So... I'm doing the Yahoo pick em thing.I picked Brazil 4-0 over Croatia. The final score was 3-1, but Croatia's only goal was an own goal by Brazil. So I feel like I was right. Posted by Leisher on Jun. 12 2014,19:14

Americans dominate one hugely popular cosmopolitan team sport without our nationality stamped in it directly: basketball ... when enough of the players give a fuck.Hockey? Canada. Baseball? I'd go Dominican Republic or somewhere in Latin America. Soccer? Sure as fuck not us. Goes between Europe and South America, probably whoever bribes the refs better that year. It wasn't all over the place but I remember when they made it to the final 8 in 02 a few Italian newspapers and a Portuguese one since the US beat their "golden generation" had headlines that were basically "Well it was fun while it lasted." The top teams don't fear us yet, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, Italy, and Spain(despite this tournament) but they know that can't dick around either except for Brazil and Germany. The rest of the better teams feel like they SHOULD beat the US but it isn't a given anymore. In the UK and lesser euro countries its 50% have their heads in the sand and think since we went 50 years without caring they can kill us and 50% thinking its only a matter of time. I was listening to ESPN radio yesterday and some national soccer guy (not sure who it was). Said he compares the United Stated soccer team to be the NCAA football equivalent to West Virgina. Pretty good team that can come out and beat anybody given the right circumstances, but no real shot at the championship. Sounds about right to me, they can play with the big boys, but they are gonna lose in the end. Still makes watching it fun though..

That was brutal. I'm usually a fan of our right CB. Geoff Cameron. I even have a jersey of his.He is why we lost that game, just terrible defensive lapses on the clearance and the late header. Truly fucking brutal. Jones' shot was surreal though, one of the best long range shots of the tournament so far. I'd have been thrilled with 4 points a month ago, but maybe not today. We really don't have much work to do to get out of our group. I'm imagining a very dull game against Germany. Posted by Leisher on Jun. 22 2014,20:45
Yeah, Stranger and I were speculating the same thing about Germany. Will both teams come in with the brakes on or will one be gunning to eliminate the other?

Germany was in a very similar situation in the last game of group play in the 1982 World Cup. Maybe just maybe we can get some collusion again. < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Germany_1%E2%80%930_Austria > Posted by Troy on Jun. 24 2014,10:45

Really? I would have put money if I had known how. How did you bet on them?
Posted by Leisher on Jul. 09 2014,06:30
During this year's NCAA tournament, someone set me up with an account to a betting website. Apparently, this is how such things are done these days. You can't just go and sign up, someone has to create the account for you.I was given $1000 in credit, which is hilarious since my bets are always $5, and aside from parleys to keep the account open, I never gamble. I could look into it for you if you're interested. Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 09 2014,06:54
I'm somewhat interested. Are these foreign accounts? Can you actually cash out? Is the credit a match? That seems awfully generous.
Posted by Leisher on Jul. 09 2014,08:25
I believe they're foreign, yes. You do actually cash out. What do you mean by "a match"? If you gamble that $1000 and lose, you do have to pay it back... Basically, remember how back in the day people would call a bookie and place a bet? Well, you still have a bookie, but now you do all your gambling through the website. From what I understand the bookie pays a fee for each account they setup. Thus, expect to have your account cancelled if you go too long without betting. (That's why I've been gambling lately on the World Cup and parlays. Typically, I'll do one long shot parlay on baseball every two weeks.) Once your account is closed, it will be expected to be settled, but you do that with the bookie. Now here's where it's really smart. I have no direct contact with the bookie. I don't even know who he is, nor does he know who I am. My account was setup because someone he does know asked him to do so. That means that person is on the line if I don't pay. Criminally speaking, it's very smart. Although, the guy I use doesn't just hand out the accounts willy nilly because, again, they pay for each one they create. I have golf tonight and will see the guy who got me an account and I'll ask him to inquire about how a guy I know in NC would get an account. Posted by TheCatt on Jul. 09 2014,08:46
Ahh, OK. I think I'll hold off for now. ![]() How has your gambling been doing so far? Posted by Malcolm on Jul. 09 2014,09:11

(TheCatt @ Jul. 09 2014,11:46) QUOTE Ahh, OK. I think I'll hold off for now. ![]() How has your gambling been doing so far? I'll still ask as I'm curious. When the account was started, I was up $50 or so from the tournament. I dropped down to $10, and then hit the parlay which took me to $180. I think I'm at $178 right now despite heavy (for me) betting over this last weekend. I think I lost 2 $5 bets, but won 2. This $180 should last me a loooong time. I figure when I drop to $0 I'll close the account. I'm not as big a gambler as some of my friends. Not even in the same realm. They need to gamble on everything or place bets every day. They have to remind me to make a bet before my account gets closed. Oh, and I have one outstanding bet that I hope keeps my account open through the football season. I bet $5 that the Steelers will win the Super Bowl. It pays $125 if they do. Kind of a shitty payout considering the $180 I won on 4 baseball games for a $5 bet.
