Not a chance.

Everybody wants to be there for "Hippie's First Reality Check." That would be a reality check on a grand scale.I bet they'd use nukes on Red America when things got bad. Posted by Vince on Dec. 16 2014,10:01
I have to wonder in which America the left leaning big government half of the GOP would end up? If in Red America, there wouldn't be much of a difference.

I tried to read, can't do it. Fapping indeed. THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!! Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,11:21
They forgot the part about when Red America hung all the Muslims and Jews because they don't love Jesus enough. Not to mention the thousands of dead homosexuals.Otherwise, nice piece. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,11:23
Goddamn, I want a third party.
Posted by Vince on Dec. 16 2014,11:26
I'm not sure where you get that. I've never seen any indication of any of that ever happening or anyone wanting that to happen other than a few wackadoodles that not one cares about. While on the left, people are actually seriously talking about jail time for climate change deniers. And if you look at who's leading the anti-Jew rants, they tend to lean left much more so that right. As long as Red America sticks to the Constitution, they'd be alright. Oh, and repeal the 17th Amendment. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,11:33
QUOTE While on the left, people are actually seriously talking about jail time for climate change deniers. Show me the congressman sponsoring that bill. I'd also like to note it's illegal to sell booze on Sundays where I live (except outside a a bar) because that's God's day. That's an actual law on the books. < Here are others still around >. We apparently can't sell cars on Sunday, either, for some reason. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,11:37
It's not something anyone's been trying to make legal, but there are still plenty of people in the so-called "red states" that would happily hang the Muslims and Jews and homosexuals. I meet some myself from time to time, and I hear stories of others. Give those people half a chance and that's exactly what would happen.Just like no one is actually trying to make jail time for climate change contrarians, yet you know people that would if they could. Probably exactly as "rare". This piece is actually rather accurate in a lot of ways, but it acts like Red America would be some sort of utopia. It would not. It would be financially stable and have a great economy, but it would also have a lack of religious freedoms for anyone except Christians and little to no tolerance for anyone who doesn't want to conform to some very limited rules about sex and gender. No gays allowed. And certainly no transgender, that's right out. Entertainment media could show all the blood and gore they want any time, but there damn well better not be any hint of sex outside of marriage. I give it no more than a couple of years before Red America would shut off internet access to the rest of the world due to too much indecency. Red America would still have a porn industry, but it would be highly illegal and very black market. Posted by Vince on Dec. 16 2014,11:44
The difference there is that leading left wing thinkers that are published are some of the ones calling for jail time of climate deniers. I haven't seen those articles from people on the right being published.Hell, look at some of the insane policies they have on leftist college campus. Don't get me wrong, I know those people are out there on the right. But I don't see them getting their way in a Red nation. I DO see their counterparts getting their way in a Blue nation. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,11:46
Just out of curiosity, don't you live in Blue Ohio? How much time have you spent in Red America? For the record I don't accuse Red America of racism. There's still some, sure, but it's not endemic. But I don't think Red America is yet cured of other forms of prejudice. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,11:52
QUOTE ... little to no tolerance for anyone who doesn't want to conform to some very limited rules about sex and gender... Don't forget what chemicals you can and can't take, and how, when, and why you should consume them. Except for booze, nicotine, and caffeine because ... well, bribes. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,12:06
First of all, no one hates as hard as a leftie. That should be obvious.Secondly, since the article didn't mention religious intolerance, my brain didn't go there. Since it directly said they took the constitution as-is, well, that pretty much should be the last word. I live in blue Ohio, but I don't even know what that means. I am in the opposite corner from the 3 big blue Ohio cities. The state generally ignores northwest Ohio because of that, so most issues, for me, are local ones. In my mind, the description of Red America sounded a lot like America II, but I didn't do a lot of reading between the lines in it. Posted by Leisher on Dec. 16 2014,12:28
QUOTE Entertainment media could show all the blood and gore they want any time, but there damn well better not be any hint of sex outside of marriage. I give it no more than a couple of years before Red America would shut off internet access to the rest of the world due to too much indecency. Red America would still have a porn industry, but it would be highly illegal and very black market. I think you're leaning on stereotype myths. I'm 95% sure we've linked articles that showed research on sexual habits of left and right wingers, and the right wingers were the sexually active and adventurous ones. Yes, the religious nut jobs would want to ban porn, but the majority of "Red America" would want their porn and tell them to stick a sock in it. Just because blue and red break up doesn't mean everyone there agrees on all issues. Of those two countries in the story, I'd prefer to live in Red America, but I'm not religious and I love naked women. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,12:32
QUOTE Since it directly said they took the constitution as-is, well, that pretty much should be the last word. The Constitution has some revamping that could be done. I'm looking at you, Fourth Amendment. QUOTE It featured 216 new affirmative rights, including “the right to a living wage,” “the right to abortion upon demand at government expense,” and “the right to define one’s own life experience in terms of race and gender.” At least one of those is less vague than "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." I wish I could reword that one as, "The right to abort the government upon demand." QUOTE Red America reaffirmed the United States Constitution. Then the Congress began a review of all existing laws, statutes and regulations, repealing thousands of them. It also limited social spending dramatically, making known the expectation that able-bodied adults would support themselves and their families. The resulting non-military federal government in Red America was about one quarter the size of Blue America’s. Bull the fuck shit. The fantasy is that the Reds are interested in being less litigious and pork-happy than the Blues. Fucking please. QUOTE Forced to meet America’s defense needs alone, Red America slashed non-military spending and instituted two years of mandatory military service for every citizen as the only way to meet the need for manpower. And fuck the draft. QUOTE By casting off useless regulations and cutting taxes (Blue America’s “Fair Share Act” increased the top income tax rate to 74.5% on earnings over $250,000), Red America unleashed a whirlwind of economic activity. Red America, already prosperous, grew even richer. Yet again, I've seen no indication that the Reds are going to run legally lean. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,12:36
QUOTE I think you're leaning on stereotype myths. I'm leaning on the experience of knowing lots of people that you think are myths. What keeps these people in check is all the other people around them that are the same people that would probably leave for Blue America. Remove that moderating influence and I really do think these things would be roughly as likely to come to pass in Red America as the things described in the article coming to pass in Blue America. Me, I'd be heading for Canada in this scenario. Neither Red nor Blue America would be any place I would want to be. QUOTE First of all, no one hates as hard as a leftie. I disagree. No one hates as publically as a leftie, that I would agree with. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,12:38
QUOTE Me, I'd be heading for Canada in this scenario. Neither Red nor Blue America would be any place I would want to be. I'd smuggle contraband back and forth across borders. Nothing's good for biz like restrictive supply and high demand. Posted by Vince on Dec. 16 2014,12:53

There's still some, sure, but it's not endemic. But I don't think Red America is yet cured of other forms of prejudice. I live in Tennessee and grew up in KY. My African American friend that was my best man at my last wedding said his most racist encounter actually occurred when he was growing up in Buffalo NY. He was riding his bike to go visit a friend from school who lived in an upper middle class home and neighborhood. A cop stopped him and told him he was in the wrong neighborhood. Yankees don't want to stop blacks from sitting at the lunch counter. As long as it's a lunch counter in someone else's neighborhood. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,12:59
Oh, and don't forget that Red America's first act would most likely be to upgrade the Patriot Act into a full blown constitutional amendment.

At least Red America's TSA won't give a crap about pocket knives or water bottles. But be sure to have the proper papers and don't sass them or you might end up in Gitmo.

Again, it depends on which side gets the RINOs. I think the tea party guys are the only ones that really are coming out against the wiretapping now. While the left was really concerned about it while Bush was in office, it was the Democrats that made the law permanent. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,14:33
(TPRJones @ Dec. 16 2014,15:59) QUOTE Oh, and don't forget that Red America's first act would most likely be to upgrade the Patriot Act into a full blown constitutional amendment. Eh, you don't have to worry about it... you know that if the USA splits up, Texas is going to go back to being their own country. They probably already have the plaques made up, "You are now entering the Free Republic of Texas" sitting in the basement of the state house, ready to go. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,14:35
Heh, not in the state house that's in Blue Austin. They keep the plaques in Lubbock. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,14:38
QUOTE While the left was really concerned about it while Bush was in office, it was the Democrats that made the law permanent. The next party has almost zero incentive to repeal any existing laws. They have every incentive to pile on top of and warp them. Splitting this country down party/political lines would end up the same as every sitcom episode that's ever had the premise of parceling out a house or apartment among roommates. I'm concerned the Blues would have a European-style failure economy while having society run by soccer mom committee. I'm equally concerned the Reds would have a monopolistic economy ruled by megacorps while society gets run by hybrid clones of Archie Bunker and Billy Graham. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,14:47
I've always been intrigued by the "mandatory military service" idea. Israel does it. I think it would help a lot of people who need to do so get their heads out of their asses. Having discipline forced upon them is often the only way most people learn any kind of self discipline. However, it is bullshit to get drafted and have to go into combat... so maybe make the draft all the administrative jobs the military needs, but make sure it is still strictly regimented. And leave the Marines a volunteer force. Posted by TPRJones on Dec. 16 2014,14:52
I don't know about mandatory. Some people will just never be suited to service no matter what you do, what do you do with them? Do they go to jail?I like the idea of service to earn the vote. That's not a bad way to go. As long as service can mean some other things for those people not suited to combat service in particular. No need to drag people into combat that are likely to get their unit killed. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,14:59
QUOTE Having discipline forced upon them is often the only way most people learn any kind of self discipline. Bah. Trying to force things on certain people leads to nothing but more rebellions. That includes military service. No mandatory time. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,15:50
Overruled. You ship out in 3 weeks.

(GORDON @ Dec. 16 2014,17:50) QUOTE Overruled. You ship out in 3 weeks. Then fuck that shit because I'm rebelling, bitches. Then I might go merc and sell my military service to your opposition just to piss you off. Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,18:41
The military is pretty good at getting you to toe the line by telling you frequently in training that you now fall under the UCMJ, and just doing what you're told is a lot easier than the consequences of not. Then there's the pain, if that fails... they don't REALLY want to throw you in the brig. They will, but you aren't worth anything locked up. Even so, we still have deserters from time to time. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,18:51
Perhaps you've heard of MCFU (Malcolm's Code of Fuck You). I do not take orders well unless I have some decent sway in the decision making process. Well, if the person giving the order is someone I think is a dumb-ass, at least.
Posted by GORDON on Dec. 16 2014,18:54
I saw a few guys in basic just decide they were done, and sit down. Off to the brig, then a dishonorable discharge that follows you forever.Or, you can clean the toilet and do your time. Again, it is one thing if you volunteered for it, I can see being a little more bitter if you were doing mandated service. But still. Posted by Malcolm on Dec. 16 2014,19:22
My ass ain't even showing up to basic.
