So apparently there is some weather phenomenon going on in this region, some sort of polar vortex or something, and we are looking at the possibility of the coldest temps ever recorded in the Toledo area in the next 48 hours. In the last 7 days the Toledo area got more snow than all of last winter. It is currently -6F outside, with a windchill of -40F. Just came in from snowblowing.... had some 4 foot drifts down the driveway, and I wasn't even sure if the 4x4 would get through, in an emergency. So I got that shit cleared. Then I did the sidewalks all the way down to the bus stop, about 200 yards. I hate it when peeps call in a snowplow to clear their driveways and the plows pile up all the snow onto the sidewalk so kids have to walk in the street to get to the bus stop... so I cut a path through the piles. Did not see a single human out there, driving or clearing snow, for about 90 minutes. ANYWAY......... I was out there sweating, even though for the most part all I was doing was walking behind a self propelled snowblower, letting it do most of the work. LAYERS. It aint a big mystery. I was frozen on the outter layer but sweating into my tshirt. Tshirt, flannel shirt, jacket with hood, then winter coat. Ski mask with hood over it. 2 pairs of socks, pair of sweats, pair of jeans. Snug as hell in sub zero temps. Be smart and safe. Layers. Posted by Malcolm on Jan. 06 2014,11:56
Or as we call it where I'm from, "winter."

(Malcolm @ Jan. 06 2014,14:56) QUOTE Or as we call it where I'm from, "winter." Yeah. Honestly, this aint a big deal. Facebook is acrawl with OMG IT IS SO DANGEROUS OUT LEVEL 3 SNOW EMERGENCY blah blah blah. Yeah, the roads are bad and you should stay off til the plows get them cleared, but nobody who lives in the north should be concerned with exposure just because they stepped outside. Fuck, I was grilling a steak barefoot in the snow a few nights ago.... don't want to track snow in the house on my shoes, and it is too much trouble taking shoes on/off every time I step outside. People need to stop being such pussies. Posted by TheCatt on Jan. 06 2014,12:08
Our schools are delayed two hours tomorrow BECAUSE OF COLD.No ice, no sleet, no snow... COLD. As I understand it, low of 9 degrees tonight. "Wind chills below 0" Bah. Posted by Malcolm on Jan. 06 2014,12:27
Governor of Minnesota canceled school today.
Posted by GORDON on Jan. 07 2014,08:31
I guess shit is bad when even the plows can't stay on the road.![]() We are on day 2 of the level 3 snow emergency.... that means only "essential employees" are allowed on the roads. Everything is closed, school, businesses, everything. Apparently there is a layer of ice and compacted snow on every road, and the sub zero temps means salt doesn't work to clear them. Posted by TPRJones on Jan. 07 2014,08:41
Heh. That picture reminds me of the one time I've seen a sand truck in Texas trying to sand down the bridges. It was in the ditch just like that. It's finally below freezing for a few days down here, and it has the gall to be completely clear skies the whole time, dammit. (TPRJones @ Jan. 07 2014,11:41) QUOTE It's finally below freezing for a few days down here, and it has the gall to be completely clear skies the whole time, dammit. Srsly... may as well snow if it's gonna be this cold. Posted by GORDON on Jan. 07 2014,09:40
Clear skies = colder temps. Cloud cover is like a blanket that keeps the warmth from radiating out into space.

When I was in< Chicago back in 99 >, it snowed almost 2 feet in one day. QUOTE The storm produced 55 centimetres (22 in) of snow in Chicago and was rated by the National Weather Service as the second worst blizzard to hit Chicago in the 20th century, behind the Blizzard of 1967. Soon after the snow ended, record low temperatures occurred with values of -20 degrees Fahrenheit (-29 degrees Celsius) or lower in parts of Illinois and surrounding states on January 3 and 4, including a handful of daily minimum temperatures around -50 degrees F (-45 degrees C) on the 4th in the area of heaviest accumulation. It was pretty awesome/fun. Posted by GORDON on Feb. 05 2014,13:07
Another storm last night/today. I think this afternoon was the most snow I ever had to remove from my driveway in the last 8 years I have lived here. Places without drifts were 13 inches deep, drifts were up to 3 feet.

It hit 60 degrees here today.

East coast is about to get hammered again with ice and snow. I'm trying to fly home today from st Louis. We'll see how far I make it. So far my first two flights home have been canceled, and I'm on option #3. Which is the last possible option to get home today.

Up to 40 yesterday, expected to get to 45 today. I had the chance to get out to the garage and clear a path for the water runoff off the sides of the driveway, so today's expected rain and snow melt would not flood my garage... again. This happened about a month ago when we actually had one day above freezing and a good rain storm. Garage flooded and we had sub zero temps the next day and it is slicker than a skating rink in there.Welp, it is currently pouring rain, and 4 feet of snow all along the driveway is melting, and the runoff areas I cleared are completely flooded and my garage is getting a fresh couple inches of water. FUCK whoever built my garage at the end of a downward graded driveway with no water runoff plan. So fucking stupid. Posted by Vince on Feb. 20 2014,08:26

Somehow we missed most of the more severe weather that hit all around us this year. It was colder that usual, but not bad compared to the rest of the south.

Holy fuckasaurus Rex. Several layers of ice to scrape off the car today. I don't think my tires made contact with pavement the entire trip to work. Took almost as long to get the ice off as it did to commute.
Posted by GORDON on Feb. 21 2014,13:56
This was my back yard before the last big snowstorm. I took the pic because it was the day after we had the -10 temps and fog, and I wanted a pic of the ice crystals it made on everything. My house is the big one way out there. The footsteps are the local shithead kids cutting through my yard. The monster energy drink cans they drop in the yard are under the snow and I will pick them up in the Spring. We had twice as much snow dumped on us since that pic.

Got a couple more inches of snow last night, so I assume Toledo has broken the all-time record for most snowfall in a winter, ever.
Posted by GORDON on Mar. 10 2014,17:54
As I mentioned in another thread, temperatures suddenly went to March average, so we have had a massive melt today. I can actually see about 33% of my grass, now, it is only covered where the drifting happened. Snow pile across the street is down to about 10 feet high. I can actually see the top of my well head. And my garage is getting a fresh shot of melt water, yay.Oh, and 6 inches of snow has been forecast (forecasted?) for Wednesday. We broke the previous all-time Winter snowfall record and we're just gonna keep going. Posted by TheCatt on Mar. 10 2014,18:00

The guy across the street owns a front-end loader, and a 15 foot pile of snow (pre melting) in some random guy's front yard is unimpressive? I'm not talking about the walmart parking lot, here.
