apply to normal planes. The body is super thin. So, looking at them from the side, they look somewhat correct. Look at them from above, and they are about 1/4" thick. Not saying the 'pilot' didn't have tallent. But, the thing he was flying was hardly a plane as well. Also, those thing are only flyable indoors. Take that outside where there is even the slightest of breeze and you can't do ANYthing with it cause it's so light. But it has to be to keep the thrust to weight ratio so out of wack. Thus the hovering and what not. Posted by Paul on Nov. 10 2006,07:13

Posted by Leisher on Dec. 12 2006,12:59
I don't know, I'm thinking it might have been staged. Paulie does drop prior to the punch arriving and the cop not only shows up only afterwards, but doesn't make any effort to secure the criminal. He just ushers him off stage. If it wasn't, well, tough shit for Pauly. I do NOT agree with the guy getting up on stage and hitting him, but I also don't think you should believe you're untouchable just because you've got a mic in your hand. The funny part is reading all the statements by enlightened blue staters. For people who preach tolerance and peace they sure do talk crazy. Apparently, it's ok to wish violent acts upon someone, but NOT ok to do them yourself. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 12 2006,16:57

I remember hearing about some guy dying from an allergy to the stuff or something. But really, it's not that surprising that he's stupid about it. "Drug Education" isn't what it should be in this country. Instead of learning the truth about drugs, they stuff people's heads full of total bullshit about how it's all deadly and evil. Hell, my boss is of the opinion that one puff of weed is enough to make you go mad, strip naked, and kill someone. The end result of that sort of "education" is this stupid 911 call. 1. I hear pot makes you paranoid. He was paranoid about ODing.2. Maybe he stole the shit from the evidence locker and maybe after he ate it he thought it might be laced with poison or something. Either way, put him in jail for the average number of years all the people he's busted for pot possession have gone to jail, +5 for abusing the trust of being a cop. (GORDON @ Jul. 02 2007,16:22) QUOTE 1. I hear pot makes you paranoid. He was paranoid about ODing. Not generally. Being paranoid makes you paranoid, pot can just magnify what is already there. People that aren't paranoid most of the time usually also are not paranoid on pot. QUOTE 2. Maybe he stole the shit from the evidence locker and maybe after he ate it he thought it might be laced with poison or something. Admittedly this could be a concern. But "time is slowing down" is a very normal reaction to pot, and the fact that a drug enforcement officer is unaware of that is just rediculious. Posted by Malcolm on Jul. 03 2007,09:35

The wind tears through the parking lot, but even in the midst of Rita those plants there hardly stirred at all. The top of that little courtyard is open, so you'll see some rain. But that'll probably be it. I just set up a second cam ($24 at Walgreens, the only place still open at 2PM this afternoon) on my patio facing down between the buildings. That one should get some wind whipping up from the south ... but still probably not enough to be exciting. Plus the image is way overexposed, and I'm not sure what to do about that, sadly. Posted by Leisher on Dec. 09 2008,05:21
If it was planned, then the video becomes rather boring. If you listen to the chatter, I'm pretty sure it wasn't planned. Red talks about Blue's lack of proper tactics and mocks them for their play and inability to get out the door. They also talk about people dropping from the Blue team. I think someone on Blue was probably saying "Everyone go heavy and that's how we'll beat this scout rush." Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 09 2008,06:21
Which, while not the best way, might work if the teams were balanced. But it looks like blue only had about four players.More likely while still a spontaneous event, the blue team decided to play along. You could hear them talking about how interestingly frightening the scout swarm was, and if they'd all gone pyro it wouldn't have been as interesting. Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 03 2009,06:11

EDIT: And I don't understand the "we didn't land on the moon" crowd at all. The technology was sound, the methodology was good, why do they think it's so impossible that we did it? Just because we haven't done it again? That's not hard to understand, we cancelled the program that could do it again and instead built Space Busses that aren't good for much beyond low earth orbit. Because people in the 70s were more concerned about the energy crisis and the environment and getting high than they were with real scientific progress. Goddamn hippies. So I've been watching this guy on YouTube, and he's good with special effects. Really really good. He's not Hollywood, he's not (at least not yet) professional, he's just some guy with a Mac and skill and brains. And he puts most action films to shame with some of his stuff. Here's a good example of a little thing he did, and then a Behind the Scenes where he touches on why action films often suck. Update: Okay, I guess he is professional in a sense. He gets enough views that YouTube pays him now. But still, you know what I mean. Posted by TPRJones on Jun. 21 2010,13:40

Posted by Leisher on Apr. 27 2011,13:08
Tiny bit of false advertising there. That wasn't two big ass cops beating on a little woman. That was one asshole who shouldn't have a badge hitting a woman, and his partner being forced into the arrest. Not everyone who fills out an application should be a cop. Granted, the woman had her hands on him (and that's what could save his career), but what the fuck gave him the right to try and smack her? And did you see that dude's face when she swung back? That was pure rage and his second swing was meant to injure. I guarantee you that's not the first time he has hit a woman. If that had been a man who swung at him, I'd totally understand the response, although I doubt you'd try to smack him first... That little chick should have been warned that she would be arrested if she kept trying to interfere. If she didn't back away, and then put hands on the cop, they could have simply arrested her without needing to try and take her fucking head off. I hope the woman beater loses his badge. If you can't keep cool when an unarmed 100 pound woman touches you, how will you keep your cool in any other situation? Also, the moron shooting his mouth off needed to shut the fuck up. Yes, you got it on tape. Be cool about it. Don't antagonize the asshole who might have just flushed his career down the toilet, was just in a physical altercation, and, oh yeah, he's armed. Plus, he could take your phone/camera away in the name of "homeland security" or some bullshit like that. P.S. WTF is with Denny's? Why is that the hang out for trash after the bars close? Posted by TPRJones on Mar. 29 2012,12:46
Listening carefully to the audio throughout the clip, it does sound like they were possibly our volunteers. The eye in the sky was giving directions to someone on the ground as to where they were at and warning them what they were up to. They were digging it up by hand, not burying it.It's not 100% certain, though. Phrases like "your guys" could go either way. But the "we think" phrasing makes it likely that even if these were "our guys" they were independently operating volunteers and weren't working close enough to be under some sort of orders, or we'd have been more certain as to what they were doing. And would probably then tell them to stop being so stupid. Posted by GORDON on Mar. 29 2012,13:17

(Paul @ Nov. 19 2013,12:05) QUOTE < Champion Bohemian Kick boxer meets U.S. Marine > That's cute. Typically, in my experience Marines dont do too well in "Pro-fighter vs. Marine" matches. The Marine's advantage comes from the fact he is mentally ready to inflict fatal violence upon someone without hesitation... the pretend-fights become a weak spot in our training. I remember once when I was still active duty, and my dad and I had a little spar on the beach one night. He is soooo proud of the picture his wife got of him flipping me into the surf.... I didn't know how to fight him without doing damage. I would start a kick to smash his knee... err, no, don't do that. *flip* I would get up and start a move to hyper extend his elbow.... errr, no, don't do that. *flip* Etc etc. Good times. And he's older now and I am taking him to the Grand Canyon in 2 years. I'll be bringing that picture he loves to remind him right before my coup de grâce.... Posted by GORDON on Nov. 20 2013,19:06

QUOTE Hell, I thought those were the smart ones. Generally no. If you are getting out, you have to get way over off the road to avoid getting squished. And in this sort of scenario the weather will not be something you want to be standing around outside in. Better on the whole to stay in your car until emergency folks arrive on the scene or someone blocks off the flow of traffic. Exceptions for car fires or someone in another car clearly in need of your help, of course. But then if you can get into their car to help them, don't just stand around beside it leaning in. You are squishy. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 11 2013,08:23

Well, she works in media, she used to work for Inside Edition, etc. So she's big into who she knows, how she knows them, and things like that. I think she misses New York and being more involved with famous people. They moved here (Raleigh) to raise the kids. She was very heavy-handed in influencing her kids' friendships (at preschool!), and is just generally less fun to hang out with than Penn.I'm not saying she's a total bitch or anything. She's done nice things for people (including flying up to a hospital in another state when a mutual friends' young child was having complicated surgery), and is generally pleasant, etc... just not my type of person. Posted by Leisher on Dec. 19 2013,07:12
It's funny you say that because one of my criticisms of the video was going to be how their number of hits is falsely inflated by her connections, and not based on actual talent or interest. The line about their son's video going "viral" was what sparked that thought.I'm sure she does miss her New York life. Probably misses feeling important in an adult world. That's natural. However, having a family is about sacrifice. I still bet she fucks like a champ. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 19 2013,07:45

QUOTE He began filming when he spotted the women, who had already collapsed his chairs and placed them in his beach cart and were beginning work on the canopy.
He said that after one of the women told him she as going to bury his phone in the grass (of which there was little on the beach), she lunged for his phone and it stopped recording. Which is unfortunate for us, because that's when things got even more ridiculous, Rich said. 'I continued to back up as we went around the canopy frame. In the most bizarre moment she gnashed her teeth, lunging at me with an open palm and said, "I'll grab your d**k!" I appreciated the offer but didn't feel the chemistry was there,' Rich told Gawker. The two women eventually scurried off saying they needed to call 'Pat.' An incredulous Rich sent the video, which he felt needed no explanation, to his wife, who was immediately concerned for his safety, considering it ended as one of the women advanced on him. She called the police and drove to the beach with Rich's sister and niece. Rich didn't file a police report, but says he's definitely never going to leave his belongings unattended, 'even in Mayberry.' Soylent Green.
Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 13 2014,20:38
The Post-Labor economy is almost impossible to predict. It's going to get really bad. Not as bad as 1939 because there will still be plenty of stuff to be had, it's just the primary means of stuff distribution that will be broken. I expect massive deflation and panicked economists. Fortunately the rich guys that own the means of production need consumers to have income to buy their stuff, and once they start to feel the economy collapsing under them then the politicians will get off their asses and figure something out.But the days of trading time for dollars being the main way people get money are coming to an end. And soon. Probably within 20 years. Posted by GORDON on Aug. 13 2014,21:04
I can see 20, I was guessing 50.
Posted by Vince on Aug. 14 2014,03:30
I think it'll be closer to 20 years than 50. Before we hit the tipping point on it, anyway. You're probably not going to hit the 100% mark. Once you get to 30 or 40 % of the labor force being unemployed, there's going to be something happen. Don't know what, but something will happen.
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 14 2014,04:54
I'm leaning towards 50, before 20.For instance, % of cars that are self-driving in 2030. Who wants to make a bet for that? I'm guessing it's small. Maybe 5%. I think we're already starting to see some of the issues. If you look at social security disability payments, they have been skyrocketing in the past decade due to people who are "functionally" disabled. They are not actually disabled, but basically cannot find jobs in today's economy, already. Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 14 2014,07:35
The 20 years is my guess for about when there will be more robots doing the physical work than people. For the creative, administrative, and professional stuff 50 seems more likely. In between those milestones is when I expect things to get bad and then get better.

(TPRJones @ Aug. 14 2014,10:35) QUOTE The 20 years is my guess for about when there will be more robots doing the physical work than people. For the creative, administrative, and professional stuff 50 seems more likely. In between those milestones is when I expect things to get bad and then get better. See, my guess is exactly the opposite. Digging a ditch is hard for a machine. Depth, drainage, slope, shoring up walls, obstructions.... a hundred little decisions that humans don't even think about but still account for. A machine would pretty much require a human still babysitting and making decisions.... pretty much exactly what we have now with a human running a ditch digger. Most business programs I wrote and was exposed to are the same simple logic bullshit arranged in different ways. I think it would be much easier for AI to write a new program for the accounting department than to dig a ditch, maintain an HVAC system, or build a house. Shit... an AI would write the accounting program in 1 second, compile it for 5, and be showing it to the user who requested it before they took a sip of their coffee after entering the parameters asking, "Is this what you wanted?" and immediately providing edits and tweaks. I think the typical programmer is fucked. Posted by Vince on Aug. 14 2014,09:47
I think it'd be the opposite as well. In Gordo's example, you would have one AI replacing dozens, or hundreds of programmers. Each programmer costing... what? $60k-$120k depending on where they're at?You'd need one automated ditch digging system for each ditch digging team and could get a ditch dug in maybe 1/3 of the time if you're really lucky. I'm guessing 1/2 the time would be more realistic (union's not withstanding) And you'll still need a real person monitoring the operation. And the system for automated ditch digging would be WAY more expensive than the programming AI. And a bigger payoff on the back end for all the highly paid programmers you get to lay off. Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 14 2014,10:28
What programmer is going to program the machines to program? I mean... common sense people ![]() Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 14 2014,10:31

I'm not really a John Oliver fan. I think he has an air of superiority about him that goes beyond the character. He's more Bill Mahr than Jon Stewart. Anyway, this is him interviewing Stephen Hawking and it's entertaining. I'm sure it's scripted, as most interviews are, but it's still funny. Hawking looks genuinely annoyed by Oliver, and I'd like to think the one barb is his own humor. Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 08 2015,13:35

I remember hearing that people did a study, and the average time it took for people to pull out of a parking lot went up significantly if someone else was waiting for the spot.I'm the kind of guy who jogs across a crosswalk if I see there's a car that wants to turn when I'm walking. I think there's a lot of other people like me, who will try to pull their car out faster if a car is waiting, which means that there is a certain percentage of the population who wait EVEN LONGER if they see that someone else wants their spot. Here's a video of a guy just trying to buy a pack of cigarettes around an indecisive customer: < https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0dbqnBFetc > Posted by TPRJones on May 14 2015,06:48
She didn't slap him, she sprayed him. Right in the eyes at close range. What a cunt.I would bet most people pull out more slowly not because they are being jerks but because they are being extra careful since there's a car right in the way that they can't see around. The real test is the crosswalk. I'm the type to hurry quicker to get out of the way, but there are some slow-ass people that just don't give a shit. And here's where it will become potentially racist, but I've been paying attention to the crosswalks on the college campus and 100% of white, latinos, and asians will hussle a bit to cross quicker when a car is waiting while 100% of blacks will walk across at a snail's pace regardless. In the five years I was paying attention every workday I never saw a single exception to those statements. Posted by Paul on May 14 2015,07:08

Right now, it is a really big contributing factor. So I'm so glad you're not talking about me, except you are talking about me because you can't see a person's health from looking at them. The next time you see a fat person, you don't know whether that person has a medical condition that caused them to gain weight. You don't know if their mother just died. You don't know if they're depressed or suicidal or if they just lost 100 pounds. You don't know. Let me hammer this one home. You cannot tell a person's health, physical or otherwise from looking at them." Listen, I get it. If you're overweight because of a medical condition, this would sting. However, 3 in 4 men in this country are considered overweight. (Although, to be fair, the BMI is a joke.) 1/3rd of all Americans are obese. That's past overweight and into very unhealthy areas. They're not all suffering from medical conditions unless being lazy and eating Ho-Hos is a medical condition (and in some states, sadly, it is). Maybe Arbour is being a cunt about it, but as a society shouldn't we be encouraging people to not be overweight rather than telling them to be proud of the body they have? Obesity is the number one killer in this country and "we should be proud of the body we have", but guns kill a small fraction of people and they need to be outlawed?
