< Implies CNN left out important details of a story. >

What's really interesting about this is the story was about "Smartguns".

Was this really a shot at CNN or a way to keep the conversation going regarding smartguns?

Allow me to say before anyone else does that smartguns will eventually get hacked. It's inevitable.

Depending how the security is done, it could be anything from completely hopeless to "better than nothing."

Because there are no illegal weapons on the streets today?

Guns will be stolen from private residents, jailbroken, and then sold on the streets.

Smartguns will NOT stop gun violence.

You're assuming it's not a pain in the ass to root it.  I cannot overemphasize how much security is relegated to the back burner when it comes to making smart devices.  If someone made that a serious priority, I bet you could some up with something that a pro would have to crack.  No consumer will give a fuck, though.

I don't care how much of a pain in the ass it is, it'll get cracked. It's a pain in the ass to rob a casino, yet people try and sometimes even succeed.

If there's money to be made or money to secure with your illegal guns, then those guns will get hacked.

When you fail to rob a casino, there are negative consequences.  At the very least, trying to tamper with a smart gun should result in its self-deactivation.

You aren't going to have a 100% success rate.  On the flip side, let's say that fucking up the jailbreak process renders the weapons inert and permanently disabled anywhere from 25-50% of the time.  Better than nothing.

I can't wait to live in this world you're painting. Will I get my own teleporter pad or do I need to use a community one to get to work?

Security systems that are just this side of 100% effective are possible, they're just really really expensive and only last a couple of years before new tech makes them more crackable.  That cost is why there are no consumer devices with security just this side of 100% effective.

Doesn't mean it can't be done.  And it wouldn't be too hard to make it so that an illegally rooted gun will misfire and maim the user, so there's that added bit of "security" you couldn't get out of, like, a cell phone.
