In the near future my kid's cub scout pack is going to tour a local jail.  I hear they will be fingerprinted for their "safety" or whatever..... the idea that if they are ever abducted it might help them get found somehow.

This doesn't sit well with me, because... you know.  Paranoid anti-government/police state/privacy stuff.

Would you let your kids get finger printed?

They've actually done that since forever. I remember getting fingerprinted when I got a tour of the police station as a kid.

Those fingerprints actually do get used in databases to help identify you, but in all cases, it's never for good situations. Either you're being identified as having been abducted, having committed a crime, or they're IDing your body.

Actually, I guess clearing your name from the suspect list of a crime is the one "good" thing. But even that means you have been in or are in a bad situation.

Honestly, there's no reason not to do it. They could actually help provide some closure in case of a tragic event, help locate him if he got lost, and you can threaten him that the cops know who he is so he'd better be good.

P.S. The technology currently does not exist to steal his fingerprints from the police records and plant them at a crime scene. But when it does, my plan will begin...

Given the increasing levels of proprietorial misconduct in the past few decades, I'd say no.

Get your own fingerprinting kit and make a set to keep somewhere safe.  Then if you need them because he's been abducted or something you can then give them to the police.  But keep him out of "the system" as long as you can.
