He's the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, which is a professional basketball team.

He is dating a young woman who is half-black and half-Mexican, and this is despite him being married.

< He also apparently doesn't like black people. >

And it seems like she can fuck whomever she wants as long as she doesn't promote it.

How does one own an NBA team, and chastise someone else for associating with black people?

Posted by Malcolm on Apr. 26 2014,09:38
This isn't just "any black person" ...

...apparently she made the major mistake, in Sterling’s eyes, of posing for a photo with Basketball Hall of Famer Magic Johnson, a photo she later uploaded to her Instagram account.

Holy fuck.  I don't even think Marge Schott would've given shit to someone if they posed for a photo with Hank Aaron.  Maybe there's bad blood between the Clippers and Lakers.  Really bad blood.

This story is everywhere, as you would imagine.

John Thompson once said, while head coach of Georgetown, "I will never give a scholarship to a white person."

Odd that he was able to continue coaching without punishment or scandal.

That doesn't get Sterling off the hook, but I wish the race conversation was more accessible and fair. It's the only way to cut through all the bullshit.

I imagine this guy's voice sounds like Ron Cadillac.

Pretty good statement there at the end.

Really?  In an industry that is based on rich white guys buying and selling young and healthy black men there's no room for racism?

A news conference by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on the Donald Sterling controversy is underway. Punishments for the Clippers owner include a lifetime ban and a $2.5-million fine. Silver also said he would urge NBA owners and the board of governors to force Sterling to sell the team.

"I am banning Mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers organization or the NBA," said Silver.

Sterling/Silver.

I love how these organizations worry about the standards of behavior for crap like this, but not for the players.  Isn't one of the players in trouble for choking his girlfriend unconscious?  I haven't heard word one about banning that guy for life, and he actually did physical harm to someone.

Well, you see, RACISM=HITLER!

So based on the actions of one Sterling, you're judging all other Sterlings? But isn't the same type of bigoted thinking that started this whole mess?

So, you think someone in the family should be allowed to own the team?

Honestly, I don't give a shit. I just thought it was an interesting bit of hypocrisy.

But since you asked...

In a perfect world, yeah she should be able to own the team. I believe they're in the process of getting divorced anyway, so why shouldn't she own it if she ends up with it in the divorce? Her actions are not his actions.

If you commit murder, should we also arrest your wife?

Plus, if he had died instead of making racist comments, wouldn't she control the team? (Yes.)

As a realist, you've got to take the team from his family. Why? It's simply good PR for the league. Remove a guy who was already a cancer before his racist remarks, and get him as far away from the league as possible. Better yet, replace him with a minority owner. It's a win-win for everyone involved.

Donald Sterling's lawyer Max Blecher did not return messages asking for comment on Shelly Sterling's actions. However, earlier in the day, Blecher said in an email to ESPN that his client had not signed off on the sale.

Bobby Samini, another attorney for Donald Sterling, told the Los Angeles Times, "There's been no sale. There can be no sale without Donald's signature."

Drama.

If Ballmer's tenure at MS is any indication, the Clippers are going to suck for a long, long time.

How long will it take to get a return on a $2B investment in that team?

Was going to comment, but don't think I care enough anymore.  NBA can burn to the ground.  Don't care.

Interesting that the day after that story breaks, she says a couple of racist white guys beat her up in NYC.  I thought her story seemed really weird.  Now I think I understand where it came from.

Revenue-wise, I hear the Clippers are worth about $700 billion.
If you are worth $20 billion, and really want a team, why not decrease your net worth a measly $1.3 billion so so you can have a cool new toy?

< Article about the guys attacking her. >

I call bullshit. Two nondescript white guys that a crowd tried to apprehend, but apparently couldn't? No witness statements? No police report? She went to a doctor because her face was "extremely red"?

Meanwhile, < Sterling went to an all black church. >

I get that it's a PR move, and good on the pastor for inviting him, however:

TMZ added that Sterling did sit through the entire two-hour service, surrounded by bodyguards, though at least one of the 30 people in attendance "left with his children as soon as Sterling walked in with his entourage."

Seems to me that the guy who left wasn't being very Christian.

I don't even care about any of this.

All I know is that if I say something unpopular, I might be forced to sell my house.  I am not sure how that is happening.

Posted by Leisher on Jun. 02 2014,07:05
There are a lot of people who are confused about why Sterling was forced to sell his team. Especially since he never dropped the N word.

Basically, it came down to PR for the NBA. In their constitution they have the right to remove an owner from a team if that owner does something that can damage the league, and thus, other teams. That's what happened here.

The NBA is a league of mostly black players, and a large portion of their fan base is black. They couldn't have an owner making the comments that Sterling did as it'd be bad for business.

Meanwhile, the NBA's "bad boy" owner, Mark Cuban, got into a smaller controversy when he < suggested that people shouldn't be punished for their opinions >. He stated that everyone has prejudices. He's right. Nobody wants to admit that though.

That completely depends on what's in your Home Owners Association Agreement as a rider to your house title.  In some cases this thing you posit could certainly happen.

Think of the NBA as a shitty HOA and it all makes sense.
