Safiyyah has made poor life choices.Minimum wage isn't meant to be enough to support a family. Minimum wage jobs are those that are not valuable enough to pay enough to support a family. Forcing up the cost doesn't increase the value, it decreases the demand for that job to continue to exist. Posted by TheCatt on Sep. 16 2015,07:10
That woman gets a shit ton of assistance. What if she got the $15 minimum wage people are talking about? (Let's assume she keeps her job and 40hrs/wk) Her work income doubles. Rent is more affordable, no more Section 8? Food is more affordable, no more food stamps?

Briefly. Then the job disappears because it's not worth it to the employer to pay that much for it. Either they'll find a way to use half as many employees to get the same work done, or they'll find a way to automate whatever it is they were doing and fire the lot of 'em. If a job just isn't worth $15 to the employer, making a law that forces people to pay $15 for it will in the long run just make the job go away. Now maybe the job is worth $15 but due to a market imbalance (like too many workers chasing not enough jobs) the employer has been able to pay less for it. But that sort of imbalance usually doesn't persist for very long in a healthy economy. Odds are it's just not a very valuable job in the first place. |
