Money doesn't solve all problems. Shame that he died in this manner. Posted by Vince on Aug. 11 2014,17:12
I just hope it doesn't come out he was naked and spanking it like too many others that've gone out that way.

Mrs. Doubtfire 2 did him in. Couldn't bare the shame. Blame Hollywood.

Williams always seemed like a guy with some pretty serious emotional issues. Even when being interviewed he seemed to be playing the character of Robin Williams. And when he acted he always came across as this guy that was playing Robin Williams playing some other character. He was just never a good actor to me.

(Leisher @ Aug. 11 2014,20:01) QUOTE Money doesn't solve all problems. Shame that he died in this manner. Living like one of us schlubs for a week would have solved his problems. Little sympathy. A little sympathy because a mental illness... when your brain turns against you it is all but impossible to fight it... but still. Posted by GORDON on Aug. 11 2014,17:43
I met him 20 years ago in Morocco. Shook his hand. 20 years later: BAM. Suicide.Beware. Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 11 2014,19:03

too confusing, didn't read version:1. In general, no sympathy for sad rich people. 2. Mental illnesses are a tough nut to crack, though. Can't fight when your brain says don't fight. Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 12 2014,05:25
I didn't realize that money solved all problems.

Something about having the whole world and throwing it away.
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 12 2014,08:48
You really think it's all about money?
Posted by Malcolm on Aug. 12 2014,09:22
Robin had been a depressed alcoholic for a couple decades at least. Just left a rehab clinic in the north a couple weeks ago. I'm a bit surprised this didn't happen sooner. I can't say the dude had no intention of getting better, but he either couldn't or wouldn't.

Go do some research on lottery winners to see how money doesn't solve a poor man's problems. Money is not the key to a happy life. Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 12 2014,11:32
(Vince @ Aug. 11 2014,19:12) QUOTE I just hope it doesn't come out he was naked and spanking it like too many others that've gone out that way. If anyone should have gone out naked and spanking it it would be Robin Williams. Preferably while also wearing a clown nose. Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 12 2014,12:12
(Vince @ Aug. 12 2014,13:55) QUOTE Heh... now they're saying that he was having serious money troubles. Some it really may be all about the money. QUOTE “I’m selling the ranch up in Napa,” he said of his $35 million Villa Sorriso. “I just can’t afford it anymore.” I don't think that's quite "money problems" Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 12 2014,12:13
Does money provide a certain level of comfort? Certainly. Does it ensure happiness? No fucking way.
Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 12 2014,12:16
Money can't buy happiness. But if you have enough of it you can sure as hell rent it from time to time.

(TPRJones @ Aug. 12 2014,15:16) QUOTE Money can't buy happiness. But if you have enough of it you can sure as hell rent it from time to time. Explain that logic. I think this is very much an issue of perspective. "Grass is greener" if you will. I'm not implying that having money sucks, but it certainly isn't a magical cure all for everything, and brings with it new problems. Posted by Vince on Aug. 12 2014,12:56
I'm making light of the whole "money buying happiness" thing. I've seen poor people that are happy and rich people that are happy. And unhappy members of both groups. I think unhappy people with money just find a different set of things to be unhappy about. That being said, the TSA is NOT one of those things rich people are unhappy about because they charter private planes and having flown that way once in my life I can say that having money for flying doesn't suck. Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 12 2014,14:26
More seriously, money can't buy happiness but it does come with a reduction in serious problems. Being unable to feed your family or afford rent can be an overwhelming when you are poor. That's much more serious than having to sell off the secondary winter house on the ski slope. It sounds like the real problem here was depression. Depression is not the same as being unhappy. It's a whole other beast that often has it's roots in broken brain chemistry. He should have been on some medication for it, but I bet he didn't take any because it would probably also dampen that spark that made him such a brilliant comedian. Posted by thibodeaux on Aug. 12 2014,15:31
He always struck me as bi-polar. But we only got to see the manic side.

I am surprised this group doesn't understand that different life experiences can create people with different points of view, and that doesn't make the person stupid, or even necessarily wrong.People who fall into windfalls and have their lives destroyed are stupid, but that's half the population anyway, isn't it? Of course half the people will screw it up. Rob had the kind of money where he could do anything he needed to do to get better. He didn't. If he needed to take a powder from his life (meaning go away, not die) for a while (or forever), he could have. If he needed 24 hour monitoring, he could get it. He could have utilized the services of the best neurologists in the world. This is the third time I am going to say that I understand brain problems are the toughest to beat, because you can't fight yourself when yourself gives up..... but he still made a choice, and he threw away a life in which he would never want for anything. Don't ask me to feel bad for him. It's a shame he did it, I'd prefer he was alive, but goddam. He had it all. Posted by Cakedaddy on Aug. 12 2014,23:19
That is one of the more insane things you've typed in a while. My take on what you said was "He could afford to keep himself alive". But I don't see how anything you said equates to happiness. He had it all. How do you know? Posted by Vince on Aug. 13 2014,05:03
It's perfectly sane. That's the problem. Assigning sane and rational reasoning to an insane person (Williams).Recently I had a 2nd cousin kill herself. She left behind two kids. I had to stop trying to get my head around it. Suicide is one of the most selfish things a person can do (unless done while throwing yourself on a live grenade). But I've never felt so hopeless that I thought it would NEVER get better. I just couldn't relate to where she might be. If Robin Williams had been capable of that reasoning, then he wouldn't have been mentally ill. Posted by GORDON on Aug. 13 2014,06:51
His death pics are out there. I was tricked into clicking on one last night... gruesome. Wish I could unsee.
Posted by Vince on Aug. 13 2014,07:04
Apparently now people are complaining because they tuned into the news conference to get details of his death and were given details of his death.

Hey look at this "insane" thing he said once in something.![]() Posted by Vince on Aug. 13 2014,08:15
Just because he was at least partially right in the head at some point doesn't mean he was right in the head when he hung himself.

(GORDON @ Aug. 13 2014,09:51) QUOTE His death pics are out there. I was tricked into clicking on one last night... gruesome. Wish I could unsee. Couldn't find any with a quick google search. What's gruesome about a hanging? Heard his body was basically sitting, but leaning forward. Posted by GORDON on Aug. 13 2014,08:26
Going to make a gap in case someone doesn't want to read. Even describing it disturbs me.It was a closeup of his upper torso, neck stretched and a really deep belt indentation under his jaw. Stubbly face. Clearly him. Posted by Leisher on Aug. 13 2014,08:32
I think it's disturbing to you because you have a connection to him. You've seen his movies and enjoyed them. We've all watched videos where folks are maimed or murdered and it doesn't have the same impact because they're strangers. Odd that no google search I try comes up with anything. Who knows, maybe it was just a really good 'shop.

(Malcolm @ Aug. 13 2014,11:23) QUOTE Selfish? Making someone live a life they don't want works out great for everyone except the dude being forced. If you want to check out, you've got every right. You can argue someone should be allowed to do that, but it's selfish. QUOTE 1. chiefly concerned with one's own interest, advantage, etc, esp to the total exclusion of the interests of others
Posted by TheCatt on Aug. 13 2014,09:53
I'll accept that it's selfish, but only on the basis that 98% of people's decisions are selfish.
Posted by TPRJones on Aug. 13 2014,10:25
QUOTE If you want to check out, you've got every right. QUOTE She left behind two kids. These two things do not go together. I generally agree that people should have an absolute right to leave this life when they want to. To end it on their own terms. But having kids changes everything. Having kids is the most selfish thing you can do, and it requires that it be the last selfish thing you do. Once you have kids, your life is no longer your own to end. It belongs to them. At least until they are old enough to go live their own lives without you. Then you can have it back and end it. Until then no way. Posted by Vince on Aug. 13 2014,10:35
I agree with TPR. And even if your kids are grown, it's a shitty thing to do to them. It's a shitty thing to do to anyone that cares about you. The ones you leave behind will almost always wonder if they missed something or could have done something to have changed things.

QUOTE It's a shitty thing to do to anyone that cares about you. The ones you leave behind will almost always wonder if they missed something or could have done something to have changed things. Yeah, it's shitty. But it's still up to you. Buddy of mine killed himself. Had a kid. Was maybe 2. If there's an afterlife and I run into him, first thing I'm going to do is deck that motherfucker. I'll help him up after and buy some beers and shots, but he deserves that greeting. It's not something I can hold against him or anyone else in a permanent way, though. I justify that with, "No one asked my ass to be born, I don't have to ask anyone to die." |
