Forum: General Stuff Topic: "Vaping." started by: GORDON Posted by GORDON on Mar. 22 2014,11:28
Been listening to the radio a lot lately while doing various projects. I have been hearing a lot of commercials for "vaping" lounges where one is welcome to go and partake of their electronic cigarettes. It looks like they are coining a new word, "vaping," which I guess is the act of inhaling the vapor from an e-cig.I dunno. For some reason the word "vaping" sounds really gay to me. Nowhere near as cool as "smoking." Is the word a regional thing, or have y'all heard of it? Posted by Vince on Mar. 22 2014,13:32
Never heard of it. Seems odd.

I think it's the accepted word.I think you're just projecting your gay desires on the world. Posted by GORDON on Mar. 22 2014,15:12
I listened closely to one of the "vaping lounge" commercials today and the place was saying their... hardware or whatever... was manufactured in Toledo, so I dunno. Wish I could remember the product name.

I've heard that word used for perhaps a decade and a half now. Technically speaking, e-ciggies are vaporization devices, not combustion.

What, people only post the captain obvious picture when I say something?

Bam, Oxford word of the year.< http://www.npr.org/blogs....he-year > Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 18 2014,10:59
I started vaping on 11/6. I accidentally quit a 25-year-long pack-a-day smoking habit. It's just better than regular cigarettes, so I don't need those anymore. It's become a huge thing. And it has the character of early ham radio, or early computer clubs. My main vape rig is currently a pretty basic Nautilus tank on a Manhattan copper mod; nothing too fancy. But my secondary is a dripper rig - a Tugboat - which is a very good example of the current state of this hobby. With a Tugboat what you get is a stainless steel shell inside which is a couple of screw mounts. You use pliers to make your own hand-made coils to attach to the posts and thread cotton batting through it. How many coils, how big, and how tight is completely up to you and determine the Ohms of your dripper, which will help you decide what sort of voltage you'll need to push through it with your mod (calling the battery parts of a vape rig a mod comes from the fact these were originally modified high-power flashlight bodies attached to the vaporizers). Sure you can buy pre-made rigs now. But the core of the hobby is VERY do-it-yourself and you'll want to know some basics about the relationship between resistances and voltages. It's kind of neat. Volcano? Too pricy. < Extreme Q >.

Oh, I should specify that my vaping and all the vast myriad of devices I've started to become familiar with are all about nicotine vaping. Atomizing liquids. Not solids. This things being linked don't look very portable. I'm talking about things more like < this >. Posted by Stranger on Nov. 18 2014,11:47
(Malcolm @ Nov. 18 2014,14:44) QUOTE Volcano? Too pricy. < Extreme Q >. That looks like a great machine too.. for that price and the amount of product you save from not smoking it, it practically pays for itself. I'd consider buying that, much better price. Posted by GORDON on Nov. 18 2014,12:08

QUOTE That looks like a great machine too.. for that price and the amount of product you save from not smoking it, it practically pays for itself. Cons: Vape maintenance is not trivial if you want to keep it in respectable shape. Also, more glass parts = more things that can break. Pros: Comes with the plastic whip tube. Comes with medical-grade plastic bag. Comes with various other add-ons that let it successfully masquerade as an aromatherapy device. Posted by TPRJones on Nov. 18 2014,19:17

Having seen it done in the wild a few times, I've decided that people look really dumb when they are vaping. A long draw from a plastic dick then a huge cloud of vapor gets exhaled. And when downwind I get to inhale it too.Still vaping, TPR? Auto-correct does not like the v-word. Posted by Vince on Jul. 05 2015,17:47
It seems rather hipster at this point

I've only seen rednecks doing it.... though, rednecks are 90% of the people around me.Just looks weird. Not cool at all. Burning thing in your mouth... that's cool. Vaping.... just weird. Posted by Malcolm on Jul. 05 2015,18:45
I've seen everyone doing it. The devices are a bit clunky right now. Give them a few generations to miniaturize.

(Malcolm @ Jul. 05 2015,21:45) QUOTE I've seen everyone doing it. The devices are a bit clunky right now. Give them a few generations to miniaturize. Will that even matter, though? Even if they were invisible you would still have a grown-ass man suddenly exhaling a cloud of whatever just because he needs his fix. I dunno. Just looks/feels totally different than seeing someone SMOKING. It's probably all in my head. Posted by Malcolm on Jul. 06 2015,09:28

(GORDON @ Jul. 06 2015,11:21) QUOTE I dunno. Just looks/feels totally different than seeing someone SMOKING. It's probably all in my head. I agree with you. It's like the difference between someone on a Vespa scooter and someone on a Harley. The guy with the real cigarette is really committed to his bad habit. He isn't going to puss out by going the "safe" route. Posted by Malcolm on Jul. 06 2015,10:21
QUOTE He isn't going to puss out by going the "safe" route. The dude with the vape is getting more of the chemical he wants while leaving the other useless, inefficient, toxic byproducts out. He also isn't being a dick leaving around ciggie butts. Posted by TPRJones on Jul. 06 2015,20:44
(GORDON @ Jul. 04 2015,19:46) QUOTE Still vaping, TPR? Nah. I've got the stuff and I will again someday, but even though I went a full month without real cigarettes I slipped back into that habit over time and stopped vaping. I'm back up to a pack a day when I'm off work. When I get ready to quit, at least now I know I have a good way to do it. QUOTE Having seen it done in the wild a few times, I've decided that people look really dumb when they are vaping. A long draw from a plastic dick then a huge butt of vapor gets exhaled. I keep forgetting about the < cloud-to-butt > extension I have installed. I remember where it's coming from when it works as intended (i.e. "we keep your data safe in our butt") but when checking the weather or subjects like this come up I get confused for a few minutes. I was actually googling the other day to try to figure out what "Partly Butty" weather was before I remembered. Posted by GORDON on Jul. 06 2015,20:47
Butt wha? Whats a butt?
Posted by Alhazad on Jul. 06 2015,21:38
He has a text filter that changes 'cloud' to 'butt' because cloud computing is a joke.
