We don't have a baseball thread, probably because it's boring. Still, sometimes interesting things do happen.

< Brett Lawrie gets pissed at strike calls and accidentally hits the ump when he throws his helmet. >

Baseball will make a big deal out of this and suspend Lawrie for several games, but watch the video, those pitches are WAY out of the strike zone. The last time I saw umpiring like that, Leslie Nielsen was behind the plate.

As for the drink throwing fan, I think stuff like that should be an arrest and automatic lifetime ban from the stadium.

Posted by WSGrundy on May 16 2012,19:15
Because the 2nd pitch was just the ump calling him out to be a dick and show him who was in charge I have no issue with the fan throwing the beer at the ump. Something that could actually harm him would be off limits but pouring a drink on him is fine with me seeing as how much the ump sucked.

Of course if it was allowed than it would get way out of hand so if they want to ban the fan for a bit I am fine with that but the ump should be fired/banned for a bit too. Or they can just be banned the same amount of time.

I, and apparently the vast majority of people voting on ESPN.com, would love to see a lifetime ban for A-Rod.

Pete Rose got a lifetime ban for betting on games he had nothing to do with, and betting on his own team to win.

You're telling me using illegal chemicals to give yourself a physical advantage isn't worse than that?

< MLBPA > looking kind of bad.
QUOTE
MLB Players Association executive director Michael Weiner blasted MLB commissioner Bud Selig on the Dan Patrick Show Tuesday morning, calling the 211-game suspension levied against Alex Rodriguez “unfair” and “inappropriate.” Weiner also noted that the Players Association will assess its position on drug-related suspensions, as current opinion among players is split: “There were a lot of players who were in favor of tougher penalties. There were a lot of players who weren’t.”

If the players want their game to be taken seriously, they should publicly ostracize everyone who proves to be a habitual user.  A-Rod's getting singled out because they've got suspicions he's been using perpetually since '01 or so.

Yeah, but unless you put a pitch clock to force pitchers to throw the ball and keep the batters from calling time out, nothing is going to speed the game considerably.  At least they'll just go the the vid instead of arguing for 5-10 minutes.

The essence of baseball is "that shit will be done when it's fucking done."  Still the only sport that won't let you end a game on a tie, unless the commish is being a douche at the All-Star game.  If there's an earthquake, they will pick up on the exact fucking pitch they left off at after the shaking's done.  The only real way to do it would be to edit out the dead time between pitches.  But you don't see them cutting out the between play action during NFL games, do you?

Here it is presented in a different way than the NHL rule book:

If you want to be the first to go from the neutral zone into the opposing team's end, you must have possession of the the puck before the crossover, period.  This prevents your teammates from sitting down on your opponent's crease waiting for a lucky pass 75% of the rink length.

They just got done slapping the wrist of the most high profile cheater since Bonds. He got a one year suspension.

Former pitcher Tom House, drafted in 1967 and active in MLB from 1971-1978, has admitted to using "steroids they wouldn't give to horses" during his playing career.  According to House, the use of performance-enhancing drugs was widespread at that time.  He estimates that "six or seven" pitchers on every team were at least experimental users of steroids or human growth hormone, and says that after losses, players would frequently joke that they'd been "out-milligrammed" rather than beaten.

If every Muslim government, including Iran, came out condemning ISIS and promising troops, equipment, and money to crush them, wouldn't that be a hell of a statement?

Why is it socially acceptable to bash all Christians, but not to criticize Muslims for sitting on their hands as "5-10% of them murder innocents"?

They all fucking hate each other.  The Nazis only picked fights with whites (remember the UK and US declared war on them and they reciprocated) when they were from an unfashionable race.  It's hard to recant or argue one's race, at least harder compared to your religion.  Additionally, ISIS can recruit new, ideal members by brainwashing them.  The Nazis had to steal children and encourage a big-ass birth rate, even going so far as to say the wives of SS officers were communal.

Schilling is saying that the religion of Islam is akin to Nazi Germany, and that the world's 1.6 billion Muslims are responsible for the actions of a tiny minority of extremists in the same way that Nazi-era Germans were complicit in Nazi crimes.

Several days later, Arenas reportedly brought four unloaded guns into the Washington locker room, along with a note instructing Crittenton to "PICK ONE" and carry out his threat.

Instead of picking one of Arenas' firearms, Crittenton allegedly responded by pulling out a loaded gun.

< Finding Ruth >, a 60-minute special on what Babe Ruth would be doing in the world of 2015 baseball.  The statistics of his career are unreal, and I say that every single time I look at them.  Period.  No human being should be that good at hitting a tiny spheroid with a stick.  His actual salary, projected modern stats, fantasy value, and sabermetric value would be off the fucking charts.  His contract was estimated at half a billion dollars.

Best part:
They tried to relay just how hard Babe was hitting the ball.  Today, there are home run derbies where the best of the best power hitters get fat pitches served up to them.  The record for the longest home run shot is 530-something feet, and that was by the juicer Sosa.  This is the live ball era, and someone cheating with PEDs, and modern nutrition and training did that.

There were no home run derbies back in the day.  At an exhibition once, Babe hit some balls that got measured by tape.  When he performed this feat, he had torn cartilage in his knee (as he did the vast majority of his career), he was ill, had another injury besides his knee, and it was pouring rain.  It was also the dead ball era, and Ruth probably had eaten and drunk a small banquet the night before.  He still hit a ball fucking 540-something feet using a 54-ounce bat.

Every sport has its greats: Gretzky, Pele, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, whoever.  None of their respective teams built a stadium and an empire around the man.  There's no "House that Gretzky built" or "Arena that Mike Built."  Jordon didn't take the Bulls from losing money every single season to financial prosperity.

I guess it's not gambling if the guys are on different teams and you're hiding behind the bullshit of the individual performance metric.  Vegas just needs to start taking bets on whether or not player X is going to hit a certain value in points some new, made-up sabermetric stat.  Then you can bet on arbitrary teams groups of players ... maybe to outperform someone else's groups or everyone else's.  But shit, that'd be gambling.

The fact is, for all the huffing and puffing done by NL fans and/or baseball purists and/or folks who simply fear change, watching baseball games with a designated hitter is the exact same experience as watching baseball games without a designated hitter. The only difference is you don’t have to watch the equivalent of your buddy James from accounting whiff helplessly at fastballs, and you don’t have to see the fifth man off the bench come up in a big spot in the ninth inning, and you get to see a real-life major league hitter play real-life Major League Baseball.

Are there no pinch hitters or bullpens in your world?  Shit, that's the strategy you were talking about before.  The difference is one encourages specialization and another doesn't.  I found football much more interesting when players went both ways, but the physical limitations finally kicked in.  Baseball is nowhere close to that intense.  Why not have designated runners for the slow tubs like Ortiz?  Why not have designated fielders for dudes who can't catch?

< GM calls players' bluff >.  Not a bright idea.
QUOTE
Ravech said manager Robin Ventura intervened and told his players to play Wednesday's game because it was their job, and because LaRoche would want them to do so. Several players took to Twitter to support LaRoche, including White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton and Bryce Harper, LaRoche's former teammate with the Nationals...

Apparently Chris Sale, their ace, went into the GM's office and chewed his ass out. Told him to stay the fuck out of the clubhouse.

Williams has said they're trying to get the team to focus. Well guess what? This has had the opposite effect. You think these players want to bust their ass for you now?

Ventura's a career Chicago White Sox guy, otherwise I get the feeling his team would've staged a walkout and followed through.

< Wow >.  MLBPA is getting involved.
QUOTE
Chicago White Sox players accused executive vice president Ken Williams of lying to them Friday, and have demanded a meeting with chairman Jerry Reinsdorf over the retirement of teammate Adam LaRoche.
...
“We got bald-faced lied to,’’ said White Sox ace Chris Sale, who had jerseys of LaRoche and the first baseman's 14-year-old son, Drake, hanging in his locker. “Kenny contradicted a few things he said.

"The wrong guy walked out of that room.’’
...
MLBPA executive director Tony Clark indicated earlier this week he may pursue a grievance on LaRoche's behalf.

I think Williams is fucked, and the funny part is he's not in a terribly wrong place.

I mean the kid was there as much as his dad. That's a fucking LOT of time for a non-team member to be around a team serving no function.

That being said, who didn't see removing him becoming an issue?

Williams like to point out that this is common practice everywhere in the business world, but a MLB clubhouse isn't the real world. That's his failure. These are grown children playing a game. Their job is only real because people pretend its real.

Thus, real world rules don't apply.

End of the day, Williams clearly doesn't understand his players, and being the GM, I think that makes him replaceable.

Then maybe his contract shouldn't have been structured to allow his son as much leeway as possible.  That thing wasn't inked yesterday.

Prior to signing with the White Sox, my first question to the club concerned my son’s ability to be a part of the team. After some due diligence on the club’s part, we reached an agreement. The 2015 season presented no problems as far as Drake was concerned. (My bat and our record are another story!)

With all of this in mind, we move toward the current situation which arose after White Sox VP Ken Williams recently advised me to significantly scale back the time that my son spent in the clubhouse. Later, I was told not to bring him to the ballpark at all. Obviously, I expressed my displeasure toward this decision to alter the agreement we had reached before I signed with the White Sox. Upon doing so, I had to make a decision. Do I choose my teammates and my career? Or do I choose my family? The decision was easy, but in no way was it a reflection of how I feel about my teammates, manager, general manager or the club’s owner Jerry Reinsdorf.
